Oh man. 2 obscure kickstarters in Spirit of the Rice paddy and Red outpost. Both are in my gaming group. Kickstarters done right. Pure, simple but still well produced and really well thought outut.

Any thoughts on how how the farming games from 1979 ("The Farming Game" or "Profit Farming") stack up to your list? Caverna / agricola ******** Viticulture ******* Happy Pigs Bohnanza Scoville Fields of Green / Among the Stars Hallertau Red Outpost Takenoko Spirits of the Rice Paddy BTW, on the Last Archive podcast, they talk about how the Farming Game was invented.. great episode!

Agricola and Fields of Arle but I immediately knew that the pig game will be on the list and I predicted the No. 1 correctly as well 😁

Viticulture, At the Gates of Loyang and Agricola: All Creatures Big & Small for me. Could be Agricola and Fields of Arle as well, but I need to play them more to see where they fall. I do love Bohnanza too, though I don't get much of a farming feel from it!
@blacksheep99503 жыл бұрын
Agreed on Fields of Green. I prefer the space theme and asymmetric player powers from AtS, but the engine-building aspect of FoG and the scoring being at the end instead of every round makes it a better game for me.
@TheOldMan-753 жыл бұрын
It's also a much better theme for a lot of non-gamers.

La Granja and Walnut Grove would be on my list.
@c.w.20003 жыл бұрын
@@JesusIsTruthAndWayAndLife I was just looking at buying La Granja since I can get it for under $40. The upcoming 2022 version is a “Deluxe Master Set”, which means it is likely going to cost double the original. I’m not sure if I want to spend that much. Hopefully it does improve the solo mode if needed, but the BGG description doesn’t specifically say that.

Viticulture is overrated. Very little control when it’s all about the cards, since their powers are usually better than any actual working spot. For a quick game I also recommend Harvest, which repurposes Ra’s cool sun value swap mechanism.
@chuckm19613 жыл бұрын
Yes, people who love the game generally know that the cards are imbalanced. Yet they still love the game, imagine that. They have this strange idea that they are having fun.
@Okami313 жыл бұрын
You can enjoy whatever you want to enjoy of course but I don’t recommend it to any one new to it.
@chuckm19613 жыл бұрын
@@Okami31 Right, it certainly makes a great deal of sense that you would not want to give anyone “new to it” a chance to enjoy a game that you do not enjoy. Everyone should demand that all of their board games are perfectly balanced. In case you did not catch it, that was heavy sarcasm.
@Okami313 жыл бұрын
Oh no worries. You were as subtle as a bassoon.
@chuckm19613 жыл бұрын
@@Okami31 Of course most or all of the cards are better than the board spaces. It’s implicit in the game design. And some of the cards are better than others. And some are better than others depending on how you are playing.

Agricola isn't even on the list!!!! It's not only better than caverna, but it is the archetypal farm game.
Is an ofictianato someone who pretends to really know a lot about something?
@tylerbrown97973 жыл бұрын
Just because board game genres can shove what everyone did for life and work before the industrial revolution under the label of "farming" doesn't mean that there isn't/wasn't a massively diverse amount of experiences and themes under the label of farming. It just means under the current world view if there isn't war or money its called farming because we can't conceive of what would be so interesting about something without war or money. I mean, la granja sells itself as a farming game but it has nothing to do with the actual farming part really.
