Definitely agree that Mini Schnauzers are fabulous, highly intelligent dogs who are well suited and trust worthy to leave for reasonable amounts of time. They can be a bit 'barky' if 'positive' training isn't started early to curb the habit. Both of mine have been great at alerting me to strangers but are not 'barkers'.

I have a mini schnauzer, and he has always done well by himself. He's left alone for about 4 sometimes 5 hours five days a week. No accidents, doesn't destroy things, and just naps.

I have 3 shih tzus and they’re the chillest dogs. Although they need constant grooming, I find them rather independent since they dont need a lot of exercise. The three of them playing together is enough exercise for them. And when I come home from work they get soo energized to rush and greet me before I even step foot inside the door. After a while they’ll just cuddle and chill with me. They’re the best!

@@priyankarudra8854 we’ve only had one and he had separation anxiety. Not fun when they’re howling so much the neighbors complain. A lot of small dogs get that. So make sure to do your homework. Also some can be barky. Other than that Shih Tzu’s are sweet dogs.

I agree with Annette Therrien I have a miniature phantom poodle and I had to find just what made her feel secure. She is smart knows when I am leaving and if she will be going. No barking, but she is always so happy to see me come home. For the record I am retired so I am home with her most of the time and she goes with me a lot. No church, doctors offices, hospitals or stores. She travels to friends with me and when she gets older possibly if I go to the store for something quick (no hot cars or long stays in a vehicle).

Interesting however, in my opinion any well trained and loved Dogs can be left alone my experience with Rottweilers , Beagle, Argentine Dogos, Alaskan Husky , German Shepard’s, and Mix Breeds never had any situation with them. Now I have a cute lovable Chihuahua who is so adorable, and smart. Always let’s you know He is family.

Hmmmmm... Any animal can be left alone if trained well. I was raised with GSD's, and have had several as an adult. None of mine ever destroyed my furniture, clothing, or home. I worked, and would go home on lunch to let them out. Some days I couldn't. They never peeped or pooped in the house. Everyone has their own opinions, likes and dislikes, however, I'll stick with German Shepherd's.

I would NEVER recommend a Siberian Husky. First they have more energy than you and me combined. Most will be if you open the door to talk to anyone. And their worst trait: they shed like snowstorms! I'll pass.. I wear a lot of black pants They are adorable puppies but people who acquire them have no clue what they are in for.

@@JusDiff I learned so much from following the KZbin channel Sixty Formula (he has 2 Siberian huskies). The trick is to train the trainer. The human has to learn everything there is to know about teaching a puppy, otherwise, you are setting yourself (and your puppy) up for disaster. Find a KZbin channel that is best for yourself and learn, learn, learn. Be consistent with your puppy. I work from home so my puppy had severe anxiety separation when I went out so I started with small steps of just taking the garbage out where she could see me. Baby steps and working up. Now when I go out I tell her to go have a sleep and I'll be home soon. When I get home she's always in her crate sound asleep waiting for me. Her crate never ever gets locked but it's her space that she loves. I hope this helps and best wishes with being a first-time dog mom in the near future. It really is like having a baby (I've had those too!).

I have a mixed breed Chihuahua Yorkshire Terrier Teacup Puppy who is my therapy dog. As a puppy she is definitely high energy but eventually this will settle down to just being energetic. Since she is tiny, she'll never top five pounds, and she can burn off her energy running around the apartment playing with her toys and me, a retired senior citizen. She has a remarkable nose even for a dog as Yorkies were bred to get that rat and shake it to death. This nose 👃 ability is what makes her sensitive to what's happening with me hormonally and emotionally. Not only can she be left alone but Chihuahuas are the longest living breed so she'll be around for possibly twenty years to alert, comfort and protect me. Hope this helps. PS, yes, she can bark but isn't a barker if you know what I mean. Actually, she's quite quiet for a dog, but definitely smelly, ha ha.

I want my first dog about Jan 2021 for my birthday.... it will be my first house dog. .. any suggestions? I need a low or medium energy dog because sometimes I have issues with mobility. I’d suggest a girl toy poodle train her to go on puppy pads inside a litter box or pet playpen. This way she can go potty if you can’t go outside. I trained my girl like that and when I had to run errands for my dad I didn’t have to worry about him taking her out to go potty or even having to open the door for her because he was very unsteady on his feet.

Any dog can be left alone for a few hours. I have a clingy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and can leave her home 3-4 hours at a time. She is kennel trained so she stays in there when we are gone. On a rare occasion we have left her 6-7 hours. When they are puppies they don’t like to be left alone, but we still went to church once a week. She loves to go with us in the car too. Some dogs can be destructive, but most can adapt to your lifestyle. Certain breeds wouldn’t do well if you work all day every day.

No dog should be left alone for more than a few hours. Not fair to any breed of dog. When we work (e.g. 8 or more hours) they should be place in a "daycare" where they are taken out to play and are walked)...e.g. a Pet Smart that has daycare). Not good to make a dog have to "hold it" for "too many hours" unless it's become habit. My Pug now 5 for the first 5 years "needed" 4 walks a day. (morning, afternoon, after dinner and before bedtime). Now he rarely needs the "before bedtime walk". Can hold it for about 12 hours. Been doing that all year . And I wouldn't have if he still required his 4th walk of the day. I'm actually suprised he can hold his urges that long...we can't. :) But really it's simply not fair I think to leave any dog alone for 8 plus hours a day. Even if they are well behaved. And wont end up damaging our home in anger or boredom. I've always had some one home during the day or have been working from home. We MUST devote time to them. Expect that we can't suddenly decide to go out for 10 hours any more..I have never been away from my dog (3rd dog) for more than 3-4 hours).

People should NOT buy dogs. There are millions of dogs in shelters that would make wonderful pets, including pure breed dogs. If those dogs are not adopted, they are killed. Save a life. Adopt, don’t shop.

Adopt or shop. One dogs life does not matter less than the other. Plus shelters are way too strict. Also I rather buy from a breeder than a shelter. My current dog has high anxiety due to having multiple owners and cannot eat without someone being around him. I refuse to buy a dog without knowing it's history.

I would make sure my new family member came from someone who cares about and cares for the dogs they breed. Unfortunately, there are still too many puppy mills out there who are only in it to make a buck. Finally, in defense of our mostly forgotten shelter dogs, I have had dogs from reputable breeders who were terrified of their own shadows and one that will only eat out of 1 bowl and if you try to give him food any other way, he’d starve himself until he got his bowl back. They all have their little personalities, just like we do, but that doesn’t make them less worthy of our love and a forever home.

This shelter refused to give me a dog because my dog is big and I wanted a small dog. Then another one refused be side my yard was not big enough. Tf? Do you want to adopt out a dog or being greedy? So I skip the shelter and go to breeder. If shelters are that picky I'm not jumping hurdles for a dog that needs home visits and more. It's a dog not a human being!

Ah, just a moment people before you rush into judgement here, define the word PACK. Who makes up the pack? A pack of identical dogs, a pack of different breeds, a pack of variously aged dogs? The fact is that some dog breeds can be left alone to entertain themselves while other breeds can not, just like some humans are content contemplatives craving solitude while other humans are party animals. There's variety in nature you know. In my pack it's me and my therapy dog and she doesn't wine or bark or destroy when I go out without her.

@@janealan2142 Animals can learn to survive is all sorts of situations - elephants locked in cages, fish in round bowls, its not about what they learn to live with - it's about what nature intended for them. Yes some dogs live more independently from their packs (I have Chows that do this, guarding rooms alone from choice) BUT the pack is always still there. and they will often choose times to be together. I would never EVER leave a dog alone, particularly a loyal therapy dog who lives their life serving me.
