What a difficult question, because there are so many great artists and choreographers to choose from. For instance, Busby Berklee; Shirley Temple and Bojangles Robinson; Fred 'n Ginger (of course) but also Fred and Eleanor Powell, Fred and Rita Hayworth, and Fred and Cyd Charisse; Gene Kelley in "Singin' in the Rain;" "West Side Story"; "Any Tom Dick or Harry" from "Kiss me Kate" with Anne Miller, Bob Fossey, Tommy Rall, and Bobby Van; Leslie Caron; Dolores Gray; Vera Ellen; Nicholas Brothers of course, some would put them at or very close to the top; final scene from "Flash Dance" with Jennifer Beals; the "Laendler" with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer from the "The Sound of Music"; "The Wizard of Oz."

As someone who danced Ballet for over 10 years (unfortunately, not professionally) and a Ballet enthusiast, the dance sequence in “The Red Shoes” is arguably, one of the best dance sequences put to screen. And of course, Bob Fosse is iconic! Edit: I’m surprised not to see Vera Ellen on here. She was one of Hollywood’s finest, as well Cyd Charisse in the Silk Stockings. Maybe, in an extended list? ☺️

Three of my personal favorites are "Me Ol' Bamboo" from _Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,_ an athletic masterpiece; the final _paso doble_ from _Strictly Ballroom,_ a flashy, sexy, duet full of sass and style; and the _Tabacalera_ from Carlos Saura's flamenco version of _Carmen,_ which answers the question of whether "Mambo" has ever been equalled. The answer is yes, in a show of strength and endurance from the all-female cohort that puts the West Side Story dancers to shame. I wish more people were familiar with these dances. What about a video featuring great dances that aren't well known or generally remembered?

The obvious "Musicals", plus those hundreds of 30s, 40s black and white movies that included bands, singers, dancers, orchestras, the Channel could be put together easily- all that is on film that could be called "Musical". I always wondered why celebrities didn't try to get such a channel started. There's Western channels, Food Channels, Crime channel, Comedy channel... My invented channel could be a hit, watched by all ages. Ah, well.

-- You put in Fred Astaire dance and it's the "ceiling dance" from ?? of his dances with Ginger Rogers from their RKO films in the 1930s deserve to take its place. If you had to choose one of his 1950s/MGM dances, then the "Dancing in the Dark" number from _The Band Wagon_ deserves to be on this list (look it up readers!). Astaire in his later career started doing these "novelty" dances for the sake of variety (the ceiling dance, the one in the workout gym where he dances with the hat rack, which you show, briefly, etc.) -- these novelty dances show technical skill, but little of the artistry of his work in the '30s, and none of them represent his best work even in the '50s. -- The _White Nights_ number was, frankly, a diappointment, and I don't think deserves even an honorable mention: Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov were great dancers, but either they, or the choreographer, or the time they had to practice could make that dance work. Hines looks uncomfortable with the more balletic elements (like the various turns) and Baryshnikov misses "snap" on some of the more tap elements. Plus it's all poorly lit. -- The Nicholas Brothers should be higher on the list, and the Barn Raising dance from _Seven Brides for Seven Brothers_ should be here. -- What to cut? Well, look to the honorable mentions. Stars though they certainly were, Marilyn Monroe barely dances at all in the "Diamonds/Best Friend" number, because , at least not to professional (or even really good amateur) standards. In fact, I give great credit to the choreographer, director, dress designer, lighting designer, etc., for constantly distracting the audience from noticing that that the lead (Monroe) moves little and dances not at all. Same for the Elvis "Jailhouse Rock" number -- even the clip shows what the whole number is like: Elvis walking in rhythm while the dancers do any of the heavy lifting.

I agree with most of what you are saying. The Fred Astaire selection was disappointing and, in general, I find his props dancing boring. They could cut #10 from Grease and no dancing with Monroe or Elvis. Also agree with the Barn Dance and Nicholas Bros.

Oh yeah It's true! The choreo in t 12:53 hat is hilários. Also Seven Brides movie has that touch of Fun that gives that spectacular energy especially on the barn scene I also miss the musical scene in The movie "Carrossel". The Louise Ballet sequence First danced in The theatre choreographed by Agnes de Mille but cinegraphically staged so wonderfully for Carousel Film. Few people mention It.

You should do a best of formation dances and swimming from classic Hollywood movies. Also a separate list of ballets in movies, plus animated characters dancing.

Agree with all of these. So much wonderful song and dance numbers (watch all the That’s Entertainment for reference.) But you gotta add at least one from Spielberg’s West Side Story. Not only for the choreography, but the cinematography. It’s hard for me to pick just one from the movie: Gym dance? America? Cool? All were so great. Now I gotta go rewatch it!

No, no, no to Speilberg's West Side Story. The choreography was by Justin Peck, not Jerome Robbins. Have you not watched the original? "Cool" was a disaster in the reboot. Jerome Robbins won a special Oscar just for the dance in the movie. The lead characters may have been better in the reboot, but nobody can beat Rita Moreno and George Chakiris.
