@Liutgard8 жыл бұрын
I got married in '83 (yes, I'm old) and I remember the decade a little too well. You forgot those drop-waisted calico farm wife dresses that were fancy wear for 4 or 5 years. Flats with stirrup pants. Early mullets and layered mall hair- remember Jessica Hahn> I had hair like her, until she hit the scene and I was so shocked by the whole mess that I went and had my hair cut. (It looked like Krystal from Dynasty.) Evening soaps were big, and there was a LOT of glitz. Bob Mackie's stuff was EVERYWHERE. I also remember iridescent makeup- I had a lipstick and nail polish pair that were a light magenta, until you turned, and then they were chartreuse. Pleated jeans were big too. And in 78-82ish, Gunne Sax dresses and skirts were still really big, as were Famolare or Cherokee shoes. What am I missing? Not sure. But parts of the 80s styles were pretty cool. Others- not so much. But I prefer today, where you're pretty much able to wear anything and be in style. (Said while wearing yoga pants and a Doctor Who t-shirt. ;-) )

The good thing about shoulder pads was that in a lot of ways it was girl power. Women were finally really hitting the workforce hard and had a college education. As it is less politically correct now, it is/was a man's world. To be able to be treated equally to men, women essentially had to look like men, that was the thought process at least. Since the toughest or most manly men generally had big, broad muscular shoulders, that was the one thing women could mimic with clothing. Hence, strong, broad, muscled looking shoulder pads. I just remember being a younger and at one point trying on one of my moms suits and my god those things were awful.
@gojewla8 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting theory. I always though the idea was simply to look more angular.
@kristenungstad32528 жыл бұрын
Michelle Tabisz Women also wore shoulder pads during WWII. The men were away fighting, so women had to fill their civilian roles, such as working in factories, mining, forestry and so on. Women needed broad, almost manly, shoulders to carry both a woman's and a man's burden.
@wanderingokamikitsune8 жыл бұрын

Hi! Love this! I lived it all - I was 18 in 1980 and wore ALL of the 80’s fashions you mentioned - esp BIG HAIR! You did forget to mention 2 of the biggest trend clothes of the 80’s - “Parachute Pants” and “Spandex pants” like the black ones worn by Olivia Newton John in the movie “Grease” and the Parachute Pants worn by “Johnny” in the hit movie Karate Kid. My girl friends and I would wear these out to Dance Clubs in the 80’s. Would LOVE to see them if you ever update this! 😃

Great list! But I think big hair, shoulder pad or scrunchies should've rather been at the top. The athletic wear was worn specifically by fitness freaks and the younger crowd while abovementioned trends filtered through from young to old and was unavoidable whether at school, work or parties.

If you want the definitive eighties preppy look, one of the most popular eighties movies of all time was Pretty in Pink, you should throw in a picture of Andrew McCarthy and James Spader in their look through out that entire movie. They were the eighties. All the saved by the Bell clips you used were from the early nineties. Just fyi. :)
@jamesr17035 жыл бұрын
I remember that jean jackets with the collar turned up were so cool. The preppy look defines the 80s. LaCoste V-neck sweaters with a white t-shirt underneath, Guess jeans, hair gel, high-top sneakers, woven belts, pleated pants, polo shirts, Wayfarer sun glasses, mini-skirts of all kinds, slim leather ties and sweaters tied and worn over the shoulders. The first couple years of a decade generally look similar to the previous one. The change is gradual.

I was into Neon and Denim Jackets. Neon screamed that you were there, Denim Jackets were so comfortable and completed your outfit.

Someday these looks will come back, I mean I remember a teacher of mine saying looks don't really disappear they just go out of style for a while. I mean manbuns were the rage in Ancient Greece. The 1960's in a way were inspired by the style of the 1920's.

Hammer pants should have been in the 90's

I think it should be in the 90's. I think it technically came out late 80's but I don't think it represents the 80's.

I hope the 2000's video wouldn't just be filled with trends of early 2000's, like I usually is. People seem to forget that 2005-2009 existed. The early 2000's was iconic & memorable because of pop culture that time & it's pretty different from the normal fashion now but the later half was great too & ppl barely talk about is probably because it still look similar to gp fashion style nowadays.

Thumbs down. Iconic decades ended in 1990. Other decades have a few things solely their own. Otherwise, they r all pretty bland and fade into the background then blur together.

Claire Riri The early 2000s for girls was very girly and preppy looking lol I wont ever forget the flared jeans with those skirts Or dresses OVER the jeans and the low low rise jeans Or skirts with those thongs or belly belts showing on top of the jeans and scarfs or tyes as Belts and Juicy sweat gear & the botton down shirts with the different colored lines on them, with little purses and the blinged out flip cellphones Yep the early 2000s was COMPLETELY different then what people wear today, people can't forget about it, Those less then 10 years was the Last time we are ever going to see a completely different style last for years, Now ? we have NOTHING just repeats from eras before today Or boring ass clothes which is sad a.f!

Forgot army-style pocket jeans (not camo), carpenter jeans, designer jeans, peter pan collared blouses, leather clogs, white leather sneakers, hair combs (to hold back your hair), western-style shirts with pearled buttons, the fanny pack (one that should stay in the 80s), and more.
