I'm very pleased to find that I have already downloaded and am using several of the utilities you cite as your favorites. And certainly I will be downloading several more which I'm quite sure I can put to good use. It is so wonderful to be able to sit at my desk and, in a sense, with minimal effort "pick your brain" from across the pond. Love your videos! I continue to learn much. Another viewer sums it up well: "All the British class and elegance of this teacher and without paying anything."

There is one substitution I would make: Win32 Disk Imager for Etcher. Win32 Disk Imager can write images to flash drives like Etcher can, but it can also rip the flash drive into an image file, which Etcher cannot. One of my favorite Windows utilities is mp3gain. It is a lossless way to change the volume of mp3s. It is most useful when some songs in the collection are whisper quiet, and others are earth shatteringly loud. Having them all at a consistent volume, and me not being forced to ride the volume control between songs, makes for a more enjoyable listening experience.

Total Commander (formerly Windows Commander) is the most useful utility I've ever used on my Windows computers. It is a replacement for the native Windows Explorer file manager, but much more versatile and powerful. I believe it is considered to be shareware, so there is a free, fully functional version with a delay upon startup, or you can make a donation and receive a key which will bypass the startup delay. This utility has been #1 on my must-have list since I began using it over twenty years ago. The author continues to make improvements and add features. I keep Total Commander open on my desktop at all times, and often I will keep two of them open, giving me four panels in which I can manage my files and drives.

It should be illegal to have those *fake download buttons* on the intended download page! - 3:51 They must get more from those "advertisers" for putting in the delay before it starts downloading. That's why I would *NEVER donate* to support a product that plays those games to take advantage of the uneducated computer user.

The question you have to ask yourself is, “Do I like free software, or don’t I?” If these types of adds were banned, many of the programs you enjoy for free would not be available, or would charge a fee. This was very helpful, esp with the Mp3Tag software. It made indexing my music so much easier. I fixed 500 songs in less than an hour, whereas, using preferences in the windows explorer (and not to a high degree of accuracy), and taking over a hour to do 50, just a few days ago. This is great and know that you are appreciated.

Yeah its great.. I use it very often to see what garbage is eating away my os partition. I also like stuff like potplayer for videos, its pretty small, portable and when compared to vlc I never had issues opening and playing anything, ever. Its more conveniently modeled after former software called kmplayer that was pretty much one of the best media player before the guy sold it and it got infested with ads and malware. Then also notepad++ what becomes a completely different really powerful software with all the modules there are for it, it makes like modding games so much easier and faster, or really editing hundreds of files at once if needed, or searching thru them for some code. Another would be virtual clonedrive, a super lightweight iso image mounting, great for like isos of games etc. Other software looks like a bloatware compared to this thing. There is also a thing that makes win10 or 11 windows into tabs, forgot how its called but its directly embedded into the explorer and it makes the work so much faster and more convenient with all the features.. No more opening of 20 different windows overlapping eaxh other. Should be easy to google it, its very popular and works within explorer so not a separate program.

You should look into MPC-HC, Foobar2000, XnView. Along with possibly WireShark and Notepad ++ as well I tend to strongly prefer MPC-HC (called K-Lite Codecs on Ninite which is another thing that might be worth looking at if you haven't yet) on my PCs just because of the various codex optimized for the content I normally watch which is long MKV files, while I've generally seemed to have issues with VLC, it's sort of laggy last time I tried it, when I mostly just want it to play, scrub back and forth, and quickly take screenshots with and without subtitles. Foobar2000 in general for playing music and editing music files, most of which for me is in flac or wav format since I love high audio quality, along with music streams like R/a/dio, all of which scrobbles to Last FM, Libre FM, and ListenBrainz through pluggins. I used XnView a bit back when 64 bit IrFan View had not Unicode support, along with Sage Thumbs so I can have thumbnails for files not WIndows Explorer normally doesn't have previews for like some texture files for stuff like mods. And for stuff I don't really have a strong opinion on, WireShark is something I used once to make sure I disabled telemetry for Nox Emulator correctly, but I image it'd be useful for safety checking programs, and I use Notepad ++ with DS spell check (with custom dictionary settings like making it US English) just to quickly write up and spell check things, and very rarely to look at coding, but it might be an alternative to notetabs light you might want to take a peak at.

Just came across this very informative post. So glad to see someone else uses i-View. Its been one of my go to tools for years as it does a lot more than just work with images. With it's huge array of plugins, it deals with many audio and video formats too. One tool which I always load on any new Windows pc is Format Factory which converts Video, Audio, Pictures, Documents, DVD/CD/ISO between and to various formats. It may be a bit slow for some, but once you've set it up you can leave it to finish in its own time - it won't rip copy protected items, that's not what it's made for.

A really awesome file manager is called Total Commander. It's so much more, you can edit the menus, add shortcuts to calculate space before copying, you can FTP directly into your domain, you can add buttons, etc. After a while you will have everything in one place. No need to stress out searching for files in Explorer. And if you get the maxed out version then search for Total Commander Ultima Prime. It has several of the apps from this video built-in right into the Commander. Edit: It's also available for smartphones.

I have one or two of these as is. VLC Media Player is how I view videos offline, and Notepad++ is how I do advanced text editing, which is reserved mainly for coding and certain other types of text files not auto-associated with notepad. As far as having 64-bit exclusivity, I only ask why is it necessary. Until 32-bit is obsolete (it won't be any time soon unless 96-bit or 128-bit OS is already in the works), I don't see the point. I'd of said that paint.net/GIMP should of been included, but since those are less utility than applications, yeah. There's this software I have installed that allows one to make folder links with relative ease, makes it easier to understand for the novices out there, it's called Link Shell Extension. I used it to link my Trackmania United Forever User Folder in C: to the one I use in the larger partition where all my programs and files are installed (in retrospect I should of made the C: partition larger than ~28GB). Addendum: I have the majority of my music files in .mp3 format, but I have a lot of other music files in .ogg format (.mp3 doesn't allow for looping). Ogg files are actually really good quality, and take up less space.

I started using VLC Media Player for an odd reason. About five years ago I was checking the total power draw of a new computer I'd built. At idle the computer drew about 50W. VLC added about 5W, but Windows Media Player added 15W. I knew that some tasks, like gaming or graphics rendering, used a lot of power, but I was surprised to find so much difference between two media players. btw, Irfan View finally gave me something I'd been looking for: Windows Preview-like functionality for RAW images. Very helpful for a quick sort and cut on a new batch of photos. Thanks for the tip!

Great list Chris... most of which I already use, and that's why it's great. xD /jk Adding some others: 7zip - don't get the free trial forever Winzip, get 7zip. mplayer - if for some reason VLC is too heavy for you, or you get some weird codec problems in some ancient movie files, try this one. Media Player Classic (MPC-HC) - same as above Notepad++ - popular alternative to notepad more towards coding Keepass - password manager with local storage video production stuff - shotcut, audacity, OBS, GIMP, Camstudio... This one may sound a bit weird and you do have to take extremely good care for getting it from a reputable source, but afaik, it's kinda unique in what it does: h2testw1.4 - it's a small software designed to make a hard test on the size of USB pendrives and SD cards. Something that became necessary because the market is flooded with fake pendrives and SD cards that are actually small sized, hacked to display on Windows as large sized ones... like an 2Gb pendrive that shows up as a 128 or 256Gb one. The only way to really know is doing what this piece of software does - copying a bunch of filler files there until it reaches capacity. The hacked ones will reach it's true capacity and start deleting files... I've gotten fake stuff from Amazon and other websites, so people really have to be careful. It's the first thing I run on a newly purchased pendrive or sd card, and Amazon staff accepts this as proof that it's a fake product (at least on the only fake one I've got so far, they did). Oh, I also recommend checking all the other stuff made by the company that does Recuva - Piriform. It's all good. These are the ones I can remember right now...

I think you should be showing the *current versions* of your recommendations. You can then show us why you are using an older version. Then we can see the differences and decide for ourselves. - 5:09 Maybe the newer version works better, detects more IP addresses or is faster. I don't know because you didn't show us. I've used the older no installation required version of Angry IP Scanner but like its desktop icon 5:27 it is looking dated.
@ExplainingComputers

All utilities shown are the current version, aside from Angry IP Scanner, where I very clearly stated in the video that I use the legacy version because it does not require an install, or the installation of Java. I would not recommend anybody installing Java unless they have very good and specific reasons to do so. :)

I tried Nox Player and I unfortunately have to disagree with your "recommendation". On my system at least, it was WOEFULLY slow, loaded a completely black screen and nothing in it seemed to work. Nox apparently thinks my Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset's built-in video processor is cancer as it insists on me having either an Nvidia or ATI actual hardware graphics card. There is NO setting to modify this behavior or get Nox to recognize the hardware I have. Bluestacks was also woefully slow, but at least it would run on my laptop without bitching about my video card. In short, though, I can't recommend ANY Android emulators because laptop users who don't have the cash to drop on brand new machines will not be able to get them to run well enough to be usable. You have to have a high-end (read Ryzen Threadripper or equivalent) machine having probably a minimum of 32 cores, 128 GB of RAM and some kind of extremely fast (and thus mostly unaffordable to anyone less than rich) video card, maybe two or more, in order to just barely run either Bluestacks or Nox Player. Not recommended! Not recommended at all!

@@stephenbeets00001 Hey, sorry to know ur experience. Any virtual player really needs mid specs. I don't know why NOX behaved this way in your pc. But any emulator is just for take fancy taste, its not mandatory for us. I just said from my experience compared to all other player. I own just core I5+4GB+mSata. works fluently beside more than 10 tabs+2/3 users of Chrome. Anyway, User experience may vary.
