Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however, I think a lot of us would rate our lists based on the fact that we are looking back and we have a full scope of where this series goes. I'll keep it general so nothing is spoiled but more than a few episodes (and some you probably aren't thinking of) are addressed later in the series and the events of what you saw here in season three have significant ramifications down the line.

If anything, I would say that having seen it all it makes me devalue earlier episodes because I know they are just prologues to larger stories that play out over seasons, and in some cases series. I don't tend to value early episodes that matter to the later stuff higher because I know how important they are, I grade them on a curve based on where they fit into a particular arc.

@@fakecubed this is how i feel about Yesterday's Enterprise. It's a fine episode but knowing everything I know it's a stepping stone. But I would also say that it gets a higher rating (as OP pointed out) because of what happens. I was not a huge Tasha Yar fan at all in the beginning and didn't really care that she came back.

For me the exact rankings don't matter. I consider the S-tier episodes to be more or less interchangeable. I have my favourites, but favourite and best are sort of different conversations. It's really the overall ranking of the season and eventually the series that's important to me.

I know which two episodes I go and watch just randomly from this season, outside of any sort of marathon, so I call those my top two (The Defector and Yesterday's Enterprise). But the other S-tier episodes are all pretty much at the same level for me tied for third.

Hard to make a top 10 list for this season, but I will say that the two episodes from this season I will think of and just go and rewatch randomly outside of any TNG marathon are The Defector and Yesterday's Enterprise. My top ten... and what I love about your reactions is that this list is TOTALLY different than it was before your reactions... but rewatching with your comments made me reconsider some episodes I'd forgotten or dismissed ("The Defector"). Thanks! 1 - Yesterday's Enterprise (also top three all time TNG and top five all time ALL Trek) 2 - Sarek 3 - The Offspring 4 - The Defector (James Sloyan as Jarok gets my Trek Emmy for Best Guest Appearance this season, and there were so many great ones. The scene that I LOVE is the one you excerpted at 33:20: where Jarok is standing there realizing that he's been played. The capper on just a brilliant, brilliant performance.) 5 - The Most Toys 6 - Sins of the Father 7 - Hollow Pursuits 8 - Who Watches the Watchers 9 - The Survivors 10 - Deja Q Re "The Best of Both Worlds Part One" - I don't rank it that highly as a single episode but paired with part two, I consider BOTH PARTS TOGETHER one of my top five TNG all time. It is almost impossible for me to consider the two parts separately, but as a single episode, I hated that Part One left me hanging SO MUCH that I can't rank it higher, hahahaha. Re "The Price" - what ruined it for me was Ral, who just was singularly creepy and unappealing from the get go, and that Deanna falls for him really made me question her as a character. He and Vash in "Captain's Holiday" are my least favorite guest characters AND guest actors in season three. The way you feel about Dr. Stubbs is how I feel about both of them. Sorry.

A few people took the Ron Moore route after season 3 and went on to become long term writers and sometimes showrunners. Michael Pillar, the new show runner brought in a policy of accepting any script that's sent in, most were crap, but they had people hired reading them day in day out and finding the good ones and then they'd get on a freelance thing sometimes leading to full staff jobs.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it: The Best of Both Worlds is overrated. It's definitely top 10 and definitely a great episode, but it's not a 9.7, not even close. Fans are grading it that high for meta reasons, not on the strength of the episode itself. That said, I think Yesterday's Enterprise is worthy of the 9.2, and frankly I think there should be more episodes that break into the 9.x level this season. But overall, the way Star Trek fans rate episodes is kind of insane, after all these years. I think the Babylon 5 community (as a reasonably-comparable example) is more realistic in its IMDb ratings. Star Trek fans have been at this for much too long and are prone to hive-mind thinking.
@MrDeathpilot

@@fakecubed Just FYI: These IMDb stats are from a color-coded chart that was released shortly after Picard Season 1. It may not reflect current ratings, but I've found that any discrepancies from the current ratings are USUALLY only within a + or - .2 margin of error. The current rating for "Best of Both Worlds" is now 9.3 and "Yesterday's Enterprise" is still 9.2 ...so there is some merit in your opinion.

You raise a good point; it's really not fair to expect you to assess "The Best of Both Worlds" before you've seen the second half. You've seen it by now, so I guess it's safe to say that some people think the conclusion falls a bit flat. I don't agree with that. Taken as a whole, "The Best of Both Worlds" is an excellent episode by any objective measure. That's part of the reason I love it, but it also resonates with me for personal reasons. I don't agree with all your rankings, but I understand where you're coming from. The only one I would push back against (slightly) is "The Price." I like the wormhole plotline, but Ral is such a sleazy, slimy character that his scenes are hard to watch, although I do like seeing him get his comeuppance in the end. Interesting trivia about "The Defector": the scene from Henry V at the beginning is so thematically relevant that you might assume it was intended to be there from the beginning. It was not. Originally, the episode was supposed to open with a Sherlock Holmes scene on the holodeck. When they couldn't do that for legal reasons, Michael Piller asked resident Shakespeare expert Patrick Stewart to come up with an alternate scene. I'm so excited for you to see Season 4!

Nice discussion and interesting list, thank you for that :) Some observations: Alex, so far, seems to be very into mostly character-driven episodes - especially when featuring his favourites (duh!). Also, it came to me that Alex is very quick to develop a sense of loyalty to these characters - and I have a feeling most of them would get away with a ton of shit without invoking a change in attitude about them for Alex. For Josh, it feels more like he's heavily into themes and messaging episodes, which - in the case of this list - would boil down to "if only we could treat each other better" for his top 3. I think that's something we can all agree with, for sure. For me, personally, I tend to prefer less overt and less on-the-nose moralizing from my entertainment - but one could argue that the entirety of old Trek is centred around altruism and utilitarian philosophy, which is probably the main reason I love old Trek so much (and despise most of new Trek). With that said, I do think that early Trek lacks some subtlety and nuance when it comes to these themes - but that will evolve in later TNG and beyond. To the point where the whole altruism part sometimes gets lost, which was a mistake in my opinion, but that's a discussion for a later date. As for Deja Q not making the top-10 for many, that was a little surprising to me. I can only say that Deja Q and The Most Toys would both feature on my top-10 list - and Yesterday's Enterprise and Best of Both Worlds likely wouldn't make the top-3 - though they would definitely be in the top-10. The Enemy, The Bonding and The Offspring, all being particularly on-the-nose in terms of messaging and not-very-subtle emotional manipulation wouldn't be there, though. The Defector, however, would probably make it - though not very high on the list. As for "if we could all treat each other better" - I find it surprising that you guys weren't a little touched when an omnipotent and excessively spoiled being like Q was basically going to sacrifice himself for the lowly humans. Not just that, but also - once he got his powers back and was celebrating - he still took the time to personally give Data the gift of laughter, which is arguably the single most unique thing about humans, and a gift that Data will always treasure dearly. To me, for someone like Q - who never spent even a fraction of a second considering the needs and desires of mortals to basically redeem himself like that, is one of the most impactful moments in Trek. Not least because they don't change Q or make him any less abrasive or offensive. He gets to be considerate and kind for just that moment - and even the inevitable moral lesson sum-up by Picard is quite measured, unlike some of the other episodes mentioned here. Oh well, to each his own. Looking forward to more content from you guys!

Not a patron member but I’m just don’t enjoy rewatching The Bonding. It really exhibits Ronald D. Moore’s writing talent, but it’s about 2 characters I’ve never seen before and feel no attachment to (although it’s probably the best example of how one could write such characters). I feel like it would’ve hit infinitely harder had this been the way they had written off a main cast member or even a recurring one. Like Tasha deserved a send off with at least this much depth. I mean this is a season where the issue with Top 10 lists is trying to figure out which of so many great choices WON’T get left out.

I don't know. I thought The Bonding was shit the first time I saw it and I still think it's shit. Where my evaluation of episodes has changed, I don't think it changed because of the other series, but more because a lot of time has passed and it is easier to see the flaws. One example is the season 4 Q episode, which I used to like, but now dislike with quite a passion.

@@vohbovohborian28 The acting in The Bonding from the two guest stars was so atrocious I wish I could have that episode burned out of my brain. The stuff with our main cast is good and all, but all told they are on screen for so little of the episode it's impossible for me to like that episode. One or two good scenes that take up a minute of screen time isn't enough to save a 45 minute episode.

@@fakecubed Indeed, and not just that but characters are "involved" with this in ways where it doesn't make sense. Troi does most of the interacting, Worf is mostly absent, then randomly Wesley and Picard show up. What they deliver isn't even bad, it just has little coherence. The idea is good but the episode just doesn't work. I suspect that when they revisit this in a few years they'll probably downgrade their rating of it.

Sins of the Father is the best episode of this season.
@ice-iu3vv
@ice-iu3vv 14 күн бұрын
to summarize, the episodes that we all agree are great (josh, alex, the patron list, and myself) the defector, sarek, sins of the father, best of both worlds, hollow pursuits, the offspring, yesterday's enterprise. so 7 AMAZING episodes. there is only 1 episode where the consensus of all parties is, its garbage. that would be "evolution", the first episode of the season , wit the "most annoying guest star of all-time" according to some. its the worst this season has, and it isnt truly awful. so, another sign of a great season. 6 episodes with a consensus of good to very good (ranked 8-10 or making honorable mentions lists) "ensigns of command", "the survivors", "deja q", "who watches the watchers", "allegiance", "the vengeance factor". (although my own preference could be involved in putting the last one in this group. 5 episodes where the consensus is just ok, not making lists but nobody hating on it too much either "tin man", "the hunted", "menage a troi", "booby trap", "the high ground". so if 11 episodes are between ok and really good according to everyone, with 7 top bangers (alex only gave offspring honorable mention and josh has sins of the father at 9, not top 7) and only 1 universal lemon, that leaves 7 episodes with some difference of opinion, so at least somebody liked all of these 7. ranked higher by josh than any other list we have "the price", josh and alex both liking it more than patrons or myself we have "the bonding", "the enemy", and "matter of perspective". josh and alex both being haters we have "captain's holiday", and "the most toys". so that leaves "transfigurations" which likely belongs in the "ok" group, but i like it a little better than that. best season of the series UP TO this point but 4-6 are not a drop down at all.

For the longest time, Michael Dorn was trying to get a Worf spin-off. I definitely think it would've been better than ENT, or the Jar Jar Abrams and Kurtzman Trek. Star Trek really should always have been moving forward. Doing prequels/remakes was idiotic. And I say that as somebody who actually mostly liked ENT. It still was a mistake to go back in time instead of forward.
