The "embarrased" situation is really common. One of my Spanish students tried to say that she was embarrased because the priest in her church asked her to give an speech, so when she was in front of the big crowd she said "Estoy embarazada por el pastor", basically she said "I'm pregnant because of the priest".

The Italian one is very wrong. "toilet water" would be a direct translation of "eau de toilette", a type of perfume. It's always called in French to avoid misunderstandings. Tonic water was never misunderstood as anything else. However, "water" in English is used in Italy to refer to the toilet bowl (from Water Closet), this is what might have confused the list maker.
@NellieKAdaba7 жыл бұрын
True
@landivarcarlos4 жыл бұрын
The same in spanish! The word "water" has been even accepted on the dictionary as "wáter" (with the stress on the 'a'), meaning toilet. So, if you say "usar el wáter" in spanish, it means "use the toilet".

Here's an epic one: The Honda Jazz was originally called Honda Fitta. What they didn't realize until after they had made all the ads and PR, was that "fitta" is slang for pussy in Sweden. And along with slogans like "Small on the outside, big on the inside" or "Fitta is a daily pleasure"... it became pretty expensive.

Here are a few I found: Puffs - Their name in German was the slang term for a brothel (in England, it's a derogatory term for a homosexual man). Clairol - Introduced the Mist Stick in Germany...but "mist" means "manure." (The same thing happened to Irish Mist, a whiskey brand...but Rolls Royce changed the name of its Silver Mist model to Silver Shadow before they introduced it to Germany.) Gerber - When marketing their baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the USA, with the baby on the label. What they didn't realize was that in many places on the continent, people can't read, so products there are labeled with pictures of what's inside the package! Colgate - Tried marketing a new toothpaste called Cue in France...but that was also the name of a famous French porn magazine. Coors - Translated their slogan "Turn it loose" into Spanish, but it ended up as "Suffer from diarrhea." (Must have been a *very loose* translation!) Hunt-Wesson - In marketing their "Big John" line of foods to French-speaking areas of Canada, they changed the name to "Gros Jos," only to later find that "gros jos" means "big breasts." ...And finally, it's not always American companies that get it wrong. Electrolux used an ad in the USA that said "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux." Interesting to note that it never really hurt sales; it was mainly good for a laugh with the younger generation. The moral: Do your research, and hire a translator for your target market!

Three others I'd like to mention are Irish Mist, Coca-Cola and Toyota. Each had their own problems. Irish Mist decided not to translate their brand name when beginning marketing in Germany, not realizing that "Mist" is also German for "crap" Coca-Cola managed to mis-translate their slogan, "Coke adds life" in Japanese to become "Coke raises your ancestors from the dead" And Toyota didn't think about the ramifications of releasing their MR2 range of cars in France - seemingly unaware of the pronunciation of those characters in French. In case you're wondering, it ends up sounding like "Merde", the French word for "shit"
@Cerg19986 жыл бұрын
In Russia there were actually at least 2 situations like that, when instant noodles brand "Dosirak" and baby food brand "Blèdina" entered the market. The 1st one sounded similar to "dosirat' '' which means something like "to finish shitting" or "continue to shit after a break" and "bledina" basically sounds as a form of a word "blyad' " which is "whore".

So yes, It is really easy to f up in spanish translations. Here they only touched Mexico and Spain, but if you look beyond that each Spanish speaking country has its own things (hell, they even translated books from a version of the language to the other because many words and expressions mean different things or sometimes the later do not even exist). People should look at the meaning of what they are translating before just doing the equivalent of going to google translate.
