Fact is, it’s based of the movie the omen where the nanny to the antichrist arrives as a devil in disguise after the death of the first nanny. Sure, there were probably no nanny deaths in good omens, thankfully, but they still went with a similar touch.

I didn't interpret Crowley's shoving Aziraphale against the wall as anger so much as fear. Unlike in the church scene, where there's no way to pass that action off as demonic, in the modern day Aziraphale labeling his actions as 'nice' means he loses all demonic credit in the eyes of anyone watching, because an angel approves of what he's done. The violence is to put him back in 'demonic' territory, assuring anyone watching that he's not having a tender moment with the angel, nope, nothing to see here. It also gets Aziraphale to shut the hell up and watch what he says in public. You'll note Aziraphale is startled, but not at all afraid of Crowley, because despite the surface violence of the action Crowley isn't hurting him, the 'slam' is gentle enough that his head doesn't hit the wall. Contrast Uriel doing the same thing later on. Context and trust is everything. They've been around each other long enough for Aziraphale to instinctively know that Crowley isn't going for the throat, he's quite relaxed even if he's taken off guard. He's not even trying to get away, which means it really doesn't occur to him that Crowley might discorporate him just to prove a point.
@TheNamelessNarrator
@TheNamelessNarrator 5 жыл бұрын
I think Crowley had a fear for a lot of it that if he let more of his kindness show without even realizing it then he could put himself at risk of true death, since a kind demon has no use in Hell.

I feel like the book does some things better- like Terry Pratchett’s style of descriptive writing for long passages of comedy - but that don’t work in visual media. So, the show has DIFFERENT things that would probably NOT work on the page. In other words - excellent adaptation.

1. In the book, Crowley looks like a young man with dark hair who wears good suits. In the show he looks like a middle-aged man with red hair who wears whatever you wish to call that. 2. In the book, Crowley lives in a white flat, with a white leather sofa, plants throughout, and a computer that he upgrades every few months. In the show, he lives in a black flat filled with some kind of miasma, all the plants are in one room, and he owns a ...throne... with a desk to match. In both, he owns the original sketch of the Mona Lisa. 3. In the book, he has a bookcase, and all his books are in alphabetical order. In the show, he doesn't read books, though he has one on astronomy. 4. In the book, Adam has an older sibling. In the show, he is an only child. I think that most of the other major differences have been covered in the previous 400+ comments.

I love the way Crowley's flat is described in the book, but it's probably good they did something else with it in the show, not just to be more modern, but because HEAVEN has an all white design in the show. Can you imagine the potential fan theories about Crowley pining for Heaven with his all white flat if they'd gone with that in the show? Probably too distracting. Though interesting, to be sure.

I didn't really feel like the part where Satan really showed up really did much. He was so huge and scary and defeated in 5 seconds. I didn't like how Satan was all father-figure like. It really felt like he was going to ground his kid. The greatest difference to me was the ending. Crowley figures out the actual plan (the immortals vs the mortals) as god, walking by, makes him forget because it’s too early. Of course they didn’t explore the Them as being the four horsemen either. The metaphysical stuff being left out really changes the feel of the book.

I'm not going to lie, I really found the ending to feel like an anti-climax because of the way they changed that detail. That and the fact that Adam doesn't go through pregnant lady mood swings in the book, rather that he's still seeing it as a game he's playing with his friends.

As for the Them, I loved that the further in the book, the more each kid resembles one of the Horsemen. You could pick it up way before they met at the air base. The book just doesn't treat the reader like an idiot. For example, the book just describes a war correspondent that's very successful because wherever she goes, a war breaks out. And you know who that is. It doesn't need to be so in-your-face. I still love the series though. The book has better story and humor, but the series has David and Michael's chemistry. I think the two complement each other in a nice way.

@@wardabatool717 not really. I mean if they WERE the gardener and Nanny in the book, and by that logic, the tutors as well, there are then two things in the book that don't make sense. If Crowley and Aziraphale are both living in Warlock's house, why do they meet at public museums and loud CONCERTS and crowded buses to talk? A big house like that, both of them there, and you're telling me there's not one spare corner they could compare notes? They need to go OUT to talk? Also, why would Aziraphale call HIMSELF "my little team," and not take full credit for influencing Warlock? And if Book!Crowley was the Nanny where did he get a dog named Rover from? Crowley can barely keep his temper with houseplants, we know he dislikes horses, and he has a DOG randomly? I don't buy it. Also I'm fairly certain Gaiman has confirmed that originally he and prachett weren't thinking of the Nanny as Crowley in disguise when they wrote the book, but it came into the adaptations because it's funnier if it's literally him.

It isn't obvious in the book. Moreover, there's even a phrase that the nanny and the gardener left being much surprised, and were replaced by the two teachers. So, thinking logically, it sounds silly that A and C engaged some people/creatures when they themselves could have been under surveillance of their headoffices, but the book has it like this. Probably the authors tried to change it, but a phrase from a previous version remained unnoticed.

In the late 90's I met Terry Pratchett, and though I knew a few of his (Discworld) books I hadn't learned to recognize the authors name, so didn't realize who he was. (He was very nice!) As I do when meeting someone who's obviously British, I commented that in my youth I'd spent a couple of years living in England (instead of America), in a little place called Peppard Common, north of Reading. Mr. Pratchett was the only person I've ever met who knew it. Years, and many readings of "Good Omens" later I came to imagine Lower Tadfield looked a lot like where I'd lived, especially the chalk pit. (And yes, Peppard Common is in Oxfordshire.)

When REALLY, Neil changed it to a little Irish girl voice because he thought Aziraphale's voice suddenly breaking through after a high pitched female one would be funnier on screen. What I really hate - not about the series, I Love the series - is how the fans are turning this into a "gay or not gay, there is no in-between"-battle. No, they're not openly gay on screen. Yes, you can interpret them as such, if you wanted. Everyone would be cool with that, from Gaiman to the actors. But if you don't want to, it's just as fine. Since - per the book - angels (and by default then demons as well) don't have a gender if they don't really want to have one, it doesn't really matter, does it? Why not just leave this as it is, an asexual three-way love-story between an angel, a demon and humanity, with all their faults and wrinkles. How about those that can't understand love without sex just stop being so damn loud and let everyone else enjoy this, too? Be happy in your imagination and let everyone ELSE have theirs.
@reversepolarity8981
@reversepolarity8981 5 жыл бұрын
It's not an interpretation. Neil Gaiman has explicitly stated he wrote the script as a love story. Michael Sheen has also said that he is certain Aziraphale "falls in love with" Crowley after the church is bombed. Angels technically have no sexuality because they don't have a fixed gender. I'm actually eyeballs deep in this fandom and have seen only a small percentage of fans label Aziraphale/Crowley as gay, because it's very widely accepted that they're closest to non-binary people. There is, however, canonical basis for the gay representation. First being the book makes mention of angels being sexless unless they "made an effort" to be otherwise. Which comes after a description of Aziraphale as usually being mistaken as "gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide." Both the book and series make mention of the discreet gentleman's club on Portland Place where Aziraphale learned the gavotte, which Neil Gaiman has confirmed is the Hundred Guineas Club. It was, in fact, an exclusive gay men's club. Good Omens has been groundbreaking for its lack of queerbaiting. It very unashamedly and matter of factly presents two (mostly) male presenting angels as being in love, and the writers, director and actors have been very open and honest about this. So my question to you would be why can't you, for once, be happy with your own imagination/interpretation of Aziraphale & Crowley and leave everyone else to theirs? I'm sure you could find literally thousands of platonic buddy movies or heteronormative romances of every description and media type. Whereas nothing else like this exists. I'd also take your objections more seriously if your username/avatar wasn't plucked from a sleazy 70's hetero porn film.

The name comes actually from my cat Fritz, but I did play with the double-meaning by choosing my username. If that's offensive, I'm sorry for that. I won't change it, though. I thought choosing Heathcliff instead of (very ... yikes) "Fritz" from the film would be enough to tell people that I don't mean THAT Fritz. Maybe I should have gone with Garfield (or my cat?) Second: I never said and never will say that Crowley and Aziraphele DON'T love each other. They do, that's pretty clear. And maybe there's a sexual attraction there as well - I don't see it, but who cares, right? - but there is CERTAINLY some kind of love between them. I'm not sure how to label it, but "sexual" is not the first that comes to mind. Maybe my mistake is that the term "gay" for me always includes sexual attraction to the same gender? Together with every other form of attraction. Maybe that's wrong -I apologize in that case. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I'm not sure what bothers me so much, tbh. Maybe it's because in another fandom I used to be in, a group of shippers got to be very loud and annoying by wanting to see and interpret everything their chosen m/m pairing did on screen as hidden sexual tension, and it's just... so exhausting. It's probably my problem - they seem to be happy in their believes. So maybe that's my fear here: that the "wow, they're so in love with each other"-people will get as exhausting as in the other place. It does get a lot of mentions underneath most videos, but maybe that's my bias. What I would wish is that two guys (or women, for that matter) kissing each other or hugging each other or showing ANY kind of affection to each other would become normal and not even worth commenting on different from how hetero-kissing, hugging and affection-showing is commented on. Third: I always thought when Gaiman said it's a love-story, he meant it in more ways than just Aziraphele and Crowley. For me, the lovestory is also between Adam and his friends, Adam and the town he loves SO much that Aziraphele noticed it the moment he and Crowley entered the Tadfield-area. Basically, Adam and the world. Which again spills over into C and A, who love not just each other, but humanity as well. Especially Crowley, who is repeatedly shocked when God punishes humans for .... whatever. And asks God to not "test them to destruction". The two of them love the world as it is, with every flaw and FOR every flaw. They see the diversity and freedom of human motives and actions as something to strive for, especially in contrast to the boring, foretold lives of Heaven and Hell. Of course you could add the lovestory between Anathema and Newt, Madame Tracy and Shadwell, if you want. I personally think those "regular" love-stories are the least important ones, though. For me, the basics are the love Adam, Crowley and Aziraphele have for the world that is the kicker and which put the end to the Apocalypse. It's just as cheesy as that: love conquers all and wins in the end. Which again is nicely tied up with Crowley and Aziraphele loving and trusting each other to swap bodies and survive, and then dine at the Ritz. (I would also conclude that God did love her creation just as much, and that she was really pleased with how her little gambles turned out in the end and that she'd been right to believe in humanity's free will) Goddammit, I so ADORE this story! I adore the series and the book - both in unbelievably equal measures. I love what they added in the series and I love what is in the book and was left out on screen. (Well... *mostly* love everything they added, there are a few things, like when Adam hovers around his friends, that I could have gone without. Weird choice there, if you ask me. ) As for your point about the groundbreaking "not-queer-baiting" - well. Good point there. I never thought of it that way, tbh, maybe because my attractions usually fall on the hetero-side. "Usually" - I have a pretty long list of exceptions, so... all a bit wibbly-wobbly there. I know you didn't ask for that explanation, but it might explain why I never saw the "groundbreaking" in this series. But since I'm not LGBT, I am probably not as sensitive to queer-baiting as others. I wish for a world where everyone can openly state who they're attracted to, who they love. What I find a bit tiresome is when people get really possessive of their "ships". And that includes m/f ships just as much. Especially if it jumps into Real Life, and people openly mourn when an actor finds a partner and the pairing people dreamed of is now not "available" anymore. I find that a bit intrusive in the actors' life-choices. (And if it turns into booing for the actor's partner, I get downright angry). But I guess that's all my own problem, and I should just shut the hell up and let everyone be happy. I'll try to do better from now on and just shut my trap. Maybe watch some Good Omens again.

I agree with you, Mr. Fritz. I really love the show and wanted to join the fandom (planning on reading the book soon), but I've been finding the fandom at large really toxic over this ship. They are annoyingly quick to say "oh, Gaiman says it's a love story," but get huffy and unpleasant if anybody should point out he ALSO said they weren't gay, because they're angels and sexless, and that he never defines what KIND of love the story between them is. While the author is cool with fans taking it whichever way they want, fellow fans are nasty to others if they say they see C/A as friends. And Heaven forbid you should point out any flaws in their logic (though they are quick to point it out in yours). It's seeming like I will only ever get to enjoy this amazing work on my own. Because the fans here are very exclusive despite their false show of inclusivity. They only welcome those who share their exact opinion. I love Crowley and Azerphel (sorry for the spelling) too, but if I don't see them exactly how they do, I'm not welcome. So I get it, mate, I get it.

You know what really bothers me about the show? How the kids were written. That is NOT how kids that age act and it's generally bad in their portrayal. I also think they shouldn't've had Satan actually appear and been like the book for that moment.

The kids had lots of interesting and funny conversations and games in the book. Also, even when the Antichrist in Adam was awake, he was never mean to his friends. He never made them shut up. He never said anything among the lines of "I don't care that you're not my friends anymore". He wanted to destroy the world that grown-ups wrecked and build a new, better one for him and his friends. And they were too afraid to say anything. Right until they ask what part of the world Adam wants for himself. And when he admits all he needs is Tadfield, that's when the true Adam comes back and decides to stop the Horsemen.

They probably weren't though. Aziraphale makes it fairly clear he's not the gardener by saying his "team" is responsible for Warlock's being "too normal" and he does it in a corrective manner after saying "my influence". If it was him, he wouldn't have needed to correct himself. And while Crowley had a big part in that Nanny getting hired, as he even considered hurricaning her competition for the job away like the Nannies in Mary Poppins, he doesn't seem to literally BE her in the book. She has a different character/personality from him as well as a big dog (Crowley isn't shown as being a "pet person") that followed her everywhere. I figured she was just some random Satanist Crowley hired in the book.

Interesting fact: when you see the escalator scene, you can see both aziraphale and Crowley walking on water. They both have faith. Not only that, focus on how Crowley sinks in the water. Since he’s a demon he’s lost faith. But for aziraphale he’s always have faith. It’s just like how in the Bible Jesus is walking on water. Just thought that was interesting uwu Edit: 5:22 here’s what I’m talking about

Technically Gabriel should be listening to aziraphael since Gabriel is an archangel and aziraphael is a principality which is higher than archangel

cai I've done waaaaay too much reasearch on this and it really depends on which specific religion one practices. Some say archangels are below all the other specific ones with the normal angels (the two terms being practically interchangeable), whereas others have them right at the top, only second to god.

The prophecy about the four horseman. Isn’t the “other four” being Shadwell, Madam Tracey, Aziraphale and Crowley? Crowleys car was on fire and the other three were on a flying motorbike

In the book, there were four hells angels that rode with the original horsemen and became the "other" four horsemen. When they were cut from the tv show, it did not make sense for them to be included in the relevant prophecy. I cannot remember if "three as two..." bit was in the book but it is an accurate representation of shadwell et al.

The book never says what color hair Crowley has, apart from mentioning it's dark, so book!Crowley could easily have had auburn hair; auburn can be dark.

I discovered Good Omens this summer and watched both seasons of the show. I liked it a lot and later bought the book and read it in English. Since it's not my first language, I recognize that my comprehension was sometimes limited, and I may not have fully appreciated some of the good parts. The descriptions of all the settings and actions were definitely on point, but overall, I would say that for once I prefer the show over the book. To me, the relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale is much more elaborated. Their flashbacks through the centuries were a delight. They really resonate with me. Overall, I would say that the show made me develop a stronger affection for the characters, especially Crowley and Aziraphale. The fact that they were played by the incredible David Tennant and Michael Sheen surely helped... PS : i loved equally the International Express Guy in the book and the show :)

Well they had to add drama somehow. Also, they were a LITTLE angsty about their friendship in the book, like when Aziraphale wants to call Crowley when he works out who the Antichrist is but worries for several hours (if I remember correctly) that it would be "wrong" to do so. I think the only version their friendship was completely chill and angst free in was the radio play. They literally didn't worry about getting caught at all (except for one line about "would your side give me assylum/Ha nope, yours?/nope, sorry dear") and it's kinda cute how calm they are about it.
