One thing to remember about the Adamantine Armour is that it prevents *all* critical hits. This may seem like a bit of a "Duh, that's in the description" bit of trivia, but it is useful to remember exactly what that means. Sure, you are "immune" to natural 20 critical hits, but there are other critical hits that we may forget about. Under the effects of a paralysis spell? No automatic critical hits on you, friend. Are you downed at 0 HP? Hitting you in melee only fails one death save now, not two. The Assassin Rogue got past your passive and hit you? Boo hoo, no crit for him. This armour has quite literally saved the Paladin's life more times than we can remember in my game. He paired it with Boots of Elvenkind to negate the stealth disadvantage too.

However, Headband of Superior Intellect is perfect for Eldritch Knights as in early levels it's kinda pointless trying to cast spells that have a spell attack roll or save DC as so many don't so you can have low int. Hey Ted, The reason there aren’t any items like the Gauntlets of Ogre Power that change your Dexterity or Charisma is that because those are more powerful stats compared to STR. There’s a lot of spells that require a DEX save and having a high DEX, such as a 19, will make it easier for the players to succeed. Compared to STR, it’s more of a dumb stat, unless you’re playing a martial class, such as fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, War Cleric, and Tempest Cleric. If not, it’s a waste. Also DEX effects Initiative so if there were items that gave the wearer a 19 DEX it would just result in more players going first. This also kind of goes with CHA too. CHA is a commonly used stat for saving throws, a higher CHA will make it easier for players to succeed. Also, skill checks that use CHA is MUCH more commonly used compared to an Athletics check. So having an item like the Gauntlets of Ogre Power is good that it only affects STR, because that stat only caters to a specific play style, that being the up close and personal melee combatant.

For me I feel like +1 shield and Bracer's of Archery would all fit somewhere in top 10. In an interesting note, the extra books haven't really added that many powerful uncommon items. My personal take on the stat item limitations is that Strength and Intelligence are't that good as Dexterity, Wisdom and Charisma are. The Amulet of Health sets Con to 19, but it is rare. Maybe have the rest of the stats at rare too? Edit: I'm a dummy
@Reyn_Roadstorm4 жыл бұрын

I'd much rather give a +1 shield than a Cloak of Protection. It gives them the choice of potentially +2 bonus to AC, much more significant change but you have to accept some downside of occupying one of their hands rather than an attunement slot. They have to decide "hmm, use my greatsword or +2 AC... hmm" Also once you give someone a cloak of protection and it takes up an attunement slot... they never want to give it up. Whereas giving someone slippers of spider climb and Ring of Jumping they may quite happily trade those two attunement slots for Winged Boots or if in very flat enclosed space they'll go back to their trusty Boots of Elvenkind.

My guess is there are items for Str and Int because those are the two most common dump stats in 5e. An item that buffs Cha would be insanely useful for three different spellcasting classes... if it weren't for the fact that they'll probably be at 19 by the time they got the item. There is an item for Con but it's Rare (as Tim Thissen already noted). So, really, the big question would be Dex and Wis. Well, Dex is such an overloaded stat as it is, that nobody wouldn't want such an item, as it would be insanely powerful. ("My initiative, AC, ranged attacks, and Dex save *all* jump up? Hell yes!") Probably best to just not have such an item. Which leaves only the question: why *isn't* there an item to boost Wis? I do not know.

If you play a warlock, warforged, or elf who can skirt some of the sleep requirements you can ignore needing downtime or cut the time requirements almost in half meaning you can crank out one of these items in about a week fairly easily. The item requires attunement by a "Spellcaster", not the spellcasting feature. The DMG defines a spellcaster as any creature that can cast atleast 1 spell without the help of a magical item. Whether that spell comes from a racial trait, feat, or class feature. So answer: Yes Warlocks can use. Context to why you don't really find many items raising other stats than Str or Int. Str only effect Attack Roll rating, Str based weapon damage bonus, carry weight, pull, push, and grapple. It also effect different skills but not really needed to look into that. Now Dex on the other hand, effects all ranges weapons, all finess weapons, your AC, Initiative, and Dexterity saving throws (Which appear a lot more than Str or Int based saves). If you then boosted your Dex to 30, you would get a +10 to your AC and Initiative, which stacks with light armour and shield, and any thrown finess or ranged weapon. And if you play a Monk or a Barbarian with Natural Defense, you can look to get a total of +20 from Wisdom and Dex (monk) or Con and Dex (Barbarian). Which would give them a base 30 AC which not even Tiamat or any creature in DnD even have. Now for Con. Every 2 con over 10 is a +1 hp. If we have 20 from the start (Like getting a 18 dice roll + 2 con from race like Dwarf), you get a +5 per level, which is 100 extra hp. Now with a Barbarian which has a 12 + con modifier at level 1, means they start out with 17 hp, at level 2 with the 7 + con modifier, they get 29 hp, then 41, 53, 65, 77, 89, 101, 113, 125, 137, 149, 161, 173, 185. 197, 209, 221, 233, and 245 at lvl 20. And if they get Tough feat, you look at 285 hp. So imagine if you could then boost it up to giving a +10 at 30 con. Which in one game (I was not the DM), got 2 Rings of Constitution, and 1 Necklace of Body (2x+4 + +2str +2con), basically waited on leveling to get the two rings and the necklace. And back then, the Barbarian also got 12 + con every level. So quick math 12 x 20 = 240 + 200 = 440 + Tough Feat 480 hp. They were meant for Squishy targets, like Wizards, but no one used them for that, instead gave them to classes that already had a high health pool, to increase how tanky they are. For Int, it makes classes that uses Int for their spell casting better; Like Artificer and Wizard. Other than that, it helps with Arcana checks for making scrolls, enchantments and similar down time activities. For Wisdom, that adds to Perception, a +10 would give you a 20 in base, which can then be increased by Alert +5 for a 25, it kind of would make most Stealth checks for mobs extremely hard. For Charisma, there is not much other than diplomacy, charming, crowd control effects, and spells that already is powerful as is, even more powerful. Also don't buff the Bard, they are H enough as is. And that is only the around active combat, or around combat. This doesn't go into how Dex checks of stealth, slight of hand, lockpicking and more would just make a lot of things to put it simply, too simple. How Wisdom would make the Medicine even better than it already is, how Survival would blow long travel and rationing of food, tracks and such way easier to manage. Not to forget how Charisma would make Deception, Intimidation, Performance, and Persuasion, would be used to rail road the campaigns more than they already do. A +10 to base skills without focus is quite powerful, so with focus adding in Proficiency, a level 20 would get a +16 in total. And that doesn't count in feats.

For bumping ASI magic items there is the amulet of health nut its a rare item. Dexterity and wisdom are considered the most important stats within dnd 5e given Dex improves Initative AC and stealth scores, while wisdom improves saving throws from charmed, frightened and other nasty effects, along with improbing perception and insight which are powerful skills to have. As far as Dex, if you had a 10 dex char and got an item that took you to 19, thats +4 in AC, Initiative, Dex save, acrobatics, slight of hand, and stealth, that is huuuuuuuge. Re: why we don't have Gauntlets of Ogre Power for Dex, Con, etc. The way I see it, Str and Int are the dump stats for most characters and most characters are likely going to spend their ASIs to bump their Dex, Con, Wis or Cha because that's their primary stat (and Cons just good). And if a character is supposed to be fast and smart, or strong and charismatic these items don't make the PC burn ASIs for their secondary stats

the reason they only do stat-set items for strength and intellect is because they are the dump stats and don't effect normal saves (reflex, fortitude, will). If a character whose weak save is reflex for example takes a dex-set item, it basically solves one of the major character-design checks in the game and allows someone to become op. Imagine a paladin with a free +4 to reflex saves; or a fighter with +4 to will saves: it would basically allow 2-good 1-bad save characters to not be weak to any save-or-suck spells, which is generally how the average DM deals with those classes already.

I actually really strongly agree with the top of your list, especially the wand of magic missiles. If someone is trying to build an illusion or enchantment spellcaster in a high-fantasy campaign, i usually find they struggle super hard in the early levels. Same if they are a magic caster in general but not an experienced player. I find a wand of magic missiles really helps set a floor for casters to be contributors in fights even when they aren't really good at spell selection yet, and they can start prepping/using slots for their utility spell more by falling back on the wand. For me it just has solved so many issues at low-level play.
@brycethorne54823 жыл бұрын
For gauntlets enhancing only strength or intelligence they’re the most easily bypassed IMO You can use Dex wherever you use strength for combat if you’re not heavily armored and intelligence is only truly important to wizard and artificer Wisdom and dex are important for everyone all the time con is utterly vital to everyone almost equally and charisma is such an extremely common caster stat Maybe it’s to lessen PCs fighting over items? It still does seem weird to me It does

I don't get why all the wands have so many charges. I have a DM that only gives us a few encounters per long rest, and he rarely keeps track of when the dawn is, so he usually just says that after a long rest, these things recharge. In games like that, you can spam any wand, and it barely matters what spells you have at low levels. This gets worse with higher-level wands, so suddenly, you can cast fireball forever. This is why I love the failed experiment wand. It has two charges at a time, so at low levels, you can use one really good spell for free or two if you are desperate and need a way out.

I know it's not an official source, but Mordenkainen's Tome of Marvelous Magic does have Gauntlets of Dexterity. It is a rare item which makes your Dexterity Score *18* .

It should have been noted that adamantine armor or weapons (as well as mithril) are not actually magical even though they are in the magic item section. Creatures like oozes can still damage it.
@chrishepworth87674 жыл бұрын
I had a vague thought that this might be the case, but couldn't recall where I might have read it. Do you have the citation?
@micahg1964 жыл бұрын
@@chrishepworth8767 Actually, upon further research, it appears that the adamantine armor the video mentions is actually a magic item. However, it is possible to have adamantine armor that does not have magical properties. The latter would be super hard metal that is very hard to damage. The former has the extra rider of no critical hits. I stand corrected.

Living gloves from ebberon last war has to be one pick for uncommon. Free prof (slight of hand, thieves tools, one kind of artisan tools or a musical instrument) and double it when making checks whenever you make an ability checks while using it? not gonna say no! The only downside is you can't unattune to it.

Ik this was a year ago but even then I don't think the Bag of Holding really deserves to be on a magic item tier list, mainly due to how popular and common it is within most campaigns. The only campaigns I've ever seen where the players don't at least get 1 Bag of Holding are usually those that have "no encumbrance" and "no gold weight".

I have adamantine armour on my character currently because I have terrible bad luck ( my tank gets crit... a lot) but we do have crit tables so sometimes they do get an extra action or lop off hands so it’s not quite as good ( and to anyone who asks yes me and my dm spoke about me avoiding the crit table and he decided on it being kept , still gives me a fear of criticals )

I think they gave they items that people tend to dump the power up items so they feel like a good find for your negative int barb or your negative str rogue. The thing I don't like about that though is it feels unfair to the barb and to a lesser extent wizard who specced stats that are generally less powerful/less called upon than dex or wis.

I would argue that the Sentinel Shield would not give a PC a bump to passive perception because you cannot hang on to it while sleeping as a result it is not always on. Maybe an elf or warforged could because they don't have to put it down throughout the day.

Well I'd argue nothing applies while you're sleeping, including Passive Perecption: From the PHB: "An unconscious creature is incapacitated, can't move or speak, and is *unaware of its surroundings* ."

I'm surprised bag of tricks didn't make it on here, you get 3 balls of fur a day that when thrown becomes an animal from a set list. On average these lists (there are 3 depending on the bag itself) creatures' CR is 0.58 and you can summon 3 of them. Compare that to a 3rd level conjure animals spell which can summon 4 0.5 cr creatures. However the bag of tricks is non-attunement, and the creatures last ALL DAY or until they hit 0 hp. So once you get the bag of tricks it is essentially a slightly weaker, permanent Conjure Animals for your character. Granted Conjure Animals you can command animals as a free action and the Bag of Tricks requires a bonus action. However you can't argue with what is essentially turning a concentration spell into a non concentration spell and have it last all day. Especially one as potent as Conjure Animals.

Never been a big fan of items like gauntlets of ogre power. It seems like giving these to the rogue just takes away the barbarian's or fighter's ability to be the strong man.
@sciverzero81974 жыл бұрын
that may be true, but at the same time there's nothing preventing a rogue from having natural 19 strength either. I see the item as being more of a gimmick to let the wizard do One Cool Thing One Time by hitting something physically, in stark contrast to their general theme of not-doing-that. Something one might give a Bladesinger for example.

Giving 19 in the God stat for free it's a Crazy error. We have 19 strenght and Int because those are the worse stats in 5e. Plus, we already have an item that sets Constitution to 19, and it's rare rather than common, and COn really matters only for HP besides rare other things, so an item that would set DEX to 19 would be at least rare, but propably very rare. At that point, if you are a Dex based character, or a Wis/ CHS caster, you would already have 20 by the time you achieve that level of Power, effectively make that item less usefull. Thus why i think wizard do not add those
