Jennifer Connelly in Phenomena is tough to argue. That Suspiria Disc is so incredible! That picture on my OLED and that sound with my 7.3.4 setup was so much entertainment for me that I could care less about the dialog and story. It is such a treat with that Goblin sound track. An absolute top 10 disc for me. Synapse set a standard in restoration on that disc I can't think of a title other than My Fair Lady in quality.

It's a little bizarre that they're known as "giallo" films all over the world. Here in Italy when you describe a movie as a "giallo" it's usually a whodunnit, and the genre doesn't imply any violent content, only a mystery. Ten Little Indians is a a giallo. Some of Dario Argento's early movies can be described as gialli indeed, but if you ask an italian - let's say from Deep Red on - you'll probably get "thriller" or "horror".

My favorite three Argento films are Dracula 3-D, Phantom of the Opera, and The Card Player. Just kidding. It’s Suspiria, Inferno, and Deep Red.

Great list my man and i did wonder why he dubbed over english spekers! Good to know. Im 49 so i remember city of the living dead and zombies flesh eaters from the early 80's when i saw them on vhs. My dad ( bless him R.I.P ) would take me and my older sister to the video shop and me n my sis would rush to the horror section! Whatever cover had the scariest picture got rented! Lol Dad was always cool. We knew it wasnt real. 😂 Ive decided to dive into the classic Italian horror movies and recently bought many. Watched the new york ripper last night and wondered about the dubbing! Enjoyed it though. Half of it was classic soft core porn! Lol Bought some by Argento - Suspiria, Deep Red and Tenebrae. Glad them 3 rated high. I sense an obsession starting with these Italian classics! Might even get Suspiria on 4k if i love it. I bought Hellraiser on 4k and watched it last night. Classic film and i love Barkers writing. Still holds up and the transfer is great for the most part but the dark scenes have some of the thickest grain ive ever seen in a 4K movie! All the best Daz

Yeah Italian horror can be a lot of fun. But it took me a little time to get used to the dubbing. But once you know they're all done that way, it's an easier pill to swallow LOL. Once I discovered Argento, it deifnitely made me want to find other giallo films or discover other italian directors. I like Sergio Martino... he made some good giallo films too (All the Colors of the Dark, Your Vice is a Locked Door..., Torso, and my personal favorite of the bunch, The Case of the Scorpion's Tail). So if you haven't checked out some of those films, you might enjoy them. Of course, Argento's the best director of these by far for me, but there are some other great giallo films and directors. Also, there's a new boutique label starting up called Celluloid Dreams that is releasing another giallo classic on 4K in June... The Case of the Bloody Iris. I pre-ordered it myself, since I've come to really look forward to discovering new giallo films on 4K that I've never seen. Great list and always my friend, I really love that you explained what A Giallo film is and the dubbing of them at the beginning! I think my list would be very similar. Deep Red, Suspiria and Inferno would be my top 3 but not sure of an order lol.

Awesome John - thank you so much! Yeah there's just something a little extra special about a Dario Argento film (at least, when he was in his prime). He's had me looking at film/cinema -- camera angles, lighting, techniques etc. -- in a whole different light since discovering his work.

@@TheOriginalFuzz I a 100% agree there’s something unique and original about his films. Even if I don’t love all of his films, Like your number 1 film Phenomena, I watched that movie two days in a row when the 4k came out and I didn’t love the plot but I loved looking at that movie!

I'm a long time big Argento fan (and huge giallo fan in general), and have even been to/bought some stuff in his cool-ass horror themed store in Rome called Profondo Rosso (Deep Red in Italian), but I just watched his 2022 film Dark Glasses for the first time last night. It's a good movie and a bit of a return to his earlier gialli, and definitely dispels the idea that he can't make good films anymore. At any rate, Suspiria is in my top 5 horror films of all time. And Deep Red is just the quintessential giallo masterpiece. And then there's Tenebrae, which is another masterpiece, and one that features a change from Argento's earlier aesthetics. No horror collection is complete without some Argento films - the dude has just created an amazing body of work with multiple masterpieces in it.

That's awesome! I wish I'd discovered his work sooner. I agree that some of his films are absolutely must-own films for any horror collection. I may be a late bloomer, but Argento's work sure has made a huge impact on me in a fairly short amount of time. And I'm so glad we're seeing all his best films released on 4K. Yeah the dubbing definitely threw me off at first. But now it doesn't bother me as much anymore. Once I realized the Italian audio tracks were dubbed too, I felt a little more comfortable watching the English dubs LOL! Thanks for watching!

The genre "giallo" was begin some years befor argento's movies, it started with trhiller books (them were called "gialli" because of yellow cover, also today in italy we usually call trhiller books in this way). Then arrived giallo movies with Mario Bava and Argento. I think Argento changed his style after deep red. Suspiria isnt a giallo, is an horror. With Opera, his last great movie, he came back to giallo, but there again many horror elements.

I am a fan of giallo movies overall, but admittedly, my experience with them has been somewhat limited so far. I like Argento and some of the giallo films I've seen from Sergio Martino and a few other directors. But I still have a lot left to discover with the genre... lot of films I haven't seen yet. @@TheOriginalFuzz if you haven’t seen ‘The Fifth Cord’ and ‘What Have You Done to Solange?’ I highly recommend those two underrated gems. They’re in my Top 5 giallos of all time along with Tenebrae, Deep Red and Opera.

Um yeah I'm far from alone in this view. I've met quite a few other Argento fans who rank Phenomena at or near the top. Not every Argento fan is going to have your precise opinion... and it IS just that: An opinion, nothing more.
