I rarely, if ever know who is playing the part of what character, the credits usually roll by too fast for my crappy eyesight to pick up, even when I had enough eyesight to pick them up. However, never liked the bridge in the book, or bucks, especially the scene in book 7, I mean, if you thought it was bad book 5, the scene and book 7 and let’s just say it reminds me of what the Nazis must’ve done to the Jews, if you can portray that vividly without those two parties, being present, you’ve done your writing well. But, because I have met people who speak like that, hearing it spoken, chills of discussed down my spine, especially with that overly sacred voice, absolutely love it, when McGonigle puts her in her place, or makes the darndest best too.

Nurse Ratchett displayed her true nastiness a bit earlier, when she told Billy she would tell his mother about his naughtiness in the hospital - which does seem a little unethical for a healthcare professional, even if it wasn't ill advised in a mental health context. Biff Tannen's nastiness predated the rape attempt in his bullying from his first appearance; this was just the first time he'd been seen being bad to a female

I would have said Gaston showed his nature earlier with his relentless pursuit of Belle, or using her father to guarantee she marry him, or the mob song when he winds up everybody just to go after the Beast. He doesn’t really care about Belle, he just sees her as a possession that he doesn’t have.
@Kelarys
@Kelarys 2 ай бұрын
I'd say for 99% of the movie, he's not a villain, just an egotistical jerk. The only thing that makes him a villain to me, is having belle's father sent to the asylum. Although he does legitimately think Maurice is crazy. He also legitimately believes the beast is evil. He dies believing he's a hero, he's only a villain because of the information we have that he doesn't

One of the most iconic moments is the one from "Silence of the Lambs" when Hannibal Lecter, in order to escape from his prison cell, clubs a warden to death with that terrifying expression on his face. Until then, we certainly have known Lecter to be somewhat creepy, but also intelligent, polite and, as far as Mrs Starling's case goes, on the right side of the law. This is then the first time that we get to see the monstrosity of his character on full display, which is, of course, shocking.
@Hilz28

Him telling the audience that he's eaten someone's liver didn't clue you in?
@johnjim6793
@johnjim6793 2 ай бұрын
@@Hilz28 Allow me to elaborate. We are "clued in" long before that, actually even before Mr Lecter opens his mouth for the first time. When agent Starling is first introduced to him (and we along with her), she has to walk up to the end of a long hallway. The cells along this hallway are full of yelling, rioting inmates. So naturally we are led to believe that this mysterious "Hannibal the Cannibal" must be of the same breed, only more - the ultimate savage animal. But then we see this tidy little man standing quietly in the middle of his cell. This completely knocks over our expectations which is of course done in order to throw us off balance. This little man must have done something absolutely terrifying that we are unable to put our fingers onto. Hannibal Lecter hasn't even said a word yet and we are already backed against the wall. The whole time the film plays with that stark contrast between a well-mannered intellectual with a high voice who is mentoring a young female agent with her work, and the horrible things that he is supposed to have done. It is meant not to fit together. So when Dr Lecter tells us about how he ate the census-taker's liver and makes that hissing sound, we are certainly intimidated. He is creepy and menacing, but we still do not know what we are up against here. Please note that Lecter tells Starling about eating his victim, but he leaves out the killing part. He is not a physically strong person, so how did he do it? Did he trick his victim? Overpower him? Did someone help? Was it an accident? - The only thing we know is that Lecter is definitely dangerous, but we have no idea from what direction the danger is coming. A simple brute savage wouldn't make us shriek in our seats when he flushes his toilet. There is a difference between hearing about some crime second hand and actually witnessing it. When Dr Lecter tells us that liver-chianti-fava beans anecdote, it still could be all kind of things. Maybe he exaggerates the story because he wants to play his mindgames and put that young woman into her place? Don't forget right before that Agent Starling tried to play the tough woman who told Lecter to take a look at himself. Maybe all this eating liver stuff happened long ago and this polite man is now changed? Maybe this census-taker who we know nothing about was a somewhat evil man himself, who knows? - When we actually SEE Lecter with our own eyes do all this horrible stuff to those two poor wardens who have done nothing wrong to him and we see this empty glance in Lecter's eyes while he is whacking one of his victims into a meshy pulp it is certainly a very different experience for us.

Not only that. It would have been a much better fit than other entries in that list. Ash truly hides and then suddenly reveals his true nature. You never suspected his true agenda. Many of the characters on that list were evil shits from the get go. We just did not know the full extent of their depravity. Nurse Ratchett was a c*nt from the start, so was Percy Wetmore (wet more... get it?), we never figured that Captain Vidal or Biff were decent people. True revelatory moments were offered only by Hal, Ash and Annie Wilkes. AI beats human in hiding their true nature by 2:1. What can we learn from that?

In all fairness, that year's winner Tommy Lee Jones was pretty great in "The Fugitive" as well. Also I could imagine it would have been a strange feeling for some Academy members to cast their vote in favor of someone playing a sadist Nazi monster. Just like you might not bring yourself to voting for someone playing a child rapist. Something that just feels wrong, despite no disrespect meant towards the actor.
@jaylouis8227
@jaylouis8227 2 ай бұрын
@@johnjim6793 Christoph Waltz won the Oscar playing Hans Landa, a sadistic Nazi who hunted and murdered people. And yes, Tommy Lee Jones was good, but he was basically playing himself. He's pretty much the same guy in every movie.
@johnjim6793
@johnjim6793 2 ай бұрын
@@jaylouis8227 That's true, but there is a difference between a cartoonish villain like Hans Landa in a movie that is, like all Tarantino movies, intentionally as much over the top as Landa's ridiculous pipe, and a very, very real person like Amon Göth who has committed very real crimes. It is like comparing the movie "Independence Day" to 9/11. Regarding Tommy Lee Jones, there is certainly some truth to that. Although in Mr Jones' defense I once heard that a great deal of "The Fugitive"'s witty punch lines and one-liners were actually improvised by the actors because there were only fractures of a screenplay when the film was shot. So contrary to many "best supporting actors" who owe at least a part of their fame to the screenwriters, in this case the Samuel Gerard character was indeed in large parts Tommy Lee Jones' creation.
@jaylouis8227
@jaylouis8227 2 ай бұрын
@johnjim6793 I kind of agree with what you're saying, but I don't know that it makes a difference in how they vote. If voters weren't comfortable voting for someone who played a real life monster, why were they comfortable voting to award the man who directed him in that role?
@johnjim6793
@johnjim6793 2 ай бұрын
@@jaylouis8227 Of course I don't know for sure, either. I'm just speculating. Until "Schindler's List", Ralph Fiennes was completely unknown to audiences outside Britain, having starred in only a handful of TV roles and two feature film productions of lesser importance. This sometimes makes it more difficult for an audience to seperate the actor from the character he is impersonating. That's why so many actors are afraid of being type-cast in a typical role. For example, Tom Hulce's career in the movies was over before it had really begun because the audience wouldn't accept him as anything else but as a giggling man-child like Amadeus. So I can only suspect that some Academy members might have felt a subconscious antipathy towards Ralph Fiennes, at least enough of them to make him lose the Oscar to Tommy Lee Jones. This would not have been a problem for Steven Spielberg because he was already a well-known personality in Hollywood, and as a director you are not "glued" to a special character.

In a space odyssey, the military told Hal to lie about the mission and the possible aliens, and it kinda broke his mind. It's why he seesm so shady and odd. Human error is right.

You're not seriously claiming that what HAL did was for self preservation. It's literally in the sequel state that they cannot lie. So they made those actions to follow the guidelines they were secretly given.

I thought Nurse Ratched loved control. She relished the ability to make or break these men’s lives. What made her a villain is she always chose to break them. IMO

The guy who played Percy in Shawshank also played a rapist in A Time to Kill. I only associate him as a nasty, villainous human being now, unfortunately. He plays the roles well.

Disagree about Ratchet. She's clearly affected by Billy's death but at the same time is trying to keep violence from breaking out. Your argument matters it seem as if Ratched purposefully drove Billy to His act. Louise Fletcher gives a more nuanced performance then you give her credit for. If Ratched didn't care for her patients she wouldn't have returned to the job after being assaulted.

I would say Hans landa’s intro scene, they describe him as a killer but when he finally has the Jew family murder showed his true brutality. However his cruelty showed when he spared the family member that escaped just so she can be tormented by her passed.

HAL 9000 is the most scariest villain ever. He doesn’t scream, yell, or even gloat. He has ZERO emotions and that is why he’s the most terrifying killer in movie history.

Percy was immature, stupid, and mean, but I'm not sure he disserved the fate he got. In the book it is pointed out that 'Wild Bill' Wharton was very young, only 19, and his sentence would likely be commuted. There was no way Percy would have kept his mouth shut, no matter what threats the others made. And they were very likely empty in any case. And so he had to be made incapable of telling anything that happened. I think the real goal, for John, was to kill Wild Bill. Percy's incapacitation was just a bonus. Also, HAL was not evil. Killing the crew was not his "true colors" it was a result of his conflicting orders. In the book, it's made clear that shutting HAL down ripped out David's heart. And at the End of 2010 The being David had become chose to save HAL before the ship was destroyed. Interesting question: Could an AI like HAL be downloaded onto a device and transferred to a new machine? They say in the movie that there is a twin, another HAL 9000 unit on Earth. Would the Discovery HAL and the Earth HAL have once been one being, that was copied and loaded into anther machine?

Percy absolutely deserved his fate. He was only about himself, rising in the ranks of the prison system on the backs of his family members who were high in the government system. He didn’t care about following protocol to keep the inmates calm, as he had been instructed numerous times. He was an immature, substandard employee, with a chip on his shoulder, that Paul was stuck having to deal with. He was treated accordingly by his fellow guards, because he couldn’t be trusted and was downright evil to the inmates. Look what he did to Del.

I think they mean the scene Diana’s death in the movie wasn’t quite based on fact she did die but it was cause a wall collapsed and she got the blame but the movie shows us what very likely would have happened had she realised the structure wasn’t stable and told them that she’d be dead either way for what would be considered ‘’talking back’’

WHOA ! Wait a minute !! If you'll take the time to watch the movie " 2010 : The Year We Make Contact " you'll see Dr. Chandra explain to Heywood Floyd that Hal 9000 was essentially brainwashed into putting the mission first over the lives of the crew . I don't want to get too wound up on a movie , I just want to show a little compassion towards Hal ... Artificial Intelligence is only as worthy as the humans who create it . It was only in the last few months that ChatGPT was asked to create a picture of Vikings and we got Oriental-looking people ? And black Nazi's ? What could go wrong , eh ? Well , there you go ; human prejudice / bias on full display .
