Edit - Regarding number 9: Just thought I'd throw this out there since some people are taking it the wrong way(even though I said this in the video): I don't have a problem with streamers. They have a right to do what they want just like all of us, and in my opinion the more exposure on the game, the better. I'm undecided, but I may end up even streaming myself(if there is a demand for it), so this video isn't in any way meant to disparage streamers, or their communities - just to take note of the effects that they'll have on the game.

@@hackhenk mate you are kicking a pillow with this argument.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/honSZayMlqxqmKM this is the relaunch of Nostalrius, without comparison the BIGGEST pserver launch ever.... ONE SERVER, biggest queue i have ever heard anyone claim they experienced on launch night, was 12000 (however i don't believe that as i think the server queues were capped way lower, but whatever) but most people just logged the fuck in with 0 queue, mind you the server cap was 10k... Classic launched with how many servers? afaik 4 pvp realms were up prior to launch in eu, with 3 more opening on launch day before they even opened, and countless more the following day. Server cap was almost immediately increased to max (10k), and server queues were ridiculous on all of them.. Layering has the ability to split server pop into essentially 3 realms, so with layering in full effect you will see no more than ~3300 players at one point, however on launch night basically all automatic systems were maintained manually, and population on all layers were held at more or less what the server could handle... Layering was not in effect at all on nostalrius, but to claim it was largely outscaling blizzard servers is just ludicrous and not true.. btw the picture you linked is not a launch picture...

Also, on a serious note, since Classic has come out, I've been taking the time to specifically watch streamers play Classic who have never before played WoW until now, and seeing their wide-eyed wonder at the world around them is so heart-warming. They're getting that first-time experience, that joy of looking at the world map and realizing that, yes, you can go to every zone shown on the map (except Hyjal). I wasn't really interested in all the leveling and raiding at that time , but I wanted to keep in touch with old wow friends that moved there. this was during the pserver boom that eventually led to the launch of classic. I just would make a low lvl bank alt and hang around in cities, trying to get as rich as possible (after a small donation from those friends) It was fun to chat and also to discover what kind of things you could do at a very low lvl . I had one lvl 1 with the Arena Grand Master trinket (summoned to gurubashi arena, and patiently logged in during the night until I got 12 chests) it took about 6 weeks

For many of us, I actually believe WoW Classic re-release will bring us a better game than original release. And a predominantly adult community again. WoW always had it's bad folks, but servers quickly discovered who they were when they wouldn't shut up in trade chat, and we shunned them until they disappeared. Kids today don't have the patients WoW Classic will require. They want Poof, fast leveling, instant groups, and they're all about the pubs. I remember my first dungeon, the Deadmines, where I didn't understand the difference between need/greed, so I needed on everything; got scolded by my teammates, so I ran all the way to the inn in Lakeshire where I sat on the bed in one of the rooms upstairs. My GM whispered me asking me where I was, so he could come and talk to me to explain what I did wrong. I remember my first epic, which was the Salamander Scale Pants from Molten Core; something I used DKP for. The reason classic is a better game is because your choices have meaningful consequences and impacts on your gameplay. If you decide to fight something, it's a big deal and you have to pay attention. After you're done fighting you have to prepare and plan for your next fight. Fights are close and can require effort. If you pull too much, you die, and you have to ghost run back to your body, sometimes pretty far, with a repair bill. If you decide to go somewhere, you have to run and it takes a long time. If you get a better piece of gear, you instantly feel a difference. If you want to do a dungeon, you have to run there and speak to real people with words. You have to read quests and plan your route to be efficient. The power gap between pieces of gear and levels is greater so it actually means something. You can't transmog crap on a whim so finding cool looking gear is a big deal. You can't teleport and "fly" everywhere, skipping everyone and everything in the game.. the game feels much more like a world because of it. Flying and teleporting ruins games. Every progression step and every decision has a noticeable effect on your gameplay, poor decisions are punished and good decisions rewarded that's what makes it a much better game design. 120 levels makes levels, talents, skills, gear meaningless. Flying and teleporting makes the world skippable and meaningless. Group finder makes people meaningless. Retail wow is skippable and meaningless.
@HallyVee2 жыл бұрын
Although I agree with everything you said I'm obliged to point out that, as I do with our detractors, it doesn't mean Classic is "better" game design, but rather preferable to us. Better implies an objective measure of quality, and some simply prefer brainless meaningless games.

The nostalgia of the "new experience"... oh man, if I could recreate that. I've been away from WoW for 10 years, almost to the day. I just got back in on it a couple days ago, and I'm one, amazed at how much I retained, but also two, disappointed with how, dead it feels. I remember SLOWLY leveling, getting wiped in the Deadmine.... getting lost in Duskwood, finding the Inn FULL of players. Stumbling upon a world boss with dozens of players fighting it. I guess everyone is just grinding endgame now, just like most MMOs and even some nonMMOs. I hope Classic brings back some of that original experience...

One change I think we undervalue is stages in our lives. This is pure nostalgia fuel for millennials who were in high school at the time of classic. It was pre-recession, pre-university, pre-grownup. I imagine that Classic's massive time sinks combined with many nostalgic people having jobs and families now will make some parts of this a very different experience.

What they should do is make servers for each expansion, and then you can transfer your character to the next expansion all the way up to live. It would be a good pathway for people who want to take their time, and get the original experience without being stuck in the latest expansion. Plus, there will be people that don't transfer that can guide you through classic dungeons.

And the folks who don't play every day for months can experience all of each expansion.

I think that Classic will likely be just a quick and fun experience for most players. They'll try it out, have their nostalgic moments and maybe even raid a bit. After a few months though I think the majority will go back to what they were doing before it was released. I know I'll try it out if only for the nostalgia but the stagnation aspect is exactly why I won't stay. If they were releasing true "Progression" servers as Everquest has then I would consider staying long term. I took a lot of breaks from WoW over the years and it would be fun to relive some of the releases and feel what they were like in their prime eventually culminating in the server being a true "retail/live" server. I guess for some that defeats the purpose though.

I find it ironic how the community right now is praising WoW classic for its simplicity, difficulty, immersiveness, etc. and yet the very first thing madseason does is rag on is people that don't use add-ons. It has nothing to do with pride, add-ons literally change the way you play the game and they help automate your experience. The game offers everything you need to beat it without addons. as he mentioned in the video, a lot of those early vanilla addons are now added into the actual game on retail. but my question to anyone reading this is: does the automation problem of retail sound familiar to you? half of everyone's qualms with retail is how the game holds your hand too much. It's why we're having to go back to vanilla to begin with, to a game that's more engaging. I strongly encourage everyone deciding to try classic to leave your add-ons at the door! if not, add-ons may help water down a ton of great things about vanilla and what it has to offer.

I've been playing WOW since before Burning Crusade. i got tired of having to rechoose talents, etc., every time a new part of the game came out. From Lich King on, every new extension I bought meant having to start over with talents, spells, etc. One game removed some of my most useful, and favorite, talents, etc. Finally I bought BFA and guess what? Blizzard again made me have to revamp all my abilities. So I stopped playing for a year. When the Classic WOW came out I began playing it. That's when I realized how difficult WOW Classic was. Remembering to buy ammo was a pain - and it took away a bag slot. You pick up a lot of grey items after a kill and the money was coppers. Getting above 20 brought silver and a lot of stuff that was rated lower that what I was wearing. Selling it added to my money, so no real problem. It is still fun to play. I hope Blizzard adds Burning Crusade to Classic. Dranai are my favorite characters to play. Just don't reset all our abilities, spells, and talents.

I’d constantly get lost just trying to find my way around Undercity with my first character (who was also Undead - a warlock) lol. She was appropriately named “Dieyoung,” as I was dying nonstop with how clueless I was. 😂 When I finally made my way to Ogrimmar, that wasn’t much better either lol. Those main cities were just so massive and overwhelming, and feel even bigger when you’re outdoors in Ogrimmar seeing everyone speedily zipping around on their mounts (or even Shamans racing around in ghost wolf at lvl 20 iirc), but you’re still a LOONNG ways off from getting any sort of faster travel. Do you remember questing south of the Undercity, where there was powerful werwolves hiding everywhere in the tall greenery - particularly that ONE super elite werwolf? If you ran in to him, you’d always die and be stuck for eons, because as soon as you rezzed he’d get you right away again. Eventually the only solution after wasting so many times attempting to get past that monster was to give up and choose the 10 minute rez sickness debuff lol.

Back in the days of Ventrilo, I was in a guild where I purposely used a voice changer every time I spoke to them. Coupled with the terrible codecs, they told me I sounded just like "Red Leader" from "A New Hope". During raids when we were close to a boss kill with several people dead and people doubting we would win, I would start saying "Stay on target... STAY ON TARGET." I wish I had recorded it. It always got quite a few laughs, especially when we beat the said boss.

Also class imbalances were pretty big back in the day. Rogues were pvp kings along with mages. I may have hated raiding, but I loved everything else. At least all classes were unique back then. Sucks that they shut down the private server even if I never played on it. Tbph though I think not updating is what will hurt it the most. They weren't happy developing on the old system as it was tedious. Most likely they will not go back to that.
