I'm guessing the spider anamatronic is meant to be Arachne. In Greek mythology, she was a boastful weaver who challenged the goddess Athena to a weaving contest. When she lost, Athena turned her into a spider for her arrogance. That's my guess anyways

That original gorilla animatronic on the piano looks like something straight from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead. And that one with the skunks squirting you was definitely an original idea. Whether you like getting hit with water from that area of an animatronic or not. Definitely a travel story when you get back home.

While I do admit the Avocado Girls are very uncanny valley, I do love the rest of the Stew Leonard's animatronics. ESPECIALLY the Farm Fresh Five! Not only do they have cute designs in my opinion, but they remind me of Veggietales, Kitchen Kabaret, Food Rocks, and The California Raisins [I'm surprised the Raisins never had animatronics given how huge they were during the 80s]. A Stew Leonard's video would be amazing IMO, maybe I'm biased because of my adoration of the Farm Fresh Five and anthropomorphic food characters. I love anthropomorphic food characters and can't get enough of them. Honestly, I wish Disney could make an updated Kitchen Kabaret/Food Rocks hybrid with characters and elements form both shows, that would be a dream come true for me!

Jungle Jim's is a really cool chain of 2 stores. Besides all the wacky animatronics and a working monorail at the main location, they have very well stocked selection of specialty and international food. Like I just picked up some Ube flavoring for my coffee my last trip from their Philippines section. And the best part? They are very competitive pricing wise too.

I’d like to give a shout out to the animatronics in The Atlantis Show in the Shops at Caesar’s Palace in Vegas. Stumbled upon them when I was there a few months ago, and was very disturbed by their jerky movements, expressionless faces, and the fact that one of them is wielding a flame thrower.

Our West Edmonton Mall Scotiabank movie theatre (used to be Silver City) used to have an animatronic dragon in the lobby. She was on top of the main concession. Down the long hallway, there's a smaller concession with two baby dragon heads on top. It's not being used, but the babies are still there. The big concession was moved to the wall and the dragon, named Excalibur, was removed. She used to terrify me as a kid (hid in the bathroom), but then I fell in love with her. No maintenance was done on her and because she was above the concession, her skin attracted oils from the food and I heard it would fall onto guests making it a health hazard. Still, it was sad to see her go.

I’m SO glad you brought up Stew Leonard’s. I’m very well acquainted with Norwalk as my dad’s family lives up there, and they often get groceries from Stew Leonard’s. Every time I went there the animatronics would terrify me- all of them, no exceptions, and I’ve always hated going to that store. As much as I like animatronics, to me they really don’t belong in a supermarket.

One thing that gave me nightmares as a kid are two different attractions at Germany's Steinwasen park. One of them was a now defunct darkride called "Sagenhafte Schwarzwaldbahn" (or something) but it terrified me with its simple yet scary animatronics. The park also had a walkthrough based on animals from the the cold north and the ice age, including a big terrifying Yeti. Also, we do have stores filled with animatronics over here in the Netherlands too, the Hoogvliet stores have them. I don't know why, but I do know that their songs are on spotify so that is neat

I must've seen the updated version of Singing Sam when I was a kid, as I don't remember him looking so stilted when he was playing his piano. From my memory, he actually looked like he was playing the piano. Interestingly, this gorilla is my clearest memory of the Wall Drug Store. I don't even remember the T-Rex, which, from the footage I've seen, seemed to have been intentionally added to scare kids.

Laberinto del Minotauro is probably the ride that started my love for dark rides and animatronics, the first time I rode it as a kid I was blown away. For a while now I have the theory that the Spider is a reference to the myth of Arachne, who was turned into a spider by Athena and is usually turned into a mosntruous spider in adaptations of the myth. PD In the past Terra Mitica had another (semi) dark ride El Rescate de Ulises, based on the Odyssey wich also had it's fair share of creepy animatronics and scenes, with some submechanophobia too, sadly it closed after the covid lockdown. And yeah, the park's history is...interesting
