We were fortunate 2.5 years ago to be given a puppy whose momma is a registered German Shepherd and they suspect the father is a Blue Heeler. Gracie looks 100% Shepherd (black and tan) and was 8 weeks old when we got her. She is very smart and loyal and protective of us. She won't let us out of her sight!

Yes. What we mostly had because we hunted. The 2 that we had that were most protective were Black Labradors. We also had a Chocolate that weighed 95 lb (no fat). People were intimidated by his size, so no idea how he would have done as a protector, except one time when he took down another dog that was going after one of our sons. He did not hurt the other dog, just took him down and let him know he'd better leave or chill.

Doberman is my most favorite. I had such great experience with Dobermans. They are very intelligent and they don't bite people that easily. My Dobermans never bit anyone. Also Neopolitan Masitiff. Very smart and gentle. I miss them all

Had a friend of mine who had 2 youths climb over his back fence. Amazing how his German Shepherd sorted out the situation. Caucasian Shepherds are NOT to be messed with. If not properly socialised they become difficult out in public.

I know that Great Danes may have a “gentle giant” reputation but my sibling 2 year old Great Danes are incredible guard dogs that are incredibly loyal and especially the male being a massive dog, when they are both in protect mode not many full grown men would want to tackle them.

@@bordercollie1140 even what are considered long life dogs only live 12-14 years old, Great Dane around 10, so at the end of the day it’s not a huge difference and all dogs have a short lifespan. I feed mine raw and good quality dry and they are in fantastic condition

I had a jack russell chiwawha min. His name was Casey bc he would always case out the joint lol. He was gentle, alert, extremely intelligent, friendly and he loved to chase balls. I would throw the ball and give him a head start, then let my Italian Greyhound loose to catch him. He was so in love with my IG. While she tugged on his ear, he was so obsessed with the ball, he would run back to me with ball in mouth while the IG tugged on his ears. Boy, I loved him so much. I would recommend this mix to anyone!!

Whoa! It could be a mistake to list the Rhodesian Ridgeback as a potentially family friendly pet. Despite vehement discussions with RR lovers over the years, I am aware of too many first hand accounts of unprovoked and viscious attacks by RR’s against family friends or their children. A friend who 19:13 19:13 owned an RR well known to us as affectionate moved to Kinshasa, where his RR promptly bit the face off the adolescent daughter of a French diplomat, who sued our friend for a huge sum. But yes, RR’s do make good guard dogs and man-trackers.

Where's the boerboel? They are amazing family dog's and protector's as well. I've had a doberman, she was a love bug and protector as well, my brother had a rottie, that i could go for a walk with without a leash that only wanted to walk, didn't care about anything else, but, boerboel's are amazing dog's as well. Very loyal to their family

If you're going to place a lgd as number 1 then I think it should have been the Turkish Kangal. The Caucasian Shepherd would bark the place down if a piece of paper flew by where as a Kangal is much more clever and whatever thief gets inside your home is not getting out alive when a Kangal is there.

The more Rotties I meet, the better I like them as family pets and guard dogs. As someone already noted, Rotties in the home are mostly couch potato’s and playful clowns, but their very presence is alarming to potentially harmful strangers.
