@@_marius.19_ I think the E2s that were tried for passenger trains were first batch and I'm told Thomas was based on the 2nd batch with extended tanks. For whatever reason, except on Sodor (I know it's just a story, btw), they didn't feel the need to try the 2nd batch on passenger trains. TTTE=my childhood. And it's worse than dead now, it's ruined. Thanks to AEG. Tanks for the memories, TTTE proper.

The Dunalastair class is extinct in the UK, but not completely, as in Belgium there is a locomotive of the type 18 class preserved, which was a development of the type 17 of the same railway. That type 17 in itself was a copy of the Dunalastair II class. Apart from the cab that looks different on the class 18 everything else looks exactly like a Dunalastair, they even used the same prussian blue color, altough it is now painted in the standard drab brown of the belgian state railways were it ran in later, before the merging of the Belgian state railways and the Nord into NMBS, when it changed into green. The locomotive is on static display in the new Train World in Schaarbeek (Brussels) and it's not likely to run in the future (as is the case with GNoSR and NBR 4-4-0's that are preserved)

He was based on the 2nd batch in the illustrations, but in some illustrations, he's too short in length due to illustrator error. The short illustrations gave birth to his TV self. His TV model's got the dip in the front of the running board, though. The 6 wheels and those 2 circles by the cab remind me of Thomas, too.

I think what BR did was scandalous, offing some perfectly good steam loco's in the rush to "dieselisation". Mongrels I reckon...some of them had done less than 10 years service. Dai Woodham was a saint, putting the loco's to one side while he scrapped the more lucrative wagon stock, long enough for preservation societies to come into being and rescue over 200 of the unfortunates. Thanks to him the UK now has enough loco's to see steam well into the future...
@martinsims1273
@martinsims1273 4 жыл бұрын
The policy makers in BR weren't interested in the sensible option (which was to make the best use of the financial capital, and use the steam loco stock for it's full practical life span, until it was worn out, thus getting the best long term, proper financial value out of them, which as an (incidental, and nice) offshoot would have seen Britain still with steam traction for many more years. No, they were besotted with their new "fashion statement" "modern image", and the money they had to spend on it/throw away, was not theirs, i.e; it was public money raised from taxes, so that it did not hurt their own pockets to squander it. No proper, right thinking business would spend bucket loads of money on building new equipment (as BR did with the BR standard steam loco fleet), only to then scrap it all wastefully, within a very few short years of being built new. And they weren't held accountable (not to the public) for their grossly squandering, wasteful actions. Was it ever so with government officials, who hide behind none accountability in beaurocratic departments?
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
@@martinsims1273 Well one can argue they saved money because maintaining, cleaning, and starting up steam locos was a big drag on labour. Also only 2/3 the number of diesel and electric locos could do the same job. But where they really went wrong was wasting money on producing the BR standards in the first place. It was a disputed project and somewhat of a vanity exercise for Riddles & Co. It would have been possible to continue with the designs of the 30s and 40s till other forms of traction took over in the 50s and 60s. Pretty much what happened in the USA for example.

Correct. During WW2 they replaced the Z class at Hither Green. Other classes used on banking duties between Exeter St Davids and Exeter Central were the E1R 062T and W 264T. I never saw the E1R class. In addition the M7 044 and Standard Class 262 also performed this role as required, occasionally an ex GWR 060 pannier tank. Into dieselisation, the Meldon Quarry stone trains has a Hymec or Warship class loco at the head, and were banked by a baby Warship in the rear.

All good candidates for replica building, Pendennis, but might I put in a plea for some of the long gone early locos of the 1840s or 50s, like the 'Jenny Lind', 'Sharpie', and 'Crampton' types. They would be easy enough to reconstruct, being not much larger than a modern 0-6-0, and would look marvellous on preserved railways, especially if suitable carriages were built to go with them. Anyway, thanks for an interesting video!

And it's a crying shame that Beyer Peacock's very successful & reliable Beyer Garratt design was hobbled and half ruined by the blinkered management (of the time) on the LMS, insisting on their version being fitted with standard Midland axle boxes with pathetically insufficient bearing surface areas, so crippling them out on many occasions, and ruining an otherwise good design with unreliability. They should have let Beyer Peacock stick to their own, tried and tested, well proven, reliable design.

Thank crhsit no E2s were saved, they were absolutely hateful little machines when in traffic. Rough riding, badly laid out, under powered and detested by all those who had to work with them. If it wasn't for the rev Awdry they would have faded in to obscurity long ago and be treated with the same contempt as the other great failures of the steam era like the LSWR "paddle boxes"! =P In other news, there is very nearly a Dunalstair in perservation. 828 at the Strathspey Railway has the same boiler, cab, controls, cyinders, tender and many other parts the same as one. The only real difference being the frames and wheels.

In theory, yes, but the guy behind it doesn't seem to be getting much support, seeing as so many people seem intent on exploiting and in some cases exaggerating the faults of those engines. He's building a 5-inch E2 in the meantime, but until someone stops shooting them down and actually starts being constructive with this project of his, i.e. offering advice on how to set up a locomotive society or where would be a suitable place to build a full-size one, it's unlikely that he'll be able to even begin. But oh well, hope springs eternal.

A grat pity, but perhaps another resurrection job! The 1 in 37 is still there, but I don't know if any ballast trains still go out of Meldon Quarry. That was a sight to witness going up to Exeter Central. Thanks for your reply.

I saw on the web that there is society planning to build the newest member of LBSCR E2 class 0-6-0 tank engine number 110, except he will have a bigger coal bunker.

Where was the GWR Saint class? Also the replica 4709 2-8-0 is hardly started, perhaps the author was indeed thinking of the replica Saint "Lady of Legend" when he referred to a GWR new build bearing completion?

Well done. I think the North British Reid Atlantic would have been a better choice but hey ho' The GWR Great Bear ( UK's first Pacific ) also worth a mention. Enjoyed it none the less

You forgot the Hughes Dreadnought! A truly appalling engine when it first came out, sluggish and extremely heavy on coal. But the rebuilt version, and 50 others that were built to a similar plan to the rebuilt version, proved themselves to be strong and reliable engines, if a touch tricky to keep completely steam tight and still a bit heavy on coal. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway society are raising money for a new build Hughes Dreadnought.

If No 6000, King George V achieved 1, 910,424 miles in traffic as the flagship GWR steam engine, then I reckon that the 1,656,564 miles achieved by the highest mileage 4700 class member is pretty good and does not really merit the words "not great". This is not a criticism, just an observation as some of these engines lasted almost to the very last year of steam- so they must have been very useful despite being a very small class.

Don’t get this the wrong way but E2s were rubbish steam engines. To long of a wheelbase, very inefficient and relatively slow.
