WOW. I'm not too familiar with Anne Rice, but to know that she based that character on a daughter she lost to cancer, that's tragic, but makes so much sense. She probably longed to see her daughter grow up, but could only ever have her in her memory as an eternal child. She obviously channeled that into the character's rage at not being able to grow up. Fantastic list and analysis. I must watch your channel more!

@@lizzychrome7630, Louie didn't want to kill humans and saw Lestat (who made him) as evil. In the second book Lestat speaks and defines himself as Louie in character. This ruins the new perspective entirely. What we want is Lestat to be David Bowie, to have no morals and do what he wants and then to hear his perspective in an interview on having to deal with Louie and Claudia while loving them but being different then them. Not by being a new Louie. If you wish to try the movies cause then at least you don't waste as much time, then go for it, but they suck too. The first movie is the best and the book has a better ending, but beyond that the movie is a great visual and vampires are better seen then knowing all their thoughts in general, but the first book is amazing.

I've always loved Claudia, simply because a well executed 'old soul in a young body' character is so rarely done. Eli from Let the Right One In is another one of my favourites (Why do people only seem to be able to pull off this sort of character with children?) I've seen characters where this is clearly what they were TRYING to go for, but they ruined it by turning it exclusively into a good thing. Edward Cullen, for example, has all the character benefits of immortality - dozens of PhDs, masterful piano playing skills, everything that can be gained from having limitless time - and none of the flaws. Well, actually, he does - the fact that he clearly has no idea how to really relate to Bella, because, you know, he's six-times her age - but this seems almost like an accident on the author's part, because it gets completely ignored in favour of all the "OMG! He's beautiful and mature!" bullshit (And it is bullshit, because I really buy Edward more as a disturbed 17-year-old than someone who is 100+ years old.) His flaws are used as nothing more than a token attempt at depth to make him a broody, Byronic hero.
@sorcerersapprentice5 жыл бұрын
Ashamed, really. In the hands of a more competent writer, that could've made a rather interesting and complex character. Like Claudia, he's a hundred year old man trapped in the body of a teenager. Imagine if he was treated as a wise old man, who has a hard time bonding with others, because everyone either treats him as a child or is weirded out by how he acts. Either treat his lust for Bella as a negative or get rid of it. That's a fascinating character. But nope. Being a bland hunk of man meat it is. 😒

One comment I will make: Drusilla is wonderful to be sure, but I think Darla's role on Angel makes her my favourite of the two. Her emotional arc of being made human again and wanting to return to mindless killing was really interesting, and I really liked her sacrifice to save Connor. It was a very fulfilling arc that sadly Drusilla never really got.
@MavenoftheEventide7 жыл бұрын
I decided to choose Dru over Darla because she's more iconic and remembered. Decades and decades from now I predict Dru will still be a thing, while Darla will be more forgotten. ALSO the fact that all the complex deep charactery stuff happened with Darla as a human (not as a vampire) makes it less vampire-focused. Buffy's vampires in general are pretty shallow by their very nature (no soul=automatically evil) so to be iconic AS a vampire amid that is a stand-out performance imo.

Interesting thought about female vampires of color, but honestly that's my big issue with vampire fiction in general. I realize that European myth is a big focus of the vampire in our society, but there are vampire myths in almost every mythology on the planet. So sticking to the vampire trope of the European nobleman or noblewoman always seems lazy to me. Heck that was one of my big issues with Anne Rice, not that her vampires don't have varied and interesting pasts and depths, but it was sort of limited in that all of her vampires tended to either be from or conform themselves into certain social groups within any given age. And even Lestat whom is the defacto rebel of the group doesn't really stray all that much. We do hear about the rogues and vampires on the outs of vampire society, but mostly they're just built up as being little better than animals or they are seen as in some way less than the group Rice focuses on. Which seems like a waste really, especially so as you consider all the times in history that different groups are oppressed by other more powerful groups. What we get with Pam being a rebellious proper Victorian woman, we could have had with tons and tons of different characters types and cultures. And when I mean tons of cultures I actually mean it. We could have had tons of minority groups of today, but also tons that were minorities just a few centuries ago or perhaps thousands of years ago. None of the wounds accumulated from being born into or forced to submit under those kinds of rule would just vanish and seeing characters dealing with out dated hatreds and biases could also be really interesting in vampire fiction. The vampire stays the same, while the world changes, or vice versa. It could actually be compelling either way in my opinion.

well a few things you should remember, Vampires are just one manifestation of a much older archetype of fear, specifically they draw heavily from the corrupt aristocrat, and the fear that your tormentors have cheated death, while other aspects of the archetype tend to show up in zombie, werewolf, witch, and (weirdly enough) alian media. these other sub-types tend to be where other aspects end up, so the reason vampires have such a tendency to look like european nobles is partly because in our subconscious there's no more dangerous a corrupt noble, than a european corrupt noble. of course this is a bit of a simplification, but it's still a part of the complex, and one of the reasons werewolves and vampires work well together. they're like siblings that have spent a bunch of time apart, and now focus on different aspects of the same archetype! :D
@LupineShadowOmega7 жыл бұрын
+Alice Bard I don't know about that. I'd say the noble aspect goes back to Dracula mostly. In common myth, vampires aren't nobles, they aren't rifts on the Incubus and Succubus, they're just corpses that are blasphemed or were undiscovered witches. What have you. And they rise out of their graves to hunger for the blood of the righteous or the innocent. In short, I'd say they marry the three fears of the day back then. The fear of death. The fear of the unknown. And finally the fear of lost innocence and righteousness. You have to remember the power of the church back then to remember just how powerfully people feared lost innocence and damnation. Also while I know you were just simplifying, I'd point out that actually, it isn't that those monsters are aspects of a archetype but rather once upon a time, all those things were the same thing. At least in Europe. Witches were the every man of monsters. As well as the explanation for anything you couldn't explain. My issue though with the corruption and nobles angle; I think is that on one hand, the nobility obviously became pop culture setting dressing after a fashion. Vampires were a period monster for quite awhile. It was always in the past, we could update it to a more recent time in the past, but always the past. So the powerful noble is the way to make the vampire even more oppressive in power. On the other hand there are notable and historic examples of nobility using their power for more than the average amount of murder and viciousness (Vlad, Báthory,Gilles de Rais, etc) . And these have been played up to fit into the vampire mythos. As for corruption, to use one's power in unjust ways is to be corrupt, but also the very nature of the vampire myth is to corrupt the innocent and righteous. All of that, is to say that I think the two go together well enough in theme that they seemed like a perfect fit for anyone looking to write a thematic story, but I don't think they intrinsically have a basis in European and by extension American culture. It feels more like Reese's peanut butter cups to me. Peanut Butter and Chocolate go well together, but that doesn't mean they're the only things that go with one another. But if your candy maker isn't really looking to try something new...then why not just fall back on things that go well together?
@marvalice34557 жыл бұрын
ok, none of that contradicts what I said. yeah the dracula codified the vampire in corrupt aristocrat tropes, but he wasn't the first. and again, the tropes of the dishonored or shameful dead have mostly been taken up by zombie fiction(remember, the two are spawned from the same archetype). now there is cross over here, vampires who aren't suave and/or authoritative tend to become cannon fodder, which can feed into both kinds of the archetype. again this isn't omnipresent, but it is very common.

I loved Claudia in the book. Even though the movie is what I saw first, I love how much more complex she was in the book. Her development from child to woman was subtle so much so it wasn't until you read her dialogue that you realized that she was in fact an adult stuck inside a child's body. I do have to wonder however, if she wasn't killed off, if she'd be able to mesh with the modern world? How would she evolve? Would she try o act more adult since medical science has an actual name for her affliction?(a name, mind you, that I can't recall at the moment.) Claudia's character, short lived as it was, never ceases to be a constant source of inspiration when I write my child turned vampires. They have such a complex set of emotions and thoughts that an adult turned vampire doesn't have nor would think to have.

But I can't believe Katherine Pierce/Katerina Petrova wasn't mentioned. She's probably the only main character female vampire of the Tvd franchise that fully relished being a Vampire. She had Sex Appeal that paid homage to the traditional female vampire with a modern twist. And we also got to see character depth, and vulnerability through her back story. She remained either a villain or anti-hero but her actions still made so many audiences cheer for her. The series lost ratings when she 'died', and many will say she was much more interesting compared to her Protagonist Counterpart. Any thoughts?

As for writing vampire characters for the future, I am writing a concept album about time travelling vampires from the future, some of whom will be female and those characters will be central to the plot. They will have complex backstories, but then a lot of that won't make the album as I've only got 45 minutes to get through quite a lot of plot. Some of it will be included in sleeve notes. I originally envisioned it as a musical which would have allowed for a lot more time to go into all the backstories.

It wasn't just in the movie; there were sexual undertones in the books because Claudia's actually a 60+-year-old woman in a girl's body and because they're vampires, but they're definitely still father/daughter. Anne herself even explicitly compares them to a dysfunctional gay family with Claudia as the daughter and Lestat as the abusive father/husband.

Old video but something I love about Seras is her relationship with Pip. Seras is a virgin but it's not nearly as fetishised as I would expect from a hentai author, more just a facet of her character as well as a necessary plot point. Pip is a bit of a womaniser but Seras isn't interested in rushing things, she wants to go at her own pace and enjoys spending time with him doing ordinary couple things like grocery shopping even in the midst of all the horrible violence and gore she wades through every day. Then when he's brutally murdered that chance at conventional happiness is taken away from her, but Pip tells her it's okay - her loss of humanity doesn't have to be solitary, he'll stay with her. Her turning into a vampire doesn't have to be violent and miserable. He offers her the chance at becoming stronger through consensual power exchange and bonding. There's a metaphor in there about how where Alucard takes power (read: sex) by force, Seras *only* drinks from Pip. Even 50 years later he's her only familiar. They're a team. Because Pip willingly gave her his life and power. Pip retains his personality and autonomy, Seras isn't alone and uses his strength. They both benefit. It's really beautiful both on it's own and read within the bloodlust = sexuality metaphor. The sexualisation of her character is annoying but comes across as more incidental, sort of a stylistic choice of the series. Because she's powerful I don't mind nearly as much as I do in trash like Highschool of the Dead (though really that thing wants me to hate it so much I find it more hilarious than anything.)

Was made aware of this well executed top 10 list by my sister. First, very well put together with very thought provoking analyses of character development and satires. Thinking of your closing questions, it's difficult to find a female vampire of color that really stands out and is worthy of your top 10 list. The first that comes to mind its Queen Akasha payed by Aaliyah. Though brief due to the tragic death of the actress, I for one would have been very interested to seeing how the film would have gone otherwise seeing as Akasha represents the Queen of all vampires as opposed to playing a supportive character; albeit still playing on female sexuality (the b word). Right up there with Claudia is Eli from Let Me In played by Chloë Grace Moretz. Much like Claudia, Eli portrays layers of complexity and not only seems to be at one with her vampire nature but has been this young girl for so long that she tries to reconnect with humanity on some levels. We don't see her development as her origins are unknown, but still, she's one of my favorites as she deals with eternity in the embodiment of a child. An amazing example of how a movie should and does respect is audience, Only Lovers Left Alive instantly rose to the top of my vampire cinema list. Although you can say this film has its cliches, it seems to simultaneously transcend them. Though this film does star Tom Hiddleston who plays Adam, his character is only as good as his polar opposite Eve, amazingly played by Tilda Swinton. This movie, to me, is like a fast forward version of two vampires who's love has endured through centuries. Eve is Adams wife (any biblical references are pure coincidental), and though she's charectorized as a wife, she embodies that of an independent woman. She shines as her own free spirited entity much like Alice does in twilight. She doesn't need Adam to define who she is, yet is his balance. They need each other and it is refreshing to see that kind of balance. Lastly, there's Bai Ling who played Lucy Westenra in the film The Breed. Known for her strong acting abilities, Bai's character is that of a wealthy artist whom has a human police detective as a boyfriend in a future where vampires and humans coexist. Lucy's story could have used more development, but she values human life much like you or I would. She accepts her nature but doesn't see it as being superior other than the fact she can't die. Although filmed in 2001, it's still worth a watch as Bai Ling is incredible. Those are the few female vampires that come to mind. Very eager to hear your thoughts on them

I figured it was a long shot, but, I DID see Vampirella in the thumbnail. Ah, well. Ironically, I actually DO think that Vampirella is a subversion of the sexy vampire cliche. She dresses skimpy, but is monogamous. She's very much a sexually dominating woman, but she doesn't use her sex appeal as a weapon. It empowers her, and doesn't make her an object. I'd like to see your perspective on this at some point.

You forgot Nyssa, from Blade II. She is a veritable ass-kicker (like Selene and Seras), but also emotionally complex: she seeks the aproval of a distant, emotionally-stunted father *and* she was raised by him with a sense of honor - but then she realizes her father only cares about honor when it suits his purposes, so she has to choose between staying in his good graces or her morality. In the end she chooses the latter, becoming a true hero and sacrificing herself to save humanity and (more immediately) Blades rag-tag group vampire hunters. Her death scene was epic (and the fact that Blade wasn't affected by it, just goes to show what a collossal douche he is ;) ).

Great list. It’s funny, when you said at the beginning that you would only pick one per franchise because two franchises would fill the entire list, I though yep, Anne Rice and True Blood would probably fill the entire top 10.

My two fav female vampires are sarah and erica from "my babysitters a vampire" series, I honestly can't choose between the two; sarah is a vampire woman of colour that takes the idea of being forever trapped in the body of a teenager and being a self loathing vampire, blending them together and giving her valid reasons to not want to be who she is due to how it means she can't change or grow as a person and that she's no longer even human and she won't be able to achieve her dreams or participate in adulthood due to her being 15-17 years old permanently but she isn't entirely mopey and sees the benefits of her powers and youth and does enjoy her work as a babysitter, she also has a fear of losing control and becoming just like her ex who turned her into a vampire and in spite of her troubles she is just as bad ass as buffy. Erica takes the idea of the seductress and turns it on its head in that she rarely does any seductive work because prior to being a vampire she was an huge social outcast nerd who was extremely smart and proud of who she was only wishing the bullying would stop, some of her hobbies were reading paranormal romance novels, watched scifi shows and played video games but once she became a vampire and got hot she abandoned her hobbies publicly, in the episode where a werewolf shows up she wants to date him so she can see what it's like to have a tragic romance, when our heroes are struggling she can come in and help them because even though now she has become the alpha bitch stereotype shes not dumb or insecure enough to discard her intelligences. These two are honestly my favorite vampires because despite coming from a cheesy show they managed to have complexity that we dont see all that often cause how many vampire stories have dealt with contemporary issues head on in a non metaphorical fashion sure the issues of growth and putting on a facade are a huge part of vampire lore but I don't think any other show has put as much thought into what it means to be a teenage vampire in a post modern setting.

With the exception of even mentioning Twilight, I loved this list. Claudia had to make this list but i was pleasantly surprised to see her at number 1, and Pam was also my favorite True Blood vamp.

Im very surprised you didn't include Caroline or Katherine from The Vampire Diaries. Then again you don't even mention the series and rarely show a pic from the show. Have you watched it and if so, what do you think of it?

Angelique (Dan Curtis' "Dark Shadows"). Lara Parker was just pure evil as well as being drop-dead gorgeous. She was also a control freak. Poor Tom Jennings, Joe Haskell and Barnabas Collins (surely, I jest).

Just re-watched this for the ... actually I don't know how many times I have watched it. But with your sign off I thought I should comment that in my novel series; there is a female vampire who works for the police department and basically they would fall apart without her (she's the IT specialist so spends most of her dialog in the books asking if they've tried turning it off and on again), she's as well developed as the rest of my characters and is asexual because I thought it would stop people from asking if she has a love interest (this was the number 1 question I got about the MC after I launched the first book) so I would definitely say that some of us are trying to break free from the stereotypes, but the audience also complains if you deviate to far.

I am late coming to this video, but I wanted to touch on one thing I feel you are wrong in. Claudia definitely deserves top billing as number one. There are few female vampires who are as deeply portrayed as she is. Still in the movie version she is completely a sociopath. from someome with extreme Antisocial personality disorder please not it is not love we don't have, it is empathy. Cluadia has little to no empathy for those she interacts with through most of the movie. She is simply doing what she wants to get the feelings she desires. That is the trademark of a sociopath, and what makes Claudia such an amazing character. If she seems to care, or understand why others feel the way that they do it is usualky an act to help her achieve some goal she has set.
@Hosenrolle16 жыл бұрын
I think the vampire reviews are great, but sometimes I don't understand the explanations because they aren't really justified. An example: in the video it is said about "Draculas Daughter": *_And her attractiveness and - yes, sex appeal - come naturally from her dignity and poise And her attractiveness and - yes, sex appeal - come naturally from her dignity and poise combined with her vulnerability, not from any needed, active effort on her part._* That sounds interesting, but how is that meant? Her sex appeal comes from her dignity and serenity, and her vulnerability? What's the connection? And what do you mean by "needed, active effort on her part"?
