@@willstepto992 he has a point though. I liked the movie, because I read the book ani it is nice visual addition to the book. But those who have not read it will be confused. Too much has happened, too many complex characters and none of their motivation is properly explained. I am afraid that dune is the kind of book that can never be filmed properly. There will allways be something missing and it is not the filmmakers fault. Or maybe we will have 3,5 hour directors cut version that will be awesome.

I prefer Max von Sydow's performance as Liet Kynes. He had a saintly and intellectual quality. Other than that, the casting was fine. Paul didn't have the divine aura in this version which I think is what Frank Herbert intended. The Sardaukar looked more fearsome. They looked ridiculous with their hazmat suits in David Lynch's film.

When I was a kid, I didn't understand why this was my father's favorite movie. As a teenager though I really began to love the 1984 version. I hated to read but as I had always heard the book is always better than the movie. So, I read it and indeed as he said it was better. The problem with the 1984 version is that it lacked continuity with the novel. Weirding weapons, etc. I still love the 1984 version but after watching Dune 2021 for now 4 times, this is the Dune movie that I will now cling to as it is a much better adaptation to the book. The only thing I giggle at is not being able to disconnect Oscar Isaac from star wars' poe dameron.

The most interesting difference to me is that the 2021 version begins to explore the Jihad that Paul is unleashing - and that it is a bad thing. The 1984 version saw the story as a traditional hero myth - he "brings peace" after winning. That is a very superficial reading of the novel which is partly about the exploitation of vulnerable populations with religious mythology as well as the juggernaut of history starting from actions that Paul is more than conflicted about. The later novels show the corrupting nature of all this and the billions dead in the Atreides name. Paul's armies end up far worse than the Harkonnens. To me, that's the brilliance of Herbert's story: that it works as both an epic where we root for a heroic protagonist against evil forces but also as an examination of the tide of history and how fanaticism is very dangerous when unleashed.
@dan2124
@dan2124 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely spot on. That's what makes me giggle somewhat at people yelling it as a 'white-savour' narrative, when the novels are quite literally the opposite, and serve as a warning against the concept of messiahs and worshiped heros. Part 2 and esspecially Messiah should certainly give those complaints a kick in the butt :P
@pauldavidking9083
@pauldavidking9083 2 жыл бұрын
@@dan2124 I think the director and screenwriters can handle it - they are confident enough to do it. But it will be difficult for some people. That said, the next one should be so unbelievably overwhelming in terms of battle and spectacle that I'm sure people won't be complaining. I'm unclear: are they making two more movies to finish the first novel? I know Villeneuve said he wants to do the second book but first things first.

Precisely. As Frank Herbert put it: "When religion and politics travel in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way. Their movements become headlong - faster and faster and faster. They put aside all thoughts of obstacles and forget the precipice does not show itself to the man in a blind rush until it's too late."
@TywinLannister666
@TywinLannister666 2 жыл бұрын
It absolutely did not. I cannot believe you just said that. It is pretty much universally known that Frank Herbert was using the series as an elaborate warning that, in his OWN WORDS "Charismatic leaders should come with a warning label" ala Stalin, Pol Pot, Donald Trump, and Cult of Personality, etc. The list goes on for literal millennia. If this comes of as salty or aggressive, I apologize. Im just genuinely shocked that you didn't know that. Or are you trolling really fuckin' well? Either way, what I said is the truth. Feel free to look up the absolutely redonkulous amount of papers/studies/interviews about the very topic and Frank's views on it. The man was an INSANELY savvy political theorist. Its almost prophetic in how accurate some of his warnings play out in real time here in 2022.

Loved both version. Owned every format of Lynch's version since 1984. People forget, at the time CGI was in it's infancy. What Lynch did at that time and bringing the story to life was ground breaking. Sure. Looking back on it now looks totally cheesy compared with Villeneuve's brilliant adaptation, but still should not take away from what Lynch accomplished for the time. Enjoy both, for what they are. Neither should be bashed as better than the other. Just enjoy.

Nothing normal about the Dune world or being a teenager when you're the heir to the throne of a planetary monarchy. The Dune universe doesn't necessarily provide for things like what we consider "teenage" life. I love Timothee but he's almost too much of a teen compared to the vibe of the books. Timothee's Paul is quite casual for someone who is haunted by prescient dreams and is taking on leadership of a planetary govt in exile. The problem was they cut so much of the story and the film you had to have read the book/books to make sense of what was going on the story had some big holes in it. Both are well-beloved books with strong cult followings who never had successful adaptations that got off the ground with decades between attempts. I remember seeing this as a kid in the '80s and the "anti-gravity devices" and worms weren't hokey back then. And Lynch's adaptation of the sound weapons were awesome! All in all the '84 version was an epic movie and ground breaking. Even in the '80s, the movie gave a lot of power to women and underscored the theme of "a king is only as powerful as his queen". You have to remember #1) who the director was (and if you're a fan of Lynch's symbolic visions, you'll love the '84 version), and #2) the year it was made in. For the '80s, it was one of the best.

It doesn’t age well though. At all even. A lot of the things in the original dune can easily be criticized whereas the new dune is a closer adaptation and a better version of the two. You can say the 84 one was good, but there was definitely stupid ass decisions made in that movie such as ditching the close combat(which is fucking brilliant). Also the shield cgi looks dated asf now, sure making changes are always good but they can be bad and the dune 84 one overall made bad changes. Also it’s not that the reviewer didn’t grow up with the 84 version it’s just that comparing the two the 2021 version easily does things better

Man you 84 fanboys are cringe. Even for it's time the effects were laughable and heavily criticized, Kenneth MacMillan was so obnoxious as the Baron. The Baron was supposed to be frightening, cunning, and very intelligent but in the 84 version he was a loud flying buffoon. Lynch was putting his unnecessary weirdness that didn't fit. Milking cat for antidote, pulling heart plug, upside down cow that Raban took a piece of, and a bogus ending that the author hated. He also ignored the theme of Dune which is never trust leaders or those who has a messianic following.

@@bootyjiggle5695 I can see what you're saying when you are comparing it to the original books. Yes, I agree, the new version sticks to Herbert's writings better than Lynch's. But I'm one of those odd balls that don't care if you stick to the original story, as long as you told it well - and Herbert was the same way. He worked with Lynch and approved of his changes. Herbert, an author, understood that translating books verbatim to film didn't always work. He understood that what was important was capturing the essence and feeling. When Lynch originally took this on, he wanted to tell the whole story and Herbert said, "You've got to be either stupid or crazy to try something like this." True (actual quote). How can you tell such an epic story in one movie? Well, Lynch tried, and what he brought to the story was its epicness and that otherworldly feeling that spanned eons. He did it through a variety of avenues - the sound track, the costumes, the sets, the actors, the cinematography.... In 1984, there was nothing like this, at least not on a cerebral level. Sure, there was Empire and a hand-full of other classics, but how many of those really made you think? This was ground breaking and Herbert loved it.

The 1984 version's fatal flaw (in addition to the sometimes laughable acting of Kyle MacLachlin) is the ending voiceover: "Where there was war, now there would be peace..." No! No! No! The entire point of Dune is that Paul foresees continuous war (jihad) as humankinds' sole chance of salvation ("the Golden Path"). If the film had ended with Alias' "How can this be...because he is the Kwisat Haderach," it would have been a far better film, perhaps even worthy of its cult status.

"Dune" (1965) is one of my favorite novels, as well as one of my favorite movies. This would be the 2021 film adaptation. I think they are both equally amazing. What makes the book better then the film are Jessica's specific affiliations with the Baron, Duke Leto, and Thufir Hawit. These affiliations are omitted from the movie. What makes the film better then the book is Paul's relationship with Duncan Idaho. The book makes it clear Duncan is a loyal warrior to the Atredies family. The novel does not emphasize, however, Duncan's friendship with Paul Atredies.

Though I have fond memories of watching the 1984 version ( we got to stay up late and eat ice cream for dinner in the form of banana splits-my dad insisted), I think this newer version is a better take on the books. I did miss the narration and the red headed baron was missed, but the Harkonen are better envisioned by this new director and not so cheesy like in the 84 version. I was very skeptical also that this movie would lose something when it came to the costuming as the 84 version had wonderful, colorful, opulent costumes; however. seeing the few grand clothing designs, imo, made more of an impact. When lady Jessica and her ladies exited the ship and she wore that flowing gold made her a lonely flower in a dry land. I look forward to the next installments.

I agree...prefer this version, but did miss the voiceovers. I always liked "I like this Duke" from Kynes, Paul reciting "I shall not fear", all the little mantras people had...even the person charged with sucking pus from the Baron's boils! :) There were a few in the movie...of course Jessica doing "I will not fear" while Paul is tested (I preferred it being Paul, though). One thing I found kinda annoying was how some major characters weren't even named on screen (PIter especially), and I would've liked to see more Thufir. BUt certainly, a better adaptation of the book!

The effects were awesome for the time and the costuming was magnificent. Lynch also had a way of creating a "dream scape".... a fairy tale land brought to life. Also, I found the women in Lynch's version very strong - especially by '80s standards. There was more subtlety and internal power struggle. Sorry, but I just adore Lynch's version, especially the original extended version.

For the life of me I can't figure out, with all of the focus on the new film, why the SyFy Channel miniseries gets completely overlooked. David Lynch's film left SO much out, trying to shove it all into one standard movie, that we should really be comparing the new film to the miniseries...so much more material available to compare. That being said, while I love this new film, there are parts of the story that the miniseries did better. And some parts of the story were ONLY covered by the miniseries; the exposition of how the universe is a careful balance of the "tripod" of Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild and Lannserat...any explanation of Mentats...Paul's trip among the Highliners...Dr. Yueh and Sukh training...even Jessica's unique relationship with her Duke, choosing to bear him a son which sets all of the events in motion, is missing from the new film. So while I do like Villaneuve's movie and can't wait for part two (probably in about four years), I'm still very partial to the SyFy miniseries. (BTW, if you haven't yet, get and watch the special edition version of the miniseries, it's even better!)
