GLaDOS mentions black mesa, and some kind of magical boat is referenced in half-life and seen in portal. Other than that, there is no further proof that they will merge the series. Portal 2 takes place way after Cave Johnson died, somewhere around 1980, while Black Mesa was founded in 1950. Aperture Science in portal 2 doesn't seem to have been affected by the events of Half-Life, and as such, I don't see a reason for them to merge the series, even if they are in the same universe. Aperture science must have been left hidden underground, with little to no interaction with the outside world, after GLaDOS killed all the staff.

+Cory Baxter Kind of an unrelated question, but I need help I'm unable to get proper widescreen to work in Half-Life Goldsrc. The default has two thick black bars on each side. There is a widescreen option, but it cuts off top and bottom portions of the FOV. When I try playing it in Software mode, it's more pixelated and although it's in widescreen and doesn't mess up the FOV, it basically stretches everything to make it widescreen which creates this strange effect whenever I look around. Any advice? I got it off of Steam if you're wondering.

If what you mean is you want to start playing HL1, I'd recommend get Black Mesa instead. It is a total third-party remake of HL1 using HL2 graphics and physics. It really worth it. And don't forget Portal 1 and Portal 2 too. They are in the same universe as Half-Life and connected in some way

loomman529 aperture Science is the rivaling company of Black Mesa. The two were rivals because they were both interested in developing methods for teleportation. Unlike Black Mesa, Aperture science was actually successful because they created The Borealis, a big ship capable of long ranged teleportation. No one knows where it is though, because it basically left Aperture Science, taking half of the dry-dock it was in, with it. In half life 2 episode 1 or 2, I can't remember, Isaac, the main scientist guy, discovers footage of the Borealis, basically confirming its existence. That's pretty the defining link between the two games

As far as I know, no. It wasn't developed by valve, so I wouldn't really count it as Canon, but the mod does uitilize unused assets from a beta version of Portal 2. Mel was initially planned to be in the coop mode along with Chell, but both were eventually replaced with Atlas and Peabody
