The Waterloo film is amazing and gives a general sense of the battle with a lot of liberties. On this point, it suggested that at least a few of the squares were broken for dramatic effect (or to condense for the sake of the film events elsewhere in the battle, where allied battalions in open formation were destroyed by cavalry). Some of the squares in the real battle at this point were severely reduced by artillery fire, but none were broken, least of all by Ney's charge.

In a way it's not entirely weird that they did that tho. In early antiquity 300-1 BC it's was considered (at least by the Romans) very shameful for the enemy about to be besieged not at least try to contest the ground before the city walls before the city was fully invested. Ancient warfare had alot of posturing involved so having a fight over worthless ground just to prove a point was a important element. So wrong people, wrong time period but the general idea of that battle scene isn't completely ridiculous.

the Scottish cavalrymen achieved success because they achieved their main goal, which was to stop the attack of Napoleon's infantry, in addition, after destroying several battalions, the Scots charged too far, cutting down some of the French gunners, so in my opinion, despite the high losses, the charge achieved a great success, looking at how the battle unfolded.

On Troy: despite being pretty much entirely made up, as is based on the _Iliad_ as (afaik) the only source for this war, a so not really reliable, the movie at least shows one thing done right, and something that we very rarelly get, even in "proper" historical movies: the archers _do not stop shooting_ . Quite often we see one or two volleys, them off to dramatic hand to hand. But here, the archers keep raining hell on the enemy, seemingly untill they run out arrows. _That_ is a proper archer army!

No, you're wrong , BIG TIME. (1) ancient Troy was NOT renowned for some corps of elite archers (2) ancient arrows did NOT have homing devices or devastator warheads (3) arrow hits do NOT knock men flying (let alone, in the wrong direction relative to the arrow's trajectory!). They are mostly just very annoying. (4) arrows don't have any lethal velocity after travelling several hundred feet (5) archers did NOT shoot over large deep formations of their own troops to hit an enemy very close to said own side's troops - a prescription for blue-on-blue !! (6) archers who keep on shooting indefinitely are NOT a case of "one thing done right," rather, they are a recipe for friendly fire, and quivers rarely hold more than about ten arrows (7) archers gain NOTHING by frequently exchanging ranks - musketeer style! - like they do on the battlements in "Troy." Their reloading takes about 3 seconds, so no need to imitate musketeers who need about 15 seconds.
@jlvfr
@jlvfr Жыл бұрын
@@TomasFunes-rt8rd I never claimed any of those things. We don't even know _what_ Troy had. My point was that we finally see archers shooting non-stop, rather than the stupid "1 salvo then hero charge" we usually get.

No 8, this sums the fighting spirit of most men in uniform, even when the bastard who gave the order wins. This scene capture brotherhood beautifully. Number 5 again shows a failing, that is how the horses were trained ho to use all four hooves against attackers on the ground. this became the basis for dressage. If any city or state had to acknowledge its heroes, then Maine with the 24th would have to be it.

Tony Bennett was a combat soldier in World War 2 and fought through France all the way to Germanyuntil the war came to an end. He said, "Anyone who has a romantic about war has never been in one. Alvin York did the impossible and won the MOH. Problem was he did not want to go in the Army because he knew he wasn't cut for it because he relinquished his wild life and become a born again Christian. After his time in the service he became and remained an alcoholic all his life because of his war experiences. I was in the Army and I was in Operation Desert Storm. 80% of soldiers normally are not put into combat. However all soldiers receive basic infantry training and if need be they will be called into battle. I asked one guy who was in Afghanistan if it's true they go out on those missions. He said, "Every day." I asked him if he ever got shot at and he said, "Every day." 2:15 David and Goliath During WW2 the Russian army did not have to recruit. The Germans did that for them. Germans would wipe out a town of civilians and Russia had more than enough of volunteers. 6:00 When the Germans invaded Russia, they thought it was going to be a piece of cake like in Poland and in Europe. After two weeks the German Generals realized they had a serious problem, because will stay and fight. Russia had completely outdated planes when the war started so thought up a new tactic. A Russian pilot would aim his plane at an oncoming German plane and bale out 10 seconds before impact. At Stalingrad every able person, young, old, man, woman, child was taking part in the battle. 21:50 The days of Calvary charges came to an end because of the machine gun. 25:00 During the Civil War Blacks were signing up to fight in the war and fight they did. For some reason or another in those days it was necessary to hold the flag up. Even though the one holding it was the prime target. In the War for Independence, one third of the people was on the side of colonists. One third was on the side of the King. And one side said, "Just let us know who wins and we'll take it from there." 35:00 When the battle of Waterloo was lost Napoleon did say the whole thing was his fault.

Number 1o might have been not real in the war, but it was used for symbolic purposes i guess, Number 9, probably only happened at the start of the Russian counterattack by the river, even the Russian could not waste soldiers like that in that battle but the shooting of retreating soldiers was real then by both sides. Even the Orc Commander at 8:55 has to be shocked about the foolishness of the attack, that sad biter song is heart breaking. Number 7, jeez Jon Snow had a death wish, knew some important personal things for someone immortal who could do no wrong but not how to lead an army. Number 6, Narnia the Spanish or Portuguese style troops vs the Zoo animals, Only Narnia dared pulled that off, control of the battlefield helps. Number 5 is epic, pretty much captures the way cavalry fought back then. NBumber 4 from The Warhorse is symbolic clearly, but there were at first in the Western Front some successful attempts to use cavalry in scouting and direct attacks, the Germans must have been more shocked to see cavalry do a direct attack than anything else but then again the surprise element was there at first but at 23:13 it was horrifying to see the change. Number 3, Glory well that attack went well, the fact that Union could not capture Fort Wagner until they captured the city and it surrendered was even more tragic for their forces. Mel Gibson in the Patriot as Number 2 was not historically accurate but this battle scene is just epic so we forgive him for that. At least Number 1, Waterloo is great and historically accurate at least.

For a country without the manpower of China or India, the russians sure did rely on quantity over quality and you could argue that it was a good strategy since they won and that they had a large population compared to their enemies, but you cannot argue that using bodies to block for bullets has never been a good idea, I've heard of documentaries talking about this but was it did red army soldiers really rush into machine gun fire like in the clip? Because it looked like the soviets were just executing death row criminals and wasting the German bullets with their lives.

Troy: Archers could fire 1 per 2-3 seconds, and they were not doing that. They needed no exchange of places. Ajax was famous for his huge 7 layer bronze trimmed shield not a hammer. Otherwise a good film. War horse, though poetic, defenders always aimed at horses, not the riders, to stop a charge. The Patriot: Good film, poor history. Ney at Waterloo is of course the biggest, most spectacular and historically truest (though the defending guns had their wheels removed at need to stop them being dragged off).

In War Horse, I always wondered why the Germans would set up a line of machine gun pits facing their own campground
@joescott7763
@joescott7763 Ай бұрын
The camp was far behind the lines. The machine guns stand very close to each other, so perhaps they are positioned in the wood (sun protected) for training purposes. Learning how to handle loading inhibitions etc. before the unit go to the front line. I wondered more, where the fuck are the camp guards? Even if the camp is far behind the lines, always use camp guards. In war times, not every visitor of your camp is a friend, i guess.

Shame they never get the actual fighting right. Solid shot (any war up to the mid-19th century) doesn't create nice explosions. And every blow by the British cavalry in the War Horse scene is shown as a slash - but the 1908 pattern cavalry sword was a thrust-only weapon. It has been said to be "best described as a one-handed lance".

The charge in Kingdom of Heaven is most unrealistic because a few Crusader knights on horse could kill hundreds of Muslims due to their armor and training as evidenced in all the battles from 1000 AD to 1400 AD.

But in the end John Snow won the battle of the bastards with help of Peter Balish. The Knights of the Green Valley arrived just in time to turn the battle. Of course Snow did not expect that but it was in his favour. But of course this was an attack without any perspective of win. It was just desperate.

I doubt if it was above 50 or 60 at most, and there was no separation of sailors and soldiers. The ships were run onto the beach,, pulled out of reach of the tide, and everyone became a soldier.

@@jameshorn270 of course 50k people couldn’t survive on that beach for a month. Not years! Only by modern times, like napoleonic wars any country could raise and support such number of soldiers! But still it’s a beautiful story.
