When I first dove into Italian horror, I came from left field and binge watched Lucio Fulci movies first. I'm currently now binge watching Argento and holy smokes is this guy amazing. Argento blows Fulci away in terms imagery and use of color. Tenebre is my personal favorite, but your list is amazing. From 1970 to 1987, maybe to 1990, he doesn't have one bad movie. Great job. This is a great one, and one that could have been my own favorite Argento film depending on the day and my mood. It just builds and builds and builds and suddenly explodes and just keeps on building. It's really a cinematic feat and such a rich and complex film in many ways. So, well done!

Hey Daisuke, I found a real deep cut of Argento you may be interested in, unless you've seen it. He wrote and co-directed a western called The 5- Man Army from 1969. The original director, Don Taylor, quit the project and Argento finished it. I'm a big fan of spaghetti western and the Maestro was big part the genre for me. He co-wrote maybe the greatest western of all time in Once Upon a Time in West. Argento is a legend.

Hello from Italy, dear Daisuke! I hope you are doing great! This was another excellent video, I really enjoy listening to your film opinions. I'm also happy about the fact that you enjoy italian cinema and share your love for it with us, that makes me really proud. Keep up the good work and enjoy the rest of your day Francesco P.S.: Months ago I read somewhere a story about the relationship between Argento and Ennio Morricone. Dario Argento's father was already working in the film industry at the time, maybe as a producer but I am not entirely sure about it, and he knew Ennio Morricone. Now my memories about the story could be not 100% accurate, but it basically went like this: one day, they all were at the Argento's house I think and Dario said to Morricone that he had come up with a story that could become a film, but he wasn't sure about it because he was young and never directed a film before. He was quite doubtful about the all thing, so Morricone said to him: "You shoot the film and I'll write the music for it". And that's how "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" was born, or at least its music. Since Morricone has always been keen to experimenting with new stuff I'm quite sure this is how it actually went. If I find that book in which I read this I'll let you know the details (maybe you already know the whole story, but it was fun to tell you anyway)

@@DaisukeBeppu I'm Italian, in my mid 40s, and I grew up with Dario's movies. My ranking of the top 5 is pretty much like yours. But that's not the point. I appreciate the fact that you really took the time to embrace an aspect that most other film reviewers forget...Italian cinema (Giallo in this case) can't be separated from it's environment, which is Italian culture. Argento's movies, also, can't be appreciated from the logical point of view, or from the actors' performances. He's a visceral oniric child and and a control freak in the same persona. Suspiria and Deep Red are two faces of the same coin. And you showed to have understood his work under its belly, hence why you ranked some titles very differently from other reviewers... I'm not a super fan of Argento but I get what he had in mind, because he explained it so well in the past 30 years. But reviewers abroad often lack of the understanding that you showed. I checked also your review of Suspiria 2018... I'm telling you, you really understand Italian cinema more than you give yourself credit for. Thumbs up. When I was a teenager and discovered foreign horror, Dario Argento was THE stepping stone that brought me into that arena. Italian horror became something very special to me, and I still champion it. Italian horror is what I naturally gravitate to and Argento is certainly in the discussion (that goes on inside my head) of favorite film directors. I can't fault this list at all. As usual Mr. Beppu proves to be knowledgeable, informative and simply a joy to listen to. While my personal favorite is Tenebre, I have nothing but the utmost respect for anyone who's top ten unfolds as yours did.

Additionally to the ones in the top five I've seen The Cat O'Nine Tails, Inferno and The Stendhal Syndrome. I personally think that the first two I mentioned are rather decent but not up there with Argento's other films. The Stendhal Syndrome was the second Argento film I watched after Suspiria and I was disappointed with it, maybe I should rewatch it since you rank it rather high. I definitely want to watch The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, Sleepless and Four Flies on Grey Velvet soon. Also, the Macbeth opera looks fantastic. The synapse remaster was amazing some of my other favorites without going through his entire catalog are Deep Red ,Phenomena , THe bird with the crystal plumage, Tenebrae and Two Evil Eyes( as much as I love Argento I must admit , George Romero is my all time favorite.. his NOTLD is what first brought me to Criterion)

Really enjoyed this series. Some things I agreed with you on, others I didn't, but that's the fun of watching these types of things. It was fun to see where our affections for some of the later Argento overlapped (Dracula as a great guilty pleasure) and where it didn't (I liked The Card player but not Sleepless, you went the other way around). Yes, I was expecting to hate the film based on the reviews, but I think it is such a fun time and very entertaining for what it is. As for your list... I love it! @@DaisukeBeppu Inferno I think visually is just stunning. As for some of the music and the narrative I'm sort of in the middle on it. It would probably hover around the number 7 or 8 spot. Trauma I think is an awesome flick I'd put it at number 6 and as for the Stendhal Syndrome that'd probably fall at the number 11 spot. And on a side note I actually really love both Masters of Horror episodes he did. Jenifer terrified me and I had a blast with Pelts.

I will try to revisit with you about my top ten as I’m unsure if I’ve seen 10 movies by him (the 2 big classics of his I still need to see which are Grey Flies and Inferno). Suspiria 2. Deep Red 3. Opera 4. Inferno 5. Tenebre 6. Phenomena (The top six are my clear favorites, but the order might vary depending on my mood) 7. Four Flies on Grey Velvet 8. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 9. The Cat o' Nine Tails 10. Sleepless You know what. Inspired by your video I'm going to finally watch the rest of them. I have seen Stendhal Syndrome, The Third Mother, The Phantom of the Opera, and I tried to watch Giallo once. But now I'm going to at least watch Trauma and Two Evil Eyes and go from there. The most well thought out Argento list I've ever seen, well done. My list differs slightly but yet I can't disagree with any of your points. As a huge Argento fan I haven't seen all his movie s in full. I shut off Giallo around 40 mins in, I seen the Card Player when it first came out but can't recall anything about it for it was instantly forgetable and never seen Door into darkness, Phantom of the opera or Dracula 3D (but now I want to after your review) so I cant form an opinion on those at thiis time. The Masters of horror episodes were also a disappointment for me too :( love your top 10 Trauma is the most underrated Argento film, Phenomena is so off the wall crazy and a childhood favorite and what more can be said about Tenebre, Deep Red and Suspiria! They are absolute masterpieces. The Goblin scores make the movies complete and can't imagine them without them

I definitely have to get this on Blu Ray :) It's possible that I have sawn the Creepers version on TV when I was younger but not sure. For my list I especially like the top 9. After I find his work is of lesser quality but still enjoyable with some genious scenes.

I would have liked to know which audio tracks you prefer for each films. I find the tone in his films change so dramatically depending on whether one watches it in English or Italian. Some of his films become so campy when viewed in English, and the experience changes a lot (and in my opinion improves) when viewing them in Italian.

It is a very good question, and it is actually quite complicated when it comes to Argento works. In general, it is oftentimes the case that people (myself included) will want to watch a film in its "original" language, whatever that means. However, for Argento works, it is worth it to watch the films in Italian and also to watch them in English. This is because, for example, depending on what track you listen to, you will oftentimes have the actual recorded dialogue of the actors (such as Donald Pleasance and Jennifer Connelly in Phenomena/Creepers English tracks etc.). However, at the same time, the dubbing adds a kind of interesting effect to the overall mood of an Argento film, which could be a positive depending on one's mood. Also, especially for Italian films, dubbing and ADR was commonly employed, and so even in the "original" language, there still can appear a kind of "distancing" between what one hears (the dialogue) and what one sees (a person on screen moving his or her lips as though engaged in speaking). For example, see any Fellini film.

I think that many of his films used international casts, so in both dubs there will be characters that are voiced by the original actor. There is definitely some space with some actors not delivering the lines as well as others, such as in Suspiria with the first two female victims in the apartment. I think beyond the syncing though the delivery of the lines can really alter the tone (for example the dialogue in the ending of Suspiria, in English the voice is very spooky but can also be interpreted as slightly cheesy (which as you point out can be a good or bad thing). Also in some cases, such as with Deep Red and Phenomena (original Italian cuts), due to international cuts having less dialogue, the English dub reverts to Italian for the missing dialogue, which is very distracting. Inferno in English almost changes into a parody kind of horror film, I think that doesn't feel true to what Argento envisioned for the movie (in my opinion), but some people might really like the result anyway.

I'm very thankful for Argento as he sparked my interest for horror films again last year, before that horror was my least favorite genre, now I would say horror ranks somewhere in the middle of my "genre rankings". Personally: I didn't care for the new suspiria I feel if the film was trimmed down to 120 mins and the "climax" edited itd be a marvelous film But I think alot of the b and c plots are needless and GREATLY hamper the pacing of the film; especially considering they dont really go anywhere Id wager theyre likely the biproduct of the film initially going in a different direction and the director changing up midway through production (Eg: chloe grace moretz aint cheap and is wasted. I bet she was initially going to have a much larger role) Tldr: I think the movie is fine. Its one of the few films I think would have benefited from rigorous editing and chopping down

Hi I am Italian and could see his movies on TV (in original language 🙂) when I was a kid -which was in the 70s. I wonder how could my parents let me watch something so gruesome but of course I am happy I did because his movies are masterpiece of cinematography and dreary atmosphere. I did not see all his movies, only the major 5-6 movies. My fave is Suspiria. Btw I had no idea he was well known outside Italy too. Thanks for these reviews.

I also dig _Dario Argento's Dracula 3D_ as well as his interpretation of _The Phantom of the Opera_ . I've seen most of Argento's _oeuvre_ . I'm keen on seeing _Giallo_ despite its rotten reputation. _Hey_ ! It's _Argento_ , and therefore _must_ be seen! I am old enough to have seen Argento's "Golden Age classics" during their initial theatrical releases. His directorial debut, _Bird with the Crystal Plumage_ enjoyed both critical praise and a widespread audience. Hailed as "The Italian Hitchcock," Argento was at the peak of his popularity -- among "mainstream" filmgoers. Alas, only a few years later, the brilliance of his shining promise significantly dimmed. Hitchcock no longer had anyone to worry about. Argento's evolution (or, for some, devolution) from "Master of Suspense" to "Master of Horror" negatively impacted his appeal and, more profoundly, the trajectory of his career. Clean-cut "squares" who had flocked to his voguish thrillers shunned his gory chillers. Whereas _Bird_ had been showcased in ritzy, "upper-class" movie theatres, "grindhouses" and drive-ins became the dives for Argento flicks such as _Suspiria_ and _Inferno_ -- at least in my small corner of the universe. _Che palle_ ! I had the extremely good fortune to see Argento in person, at a film festival about 20 years ago. Quite a character! After the Q&A with an adoring audience, an appreciative Argento exclaimed, " _You_ ! You know everything about me! But, you don't know _this_ !" whereupon he unzipped his fly, dropped his trousers, and stood, beaming, before the hysterical crowd in his skivvies! _Beppu-san_ , I watched _Nonhosonno_ (or _Non ho sonno_ AKA _Sleepless_ ), recently issued on Blu-ray disc by Scorpion Releasing. In my previous post, I wrote that I've seen most of Argento's movies. I've missed almost all of his 21st century output ( _The Card Player_ , _Do You Like Hitchcock_ , _Giallo_ ) because they did not get theatrical releases in or near my zip code. Such was the case with _Sleepless_ . I found it an entertaining and worthwhile _giallo_ . I agree with Argento maven Troy Howarth that _Sleepless_ is derivative of Argento's "classic" thrillers from the 70s and 80s. Howarth's critique of _Sleepless_ in his _So Deadly, So Perverse Volume 2 1974-2013_ guidebook (published in 2015) is unequivocally scathing. A fan of _Sleepless_ , he is not. However, in his Blu-ray disc commentary (in tandem with Mondo Digital's Nathaniel Thompson), Howarth softens his earlier, harsh attitude, deciding that _Sleepless_ isn't so bad as he'd earlier dismissed it to be. Among the extras on the Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray disc is a brief interview with a, IMO, subdued Argento. He expresses mild satisfaction with _Sleepless_ . I got the impression that DA wants to stretch himself beyond the boundaries of the _giallo_ . Hence his detours towards "conventional" horror films such as _The Phantom of the Opera_ and _Dracula 3D*_ . Unfortunately for Argento, every time that he's tried to veer off in a different direction or take a different approach to a genre, his hardcore fans will have none of it. They restrictively -- constrictively -- insist that he confine himself to the type of movie that attracted them to him. Now 80, the old master is _still_ at it, working on . . . *another* _giallo, Black Glasses_ . "It will be my return to crime films," says Argento. I, for one, hope that it will be a successful return that satisfies and pleases Argentophiles but more importantly satisfies and pleases Maestro Argento. * In his interview on the Scorpion Releasing disc, set designer Antonello Geleng reports that he saw a _bored_ Dario Argento during the making of _Dracula 3D_ . The lethargic, time-consuming 3D process killed Argento's joy of filmmaking.

Dear Daisuke, greetings from Czech republic by an Italian fan of the Maestro Dario Argento! I wanna show you my list, but it's not about all the complete filmography, as after "The card player" I stopped believing he could make again good movies anymore (unfortunately, it looks like I was right). And, I repeat, I'm really a great fan of him! Then, I never saw the only non horror film he directed (you even didn't put in the list "The five days of Milan") and "The black cat" from "Two evil eyes". Some notes: I didn't have such great memories about "Opera", I will watch it again; then, sorry, but today I'm not in the mood to choose between "Deep red" and "Suspiria", I put both at number 1. Here's my list: 16. The Phantom of the opera (simply...terrible and hilarious) 15. The Stendhal Syndrome (really forgettable) 14. The card player (poor screenplay, poor direction, poor movie) 13. Do you like Hitchcock? (good idea, but NOT a good movie) 12. Sleepless (the best of the last 25 years, but it doesn't mean it's a such great movie. Acceptable) 11. Trauma (good screenplay, but I remember it above all to be the starting of the collaboration with the daughter, and it's not a compliment) 10. Opera (not a masterpiece, but the scene in the apartment is very good) 9. Door into darkness (during his golden age, good movies for the TV, with a real tension until the end) 8. 4 flies on grey velvet (I had to wait years to watch it, and in the meantime I found who was the killer because of a stupid TV program that I accidentallly saw in the ninenties. Great movie, with some memorable scenes, like the killing in the park) 7. The cat o'nine tails (great atmosphere, the mith Karl Malden, the killer who is everywhere...a gem) 6. Phenomena (Probably, his last masterpiece) 5. Inferno (I love it, maybe just because it's not perfect at all. I think there are the best killings in this movie, and there's an atmosphere of pure terror from the beginning to the end. Great, great, great) 4. Tenebrae (The first time I saw it, I was so scared! The soundtrack is one of best from Goblin, and the main idea of the screenplay is unforgettable (no spoiler...). A Masterpiece: one of those movies I need to watch again sometimes) 3. The bird with the crystal plumage (The beginning of an era, for many reasons it could be considered his best movie. But later he played my two number 1...) 1. Deep red 1. Suspiria (well, what can we say about these 2 movies? Not 2 masterpieces of horror cinema, but 2 masterpieces of Cinema). Daisuke, what about a series about Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci? And did you ever saw "The house with laughing windows" of Pupi Avati?

I saw Inferno on home video (CBS FOX label, as I recall) a few years before seeing Suspiria on VHS and much preferred it over the latter. What I didn't understand is that Suspiria's scope compositions suffered much more from TV pan & scan formatting than Inferno's 16×9 framing. After seeing them both in their proper dimensions I consider the two films inseparable and both belong at the top of Argento's CV.

Another film I’ve heard compared to Suspiria that I like quite a lot is Climax. Have you seen that film? What do you think of it if you have?

So yes I have seen Climax and the Suspiria "remake". Both I think are very interesting and intense works. And as much as I love the Argento film and I think the Argento film is one of my most favorite films, I really liked the "remake" and even now, when I watch it, I still find it fascinating and very mysterious.

xfritz5375 it’s an intense and heavily stylized work, and it is certainly not for everybody. Also of course I don’t recommend it to anyone that is a young child. But if you are OK with this kind of intense film, and of course if you are of age to be able to watch films like this, then yes I can recommend it.

Daisuke Beppu I just finished the film and wow. It was fantastic. I especially loved the music and use of color. Horror films are generally not very colorful, so it was interesting to see a horror film that used bright colors so effectively. I also love the music, and it may have been my favorite aspect of the film. I love music as much as I love film and music is an important part of my life, so any time I hear a score for a film that has such a unique sound like this, it’s hard for me not to love it. I can’t wait to watch more Dario Argento films, especially the ones scored by Goblin. I’m going to watch Two Evil Eyes, Opera, Phenomena, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, and Deep Red soon, definitely within the next couple weeks. I’ve seen some people criticize Climax for being very similar to Suspiria, but I didn’t really see that. I liked Climax, so the Suspiria comparisons were part of what made me interested in Suspiria in the first place, but the only real similarities between the two to me are that they’re both intense, colorful, and disturbing films that feature dancers as main characters. I loved them both for different reasons.

@@DaisukeBeppu Giallo as a sub genre has very defined tropes ..there has to be a sexualised murder mystery and a masked or gloved killer, preferably in a trenchcoat, usually a victim of psycho pathogical trauma, unreliable witnesses, the main protagonist will usually be a stranger in a strange land or someone accidentally drawn in to acting as sleuth, they are bound by the time they exist so a gay man will either be a red herring or criminals, there will be psychedelic elements , the settings will usually be overwhelming in some way either by the complexity of an interior or vast ...Suspiria and Inferno use Giallo elements but the use of the supernatural precludes them from being Giallo films...I have my own page dedicated to Psycho Biddies and after four years it's no longer possible to just write about the film's that are totemic as strictly speaking there are only a handful so of course I search for any example of films, characters in film theatre or literature that could fit the criteria but I am well aware that I am attempting to extending the boundaries of the genre but I do realise that by doing it all I am accomplishing is highlighting the before and after...I can call a female murderer who lives a solitary life, haunted by the past a psychobiddy but in pure terms they aren't as they weren't created at the dying end of the Studio system in Hollywood and they don't feature actresses who were once huge stars who were considered too old to be financially viable, until the studios noticed that audiences like seeing older women losing their shit on screen.... So I do understand to temptation to label films Giallo when they contain Giallo elements but aren't actually Giallo films.
