I used to play baseball in HS and then as an adult I picked up tennis as a weekend sport. I have to say that hitting an absolute rocket of a tennis serve would be more difficult due to the fact that you have different footwork for the backhand or the forehand return which means that you really have to react faster or even be moving before the ball is even struck to be able to hit a clean return
@KaruesellHQ4 жыл бұрын
That’s a really good point. Not only you need to adjust your footwork, but also the grip which makes it even more difficult
@reb3494 жыл бұрын
@@albertcamus5970 I guess if we aren't considering hitting it back cleanly and the criteria is just getting it back and in play then it would indeed be easier to hit the serve cause it would be much easier to bunt back a ball with a rocket than a bat. @@reb349 Good comparison. Have you returned any truly fast serves yet? I can only imagine but I like to belive some of the harder serves are pretty close to standing in a batting box. Baseball is maybe easier to expect when the ball starts to move since you see the batter so clearly. However both tennisballs and baseballs change trajectory right after the point of release (from the pitcher or the opponents raquet). The smaller batt makes baseballs harder to hit with less input from the pitcher but at the same time the tennis ball can change trajectory more severe since it bounces before you can hit the serve. No need to answe with a long text, Just wanted to share my thoughts :)

Never faced more than a high 80s fastball and never faced more than a mid 120s serve, but I’d say the high 80s fastball with movement was much harder to hit. The main reason is that off speed pitches in baseball throw your timing off way more than softer serves do in tennis so timing the fastball is more difficult. A serve with perfect placement on the other hand can be impossible to return, while a pitch has to be somewhere around the strike zone.

The first one was from 2003, not 2005. In 2004 Roddick hit 153 mph at Queens too. This is a pretty good video but it has to be said the actual serve speed on these has more to do with the radar gun used (and the software behind it) than the serve, themselves. Your No. 4 is not a serve-it’s a fault. I would argue it doesn’t belong on this list. To be a serve it has to actually function as a serve. How fast you can smash it into the net is a different contest.
@chucker6253 жыл бұрын
Hitting a Tennis ball vs a Baseball isn't even an argument. The court is 27 x 78. The serve is diagonal and served / returned from behind the OB line but let's just leave the dimensions as they are... That gives you roughly 82.5 feet of travel AFTER a bounce. The bounce itself slows the ball down considerably and your return strike happens when the ball is on an upward plane. You are hitting a round, compressible ball with a LIGHTWEIGHT and FLAT racket that has an impact surface SEVERAL times bigger than than the ball. Not saying it is easy but.... A 90+ MPH fastball is thrown from 60.5 feet (but most pitchers throwing 90+ are over 6 feet tall so the release point is more like 56 feet). The ball does NOT bounce first so it is coming at you on a downward plane (our eyes are better at judging something on than way 'up' than they are at judging something on the way 'down'). You are hitting an incompressible ball (relative to a tennis ball) with a HEAVY and ROUND bat that is roughly the same diameter as the ball being thrown at you. Plus, if you are facing a pitcher that throws 90+, odds are he has a couple other pitches you need to look out for and react to accordingly. Even if you KNOW a fastball is coming, it takes FAR more coordination and skill to hit it flush. But if you want to test the theory, let's have the best tennis players in the world try to hit a 90 mph fastball and the best baseball players in the world try to return a 140 mph serve. I bet you a buck I know who wins.
@KaruesellHQ3 жыл бұрын
I’d love to see that happening! Hopefully one day we get big enough to get some of the top guys to test it out. I appreciate the thoughtfulness on your comment - I’m sure returning a pitch must be incredibly hard!
@chucker6253 жыл бұрын
@@KaruesellHQ I was going to add a big 'however' but it was already long enough... So here it is... HOWEVER... A hitter in baseball needs to properly time ONE swing and gets THREE tries. He gets as much time as he needs between swings and he not required to swing at every offering. A tennis player does not have this luxury. They get ONE chance to return a serve and MUST attempt to play it even if it is not 'in their wheelhouse'. They are two very different sports with very different physical requirements both offering advantages and disadvantages. So, my final thought is this.... A baseball player has a higher chance of returning a serve than a tennis player has at hitting a baseball. BUT... A tennis player will hit a homerun before a baseball player wins a match.
@davidedwards47202 жыл бұрын
But, and it’s a huge but, the baseball is thrown right to the hitter. No need to react to which side it is going to. No need to lunge in that direction. In the video Agassi easily returned a fast serve because it was delivered directly to his strike zone. Similar to a baseball pitch. Although a racquet is bigger than a bat the sweet spot is surprisingly small and an off center hit of a very fast serve will likely just spin the racquet in the player’s hand.
@michaelbarrett272 жыл бұрын
Baseball also has an enforced, highly limited strike zone that is necessarily within the immediate reach of the batter. The batter doesn't have to run down a 90 mph pitch at a highly variable height off a sometimes unpredictable bounce 7+ feet away from the plate... AND then get the ball to land on a strategic spot inside a court smaller than the interior of a baseball diamond... AND then be ready for that ball to come back again and have to run it down again. So... there's that. Also, a 140+ mph serve is STILL traveling pretty damn fast after the bounce-especially on grass. So, there's that, too.

Sampras played his prime in an era where the guns picked the speed up later. A tennis serve reached maximum speed some time before it crosses the net, in Pete's early days they were recording the speed after it crossed the net. So Pete was somewhat slower that those guys, but as big a gulf as it appears on paper. An example, in his playing Goran's fastest serve clocked at 136. Years after when he was retired, a few shoulder surgeries, in an exhibition he hit several serves in the 142-145 range. A bum shoulder 40+ year old Goran clearly hadn't gained speed, it was the ball being clocked at it's fastest point.

Fastest tennis serve doesn't mean shit. Not that Im a professional or anything, but its much easier to return a big flat one compared to hard slider or high bouncing kick. I'll rather return flat one because the opponent gets predictable with flat one and block it back.The more spin, the harder it is.
@avril-_-.3 жыл бұрын
not exactly mate. It's a lot harder to return a serve in less time. even a couple milliseconds can make a huge difference. I agree with you that they are predicitable but if youre playing against a smart opponent theyll just move the flat serve around the service box and maybe hit it down the T instead of out wide, which you can only anticipate right before they actually strike the ball. Spin however will almost always go towards the same direction and will go down the T on one side, and out wide on the other. They're also a lot slower which just creates oppertunity to punish off of. I'm not trynna argue or disprove your point at all just giving my insight. everyone is different and while you might prefer to return a flat ball, I'd prefer to return against someone who hits spin.

Some day we will get a new record serve. And the camera that recorded it, will be the worst possible camera from 60's.

These radar readings should be corrected for the cosine of the angle relationship with the Doppler-shift. In other words, the closer the ball is to the T in the service box the more accurate the reading the more diagonal the serve (i.e., away from the T) the less accurate the reading. Quite simply the more diagonal reading would be slightly higher in mph. For example, Roddick, Raonic, Isner and Dent serve strictly up the T, so no correction. Whereas Groth's serve was along the diagonal and would actually measure higher in mph with the correction. This analysis assumes that the radar guns are located across from each other along the line of the T.

I have been keeping an eye on serve speed for the last 20 years and i can tell you beyond any doubts the correction due to the angle is taken into account, actually sometimes the correction is too generous as i have seen them having higher figures serving out wide than down the tee. Serve speed increased at Wimbledon 2004 by about 5 mph due to speed gun technology.
