I know- I was surprised that it was only #10. Cheers was a great show, but there was nothing particularly 80s about it. Miami Vice began and ended at exactly the right time1984-1989. It is the most dated of the shows on this list, but that is not meant as a put down. It may have been style over content, but WHAT style!

Well, the way they described "decade defining" (0:52) didn't require any of these shows to be "mostly" in the 80s. I thought MWC's best seasons were the first 3-4 seasons (with Steve Rhoades as Marcy's husband), and those seasons were mostly in the 80s.

I can see that for Roseanne but for me, I'll never forget the Married with Children marathon in Nov 1989, where on a school night, I got so drunk drinking Yukon Jack and ended up busting open a tooth because I slipped on McDonalds entrance way. I then somehow signed a form with ambulance crew that I didn't need help and then passed out drunk in a ditch with freezing water. I woke up in the hospital with my dad escorting me out. Damn that was fun. All hail the 80s.

I really feel "Roseanne" was FAR more 90's influential that 80's. I mean the 1980's dragged over into the 1990's to the point where what people think of as "90's" really didn't get going until 93-94, but this show was quintessentially 90's even early on. The 80's was all about "pretty people", preppy clothing and clean wealthy families. This was NOT 80's.

I was 'just' too young for watching Miami Vice (more of a Family Ties kid), but still ensconced in white, hot pink, and teal fashion and fantastic music during my early teen years. It was amazing. I'll never forget the day my mechanic step-father brought a customer's DeLorean home and let me check it out. Good times. Still, the 1984 Porsche 911/930 was the one that caught my eye and captured my imagination. I'm 45 now, and I was able to have a late 70's 911 in my driveway for a couple of years before I had to let her go. DREAM ACCOMPLISHED in my eyes. I hope you all get to accomplish your hopes and dreams and feel what it's like.

Problem with those top10s, they are only about US... In France, Cheers is almost unknown (i'm not even sure it was aired here), American talk shows also aren't aired here. So those top10s Never correspond to our points of view. I would have put Married with children or Cosby Show way higher because they were far more popular here ! Also in France McGuyver would certainly be first... (people don't kniw Richard Dean Anderson, Everyone calls him McGuyver, that's how it is popular around here)

It's not about it being from US..It's about the most globally known forms of entertainment..When it comes to TV shows,US leads the way followed by Britain(in terms of global popularity)..Old school rock and roll is dominated by UK followed by US..Newer forms of music is a bit more divided..Hollywood is the most dominant force in terms of movies..So obviously, they look at global popularity as the main factor..And English is the global language of the world..Sometime non-english movies like Oldboy make the lists because of their popularity worldwide..This is coming from someone who lives in Saudi Arabia who knows most of these shows(including Cheers) but very few from non-English forms of entertainment(excluding Animes)

Taxi not being mentioned in a top 10 list of any 80's tv show requires another list. If "Decade Defining" doesn't apply, "Greatest Ever Television" must. I hope that another criteria is applied to future ranking of television programs through history. The only reason that Taxi shouldn't be on this list is that it transcended its time. Kudos for including Late Nite with David Letterman

This is a very good list, but here are a couple that deserved at least an honorable mention: Dallas: It started in the 70's, but really took off in 1980 with the "Who Shot JR" storyline. It was an incredibly glamorous mix of sex, politics and business--along with plenty of ruthless characters, and an interesting cliffhanger for just about every season (although not always an interesting resolution). It petered out by the end of the decade with the departures of just about every major character, but nonetheless its impact is hard to be denied. Moonlighting: This show was lightning in a bottle for the first two and a half seasons, but petered out near the end due to cast conflicts, mediocre storylines and a writer strike. However, in its prime, it was untouchable, and pretty much defined the term "dramady." Plus, it really took breaking the fourth wall to a hilarious level (even if that in and of itself became a major crutch in its last two seasons).

This has been the toughest decade yet to pick, likely due to how much greatTV there was. Still, I have to question some choices. Cheers above Cosby? I don't see it. And while the list properly included Miami Vice, they omitted others. For one, Dallas was a defining 1980s show, not a 1970s show; it was money, oil, power, greed and business; it was Reaganism made manifest. How could it not be here? And while I loved Golden Girls, it was not a decade defining show. Finally, Transformers did start then, but if you wanted to include a cartoon, they should have gone with G.I. Joe, another true Reagan-era show.

Admittedly MWC had jumped the shark well before its 10th season, but the first few seasons were like your television, in the late 80's and very early 90's basically saying "here's what TV comedy is going to look like in the future". It had pretty big impact initially and there were those who wanted it off the air after basically one episode.

It had 11 seasons, and it was funny. Way funnier than Roseanne. Though the first half of the series for Roseanne was funny after that it went down hill, it was as if they were trying to tackle a specific topic or cause rather than being funny. You can do both, but sometimes it came off as if it was trying too hard to be something it wasn't

Not even an honourable mention for He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe?! It was hugely popular, and also very much a product of the 80s. The first ever cartoon based on a toyline, which paved the way for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Transformers, and GI Joe, to name just a few.
