Great list, you had two Demy movies on it which is amazing 👏! For me the one you missed The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is my number one. I am humming and singing the main song all the time. Unsure if singing in the rain is a musical but if it is it is on my top 4 on letterbox! Also add Rocky Horror Picture Show and a dash of "The Boyfriend" by Ken Russell and we have a great party.

Hey, DJ and Grace, if you haven't already, check out The Swell Season, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová's band, especially the album Strict Joy, which they released a few years after Once. The song "I Have Loved You Wrong" is a great place to start.

Hi guys! Great show. I love musicals! Some musicals I recommend: "On Moonlight Bay" & it's sequel "By The Light Of The Silvery Moon" (Doris Day), "The Jolson Story" & "Jolson Sings Again" (Larry Parks), "Gypsy" (Natalie Wood), "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" (Robert Morse), & "ABBA: The Movie" (The story is thin by way of what it's supposed to be but the music is fantastic!).

DJ, I think you know by now how much I love my favorite film, "Meet Me in St. Louis," so I was really happy (and a little relieved) when you chose it. But Grace, I thought for sure you would pick "Mary Poppins" (my second favorite film) considering your love for Julie Andrews. Also, my friend Brian has two daughters and loves the song "Children Will Listen." I think it really gets to him, too. Finally, I agree that the second "Mamma Mia" is better than the first. OK, here is my top 10 favorite musicals: 1. Meet Me in St. Louis; 2. Mary Poppins; 3. The Sound of Music; 4. An American in Paris; 5. Easter Parade; 6. The Wizard of Oz; 7. Funny Face; 8. Singin' in the Rain; 9. Holiday Inn; 10. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Now I'm off to see an Abe Lincoln impersonator at the local library (bet you didn't see that coming!).

Very surprised that The Greatest Showman didn't land on a top 10 for this video. And yes Annie is amazing and I almost forgot about it as well.

I love musicals, but even though I enjoy all eras of the genre, I can’t say I have a straightforward top 10 list. Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of my favorite, along with Sweeney Todd, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Phantom of the Opera, The Prince of Egypt, Jesus Christ Superstar, Willy Wonka, Little Shop of Horrors. I’ll even throw in Repo: The Genetic Opera for good measure. I do enjoy older ones as well like Guys and Dolls, Westside Story, The Music Man, The King and I, etc., etc….

Great video loved it! You mentioned Gene Kelly may I suggest his last film which was a flop but has now become a cult classic "Xanadu" from 1980 which also stars Olivia Newton-John (Grease), and Michael Beck (The Warriors). Tons of awesome music from Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra. "A Fantasy, A Musical, A Place Where Dreams Come True".

oooooh, I might also make May a musical month and watch some musicals (among other things). And then make a video, or at least a list, of favorites! Looking forward to the follow up video! I'll definitely leave a comment on that with some thoughts and suggestions on what you guys have on your watchlist 😊 DJ, the reason why people hate the Into The Woods movie is they cut and alter some things that makes the songs and themes (particularly that of parenthood) less impactful and effective. It undermines thee show, thee story, and what we're exploring.... in the woods! (lol) I'd say that's the main reason in addition to some of the casting (ahem, James Corden) and the coloring of it. But I do think you loving the movie will just mean you'd love the original show even more, as it would likely feel enhanced. I feel like you should give the OBC stage performance another chance if not just listen for the fuller story. (But listen to the video because the soundtrack doesn’t include all the dialogue and plot points.) I also think the show is just so funny, which I think is really great to add to complexities/varying facets of being human and as a juxtaposition to the dark fairytales and many characters dying. and the movie is not funny to me. Anyway, I know I've left you at least a couple other comments about it, so if it seems like I’m being pushy it’s only because it is definitely in MY top 10 favorite musicals, too!

A good list although I'm surprised that although there's a Gene Kelly film included there is no Fred Astaire. From the thirties I would recommend Swing Time with Ginger Rogers on Criterion and from the fifties there's Funny Face where he stars opposite Audrey Hepburn.

I love this! And I’m so glad you included Into the Woods. “No One is Alone” gets me every time. 😢 I also love Tick Tick Boom. I share the frustration with no release-I ordered an DVD FYC screener off of eBay just to have it. Since you both like Tick Tick Boom and Sondheim, have you seen the PBS televised version of Sondheim’s Sundays In the Park with George with Mandy Patinkin? It’s referenced in Tick Tick Boom and has similar themes. So good! But not very cinematic, worth a watch though! It’s on KZbin or there is a DVD. Another one I love that no one else does is Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella from 1965, which my mom grew seeing and then I grew up watching.

"The Man who knew too much" could be in this list, considering that Doris Day sings that stupid song every 5 minutes. 😅😅

I'm not a fan of musicals, in general. There are two big musicals among many that I haven't seen: THE SOUND OF MUSIC and MARY POPPINS (I expect the like both). In general, I dislike Broadway-type musicals, like OKLAHOMA, SEVEN BRIDES; etc. however, here are some great ones: SINGIN' IN THE RAIN; WEST SIDE STORY; CABARET; OLIVER!. These great musicals are more plot/story oriented than concentrated on music. I like where the music really serves to help move the plot along, instead of just popping up to sing and dance something almost meaningless to the story. Could not get pass the opening sequence of LA LA LAND, opening the film with singing on the bridge. No story background made me not watch the rest of the film. I have a hard time listing THE WIZARD OF OZ as a "musical" because except for RAINBOW, the other songs don't really add much although they try to be appropriate. I mentioned that I disliked Broadway musicals, yet there are some Broadway filmed production of CATS and SWEENEY TODD are surprisingly favorites. Another surprising thing is that I love ALL Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals, every single one. SURPRISED, so was I! One area that I love that hasn't been touched upon, which can be considered "musicals" are those Rock oriented films: PINK FLOYD'S THE WALL: BOHEMAIN RHAPSODY; WALK THE LINE; CADILLAC RECORDS and so many more.
