The alert feat I think needs some love. It’s completely passive, and mitigates or fully negates a lot of what random dice rolls get players killed. You get a +5 bonus to initiative, meaning you have a much higher chance to respond first to threats. Taking away completely the chance to be surprised firmly solidifies your ability to respond to creatures. this also almost fully negates the reason most players want perception as a skill which frees up a skill choice. Not granting an attacking creature advantage against you for you not seeing them is also incredibly strong. The majority of ways creatures gain advantage against PCs boil down to utilizing some form of heavy obscurity. Because all of this is completely passive it boosts your defensive capabilities quite a lot. It indirectly boosts your offensive capabilities by allowing you to act faster, ensuring you consistently take your actions earlier and more often. It’s almost like a chance to have an additional turn.
@harrisonpayne50

I feel like weapons of warning are in direct competition with it though. If you're hard up for atunement slots, maybe the feat is better, but you essentially get the feat for an atunement slot which is really good and it works for your party within 30ft.
@binolombardi
@binolombardi 4 жыл бұрын
Harrison Payne The features that negate surprise overlap, but the other feature synergizes with the alert feat. A source of advantage in initiative that you already have a +5 bonus to from the feat further solidifies your chances to act first. The feature of alert that negates unseen attacker advantage is still very useful. It can even be used defensively for spells like fog cloud since most attackers would then get disadvantage on their attack rolls, since advantage and disadvantage normally given are no longer canceling each other out.
@marmato9332
@marmato9332 4 жыл бұрын
I dunno, I took it once because I was playing a blind Cleric in a short campaign. Honestly, it was fine, but that +5 to initiative could nothing against bad rolls anyways. Also the other benefits didn't really matter that much, but I think that's more because the DM didn't follow the rules for surprise and sight so strictly.
@binolombardi

Marmato Well, I would imagine a feat designed to boost player chars effectiveness based on rules the DM doesn’t use wouldn’t feel very useful.

Agreed. If you want to go "beast mode" Alert, might I recommend taking it for the UA Ranger? The revised Ranger (far superior to the vanilla version) has a tweaked "Natural Explorer" feature which states, in part, that: "You have advantage on initiative rolls." As well as: "On your first turn during combat, you have advantage on attack rolls against creatures that have not yet acted." Now, say you are going with a dex-based ranger (why would you not?), specifically a wood elf. You have +2 dex (elf), so you may well start with 18 dex out of the gate. That gives you +4 modifier to Initiative checks. At level 3, take the Gloom Stalker archetype. This gives you the ability to add your Wisdom modifier to Initiative checks (wood elves have +1 to Wisdom and, being a ranger, you should have at least a +1 bonus to that stat, we will say a +2). You get your first feat (if going pure ranger) at 4th level, and you choose Alert, giving +5 to your Initiative checks. This means that, conservatively, you will be rolling Initiative checks with +11 bonus *AND* Advantage. Further more, consider that second element of the revised Ranger's Natural Explorer feature, having advantage on attack rolls against creatures that have not yet acted. Combine this with another feature of the Gloom Stalker: "If you take the Attack action on [the first] turn [of a combat], you can make one additional weapon attack as part of that action. If that attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon's damage type." All this, at level 4.

Magic Initiate is probably my top feat, even though I'm not big on most spellcasters. It can help customize almost any character. Who doesn't want a familiar or a steed or the ability to put Hex on an enemy in a fight? Plus fun cantrips too? Most versatile feat in the game imo. I also like that Mobile makes it so rogues don't have to waste their bonus action on disengaging. (Maybe a few other classes too.) And RP wise, Tavern Brawler is great. Again, almost any melee oriented character can benefit from this chaos.

Magic Initiate is the best feat for any non-caster, and in a similar vein, Ritual Caster is the best feat for most non-wizard casters. You get a familiar, you get detect magic, and you get potential access to a dozen other Ritual spells (Leomunds Tiny Hut, Identify, Water Breathing, etc) all of which won't count against your spells known cap, and also won't require you to spend spell slots. Playing a Sorcerer, Paladin, etc, and being able to get an extra half dozen spells added onto your normally limited spells known list is awesome, and being able to do utility spells without wasting spell slots makes the feat feel amazing. Not to mention, again, having a familiar is absurdly useful and even just getting one makes the feat worth it.

Ritual Caster (or Magic Initiate) end up being the most fun for me. They give you a familiar and access to a few other really awesome spells of your choosing that can instantly make your character feel more memorable and stand out from others of the same class. Magic Initiate especially, in my opinion, is perhaps the one feat that can completely change the feel of your character. Other feats like Tough, Alert, Lucky, etc, are all great on paper and make your character more effective number wise, but giving your character a familiar and a few utility cantrips/spells is a night and day difference to how your character can act out of combat. You're no longer just another barbarian with an axe. You're a barbarian with an axe who has a tiny crab for a pet that he can talk to, and the ability to spontaneously light things on fire with his mind. That's a hell of a lot more memorable than "barbarian that has +2hp per level"

Then take the durable, dwarven fortitude, resilient con, and tough feats as a hill dwarf to absolutely maximize health. Pick up a periapt of wound closure and then you can just sit back and let enemy destroy themselves while you heal. Effective 50HP Regen between passive, dodging, and aura of vitality with resistance to ALL damage. Enemies take 1/4th of the damage they deal and eventually either give up or die

A close 2nd will have to be Infernal Constitution as it really helped my low con Rogue hit 10 con and not so much of a glass cannon and let's him stay in the fight longer/save healing spells for later Also having 3 resistances and advantage against being poisoned? Hell ya
@yooooo8600
@yooooo8600 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of DMs ban the Lucky feat because it’s way too overpowered. It also makes no sense from an RP standpoint. Players might take the Alert feat because their character has a high wisdom and is generally very aware, while a fighter might take crossbow expert because they’ve trained with the crossbow for years and years. There is no RP justification for Lucky and the feat itself needs balancing

I have played a hill dwarf Sun Soul Monk with the dwarven fortitude feat and it was a blast. I picked it up as the first ASI. I was the defacto tank of the group, with the largest HP pool but an AC of 15. I would charge recklessly at our main targets and use Stunning Strike + Dodge as a bonus action (Help + Dodge prior to lvl 5 and when low on Ki), which was perfect setup for our ranged rogue and warlock. In hindsight Kensei or Long Death would have been better, but the radiant damage helped since we had an undead centred campaign. One thing to keep in mind that the Rogue Cunning Action doesn't actually let you dodge as a bonus action.

I'm still fairly new to the game so here is the ones I like and why: - polearm master: it is not an unusual choice, but I really liked it for my dwarven mutagen blood hunter. Fighting with polearms works against the -5feet from being a dwarf. Till level 5 you have only one attack, so if you tend to roll bad it can get really frustrating. I got this at level 4 and I couldn't have been more happy. I first thought the d4 was too small damage, but thanks to the mutagen I got a +5 in str and I also got my blood maledict going. So the damage die was anyways not that big of a deal. At level 5 I got one extra attack and really felt powerful and the attack on reaction helped even dishing out more damage. This really helped me embrace the glass canon idea of being a strength bloodhunter. - inspiring leader: I took it as a Varian human bard and this constantly safed people from going to 0 in almost every fight. Last campaign our characters were going down all the time and there was always one character responsible to get people back up. Now it just takes so much longer to get us down. It is perfect for our barbarian because she gets even double the amount out of it and especially for my low con bard it helps him not getting smashed. Also we play with a home rule where when you get more than half your hit points of damage or get to 0 hp you get an injury. This feat also helped a lot with that. - fey touched: I didn't use this and don't know if it will be good, but I really like the idea of going to the feywild and coming back with this feat. I hope it will be in Tasha's.

My favorite feat is probably Sentinel if I don't have a ton of stuff to use my reactions on already and if we have a pretty healthy frontline. Being able to hold down a point as a monk or as a fighter that's not Cavalier opens up different flavors of fantasy fulfillment. Shield Master's also nice, the bonus to Dex saves can make or break a fight, plus even though it's a contest it's potentially a bonus action disengage against one enemy with that shove, plus knocking enemies over railings and off ledges, while situational, is really satisfying to do.

Crit build idea: 15th level Fighter, 5th Rouge. Use a Moonblade, if your DM lets you. If you get a better crit as one of the runes, all the better. Fighter levels are as Champion, boost that crit range. You are an elf or half-elf, so you could use the Moonblade. Now you take Elven Accuracy. You get Advantage on at least 1 attack per turn, with Cunning Action. Three-die advantage, you get a crit range of 18 (Or, 17, if you have a crit-boost moonblade with Finesse) to 20. You now have a 60% chance of crit, if I got all that math right. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.

He altered the groups tortle wizard subtly and the wizard mage handed one of the little mice. Using speak with animals the druid learn the mice are always watching for "her." At this time the group was beset numerous phase spiders. Yaddie-yaddie combat, the hill dwarf barbarian monk is tied up with one of the said spiders, and it bamphs itself along with him into the Ethereal-Herebetween. There he dwarf is basically stuck and fights off the sniper but then realizes that beyond the vale in the ethereal that here is a massive web strung cavern and nest of the phase spiders. Solo, he manages to sneak, fight, and most importantly dodge+heal for survival; until a means of escape was presented the following session. /tldr::: Level 6 Dwarf Barb Monk survives multiple encounters solo in Ethereal-Herebetween in a Phase Spider next by dodging!

For Elven Accuracy... It's MUCH more useful if your DM uses the optional Flanking Rules. If you're a caster, remember to use your familiar to gain advantage so that you can maximize your Elven Accuracy advantage. I recommend the Owl because it has Darkvision and the Flyby ability. If it flies out of reach of an enemy the enemy does not get an attack of opportunity. You can have your Owl flying in and out of their reach (especially effective if they fly up a little).

Wood Elf magic could probably make an Eldrich Knight into a pretty cool Ranger. As early as 6th level you can have 3 Druid cantrips, 2 Wizard cantrips(maybe Mold Earth and Shape Water), 3 Druid spells and 4 Wizard spells(of which you can take stuff like Featherfall and Snare for example). All while having Fighter hitdice, Second Wind, Archery fighting style, Extra Attack and two weapons that cannot be disarmed and can be called to you at any time. This sounds like a pretty cool Ranger-like character tbh.

I was playing a Dwarven Drunken Master Monk, and took Dwarven Fortitude as soon as I could. And indeed acquired Periapt of Wound Closure. And I played him a lot like Rocky Balboa or Mickey O'Neil (from Snatch). I'd let myself get pretty bloody. and then BAM! I'd come out of nowhere, and heal up to just about full, and come back from behind to get that "W".

5 Ways to annoy the DM without taking lucky 1: Get expertise in perception, take observant, take alert, get lots of languages. Always be aware of everything, read everyones lips, always know everything, never be surprised again, make all you DM's ambush attempts null. 2: Take sharp shooter so every time the Dm says they have 1/2 or 3/4 cover you get to say well I ignore that. Also no penalties for long distance so If you can see it you can shoot it. (also sharp shooter applies to any ranged weapon attack not just bows and crossbows) 3: Get expertise in deception and performance, have dope charisma, get disguise self (preferably a hat of disguise or mask of many faces), take actor feat, be the best liar, infiltrator, con artist ever and get anyway with everything. 4: Get proficiency in con saves (through class or resilient doesn't matter), have good con, take war caster, never lose concentration again 5: Be a barbarian, take tough, take great weapon master, abuse reckless attack and flanking, rack up damage and be and unstoppable monster.

Dwarven Fortitude Maximized Build? 3 levels in Chain Pact Warlock, Gift of the Ever Living Ones Invication, to maximize the healing, then you can choose either a Martial Class (maybe Battle Master for Riposte), for the higher Hit Die and hope your DM gives you the Periapt of Wound Closure, or you can choose an Artificer and Infuse It yourself at 10th level, for maximum healing. My level 10 build was: 4 levels of Celestial Warlock (Pact Of The Chain) and 6 Levels of Battle Master, for an average of like 140 hp of self heal per day, considering only One Short Rest (without the Periapt). Needless to say, he was a beast of a tank, unfortunately I only did a One Shot with him XD

I like the healer feat, healing your comrades wounds before a short rest can help them save some hit dice and you could roleplay it as you being a field medic back in the day or something Also I would like to see "eldritch adept" appear in Tasha's even tho some invocations _might_ be too powerful to just be able to get them for free without any kind of side effect, the ones with prerequisites require you to meet the prerequisite and be a warlock, but I think stuff like "you can cast disguise self at will" or devil's sight don't have them so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't make it into the book I would also like the "Artificer initiate" to be getting one artificer infusion instead of one artificer spell and just change Magic initiate's wording to include the artificer

My favourites are polearm master and sentinel for sure. I am a big fan of martial classes and reach weapons, and PAM makes an already strong weapon, such as glaive or halberd, even stronger, increasing the damage output and providing interesting options. Sentinel just adds utility to the damage of PAM, but I also like sentinel on its own on a tanky build, like a cavalier dwarf with a shield and defence fighting style. Although to get the most of sentinel you'd want reach weapon anyway, so I very much prefer them in conjunction, taking PAM first.

If you are making a human wizard, first level take Arcanist (+1 Int, doubles Arcana prof, Prestidigitaion, and Detect Magic, with the ability to cast it once without a slot) Almost all Wizard builds take one or both of these spells at the beginning, so this means you a free to pick any other cantrip and first level spell. The fact that you get 1 Detect magic with no spell slot is great, and it come with +1 Int. It's a great wizard feat, IF you take it a first level. These two spells are so useful that most wizards have one or both already at 4rth level, and so it looses it's attraction.

I had a duergar barbarian that went from 5 to 20. The dwarven resilience was so good that he was considered almost unkillable. The reason why I went battlerager is that they can do a bonus action attack without having to use action for Attack. The fact that you also get Con mod amount of Temp HP every turn makes you even more tanky. Key items were Periapt of Wound Closure and Adamantine Spiked Armor from start to around level 18 or 19. At level 20 the barb could heal 20 * 28(average roll) HP and gain 7 Temp HP every turn. When you start with 325 HP pool and halved damage from physical... When this is combined with potions of healing, you end up getting to a point where you just have so much healing that you can just go in without any care. You can out grind just about anything even if they deal physical damage. At higher levels when I was doing 3 damage to enemies every time I was hit, it got even better. 3 might sound like a small amount of damage, but when you need to be hit 30+ times, it starts to stack up. Greatest feats could be said to be wrestling a huge demon (duergar enlarge lol) off a cliff and when the party couldn't decide what to do and had been discussing should we try to fight an Avatar of Tiamat, I made the choice for us by saying "I rage and run in." Thankfully the others didn't just leave. :) The characters only redeeming factor was that he could take a hit as he was a complete asshole and half the time had disadvantage to everything due sunlight.

Most draining situation for the character was when we were against melee creatures and four casters. I tried to run in to beat the casters, but ended up being frightened and whatnot for over 10 rounds. I was around level 8 at this point and I managed to tank every spell slot from the four casters before going down, giving the rest of the group a chance to win the battle in the end as we weren't pummeled by AoE spells.

In my opinion, Dwarven Fortitude works best for a Dwarf Cleric (especially a Forge Cleric) that casts Spirit Guardians in the first round of combat, and then every round of combat after that takes the Dodge Action. On round 2 of combat, it can cast Spiritual Weapon with a Bonus Action to add even more damage on top of Spirit Guardians.

Want a good high level OP Dwarvish fortitude build? Go straight Zealot Barbarian! Why? -Relentless rage: Starting at 11th level, your rage can keep you fighting despite grievous wounds. If you drop to 0 hit points while you’re raging and don’t die outright, you can make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. If you succeed, you drop to 1 hit point instead. -Rage beyond Death: While you’re raging, having 0 hit points doesn’t knock you unconscious. You still must make death saving throws, and you suffer the normal effects of taking damage while at 0 hit points. However, if you would die due to failing death saving throws, you don’t die until your rage ends, and you die then only if you still have 0 hit points. Now imagine, you are raging- you failed your con save (maybe used it too many times). So you use Rage beyond death, doesn’t matter if you manage fail all your death saving throws, you only die when your rage ends and you still have 0 hp. So right before your rage ends just use your dodge action, get that d12 of healing, and continue on with your day

Also, unlike another favorite of mine, polearm master (which is loaded as well), it is a feat that any character can benefit greatly by. As far as lucky goes, I'm with ya. Thats the only feat that is banned at our table. Besides potentially slowing things down, mechanic/optimization-wise it's one of those "why wouldn't you take it?" kinda feats. It's a bit OP. Hill dwarf nature cleric, playing a somewhat passive playstyle. While being on the front lines of combat, most of my turns involved dodging, using the help action, casting spells, and tending to party members all while under sanctuary. Level 4 pick up Dwarven Fortitude, nothing really changes because while I am keeping party members alive, I am not a threat to the enemies in most cases so my DM doesn't have them focus on me, especially because of sanctuary. Come level 5, I have Spirit Guardians up, with sanctuary, and dodging when I get surrounded by enemies, all the while rolling HitDice to patch myself up. Later on I picked up Durable and with my 18 Con (i put my 15 in con) and anytime i used Dwarven Fortitude, I would at minimum heal 8, doubled to 16 when i picked up Periapt of Wound Closure. There were many fights that this didn't work (like a mage just casting dispel magic/counterspell on me) but I would just fall back to my old ways of help action and dodging when i got surrounded. Dodge to heal with DF, which I don’t think you have to roll for as Durable makes it an instant 14 points, which is then doubled to 28 due to the Periapt. Combine this with the 300+ hp of the character, resistance to everything but psychic and relentless rage, you are very unlikely to go down

The Genasi ones, since you are curious, give you a boost to CON or another stat (depends on exact Genasi), Detect Magic at will, and one more extra ability (120 ft Dark vision for Fire, 13+Dex AC for Earth, resistance to lightning+thunder for Wind, and resistance to cold for Water). You should go check them out, if you can find the document. I don't know that they are AL legal, but there you go.
