My main takeaway from this is that I’m buying that Ozark Trail Knife! Great Video
@KosmicHRTRacingTeam4 жыл бұрын
YES!!! these are all things that I have had issues with as well. A little background. I have never been really a "knife guy". Last year I was purchasing several tools at local hardware stores and ended up buying some fairly decent looking Gerber knives that you would get for like $15 for 2 knives and a few Crown branded knives for really cheap as well. A few months ago I started to think I should carry a knife at all times, so I started to watch many videos and doing research. I ended up buying 2 Honey badger knives based on a nutnfancy video ($30-35 each). They were light weight, used g10 handles, extremely smooth and easy deployment, perfect centering (downfall being that they are made in China and use 8cr13mov). I then saw a Smith and Wesson (around a $20 knife) that I ended up buying thinking it would be a decent knife, based on the name. Boy was I wrong, mine is a different model, but just like yours, it has a flipper tab and a thumb tab, BUT the thing just can't be flicked open, even with a little lube (im the same, I don't feel like I should have to take the dang thing apart and spend 30 min cleaning and lubing). Almost felt like this is now a throw away knife. Then I hear good things about Ganzo (this is before I knew there is a lot of hate regarding Ganzo, due to them copying iconic designs). ALL of them are $20-25 (I think I bought 4). All of them deploy very smoothly, extremely well centered, good locking and detents, AND they all either have 440c or D2 steel blades. Basically, better blades and as good of better in the deployment, smoothness and 50% less money VS the honey badgers. I then want to get into some more of a higher end knives so I buy the Spyderco Delica and Para 2 since they both get such rave reviews. Part of this is my fault, because I HATE the deployment on the Delica, being that it is a spine lock. What a pain in the butt. I am sure it has its place, I just am not sure what the point of it is yet. The other thing is, it basically uses crap plastic for the handle (not even g10 or carbon fiber). On the PM2, the center isn't great, it has taken a long time to break both of these in, break in, lube, practice, etc... Now the PM2, I can flick open with some decent wrist involvement, but it is not using bearings, so it still isn't close to my ultra cheap Ganzos or Honey Badgers. I really like the feel of it in my hand when using it, but other than that, it has been a disappointment. To add to that, both of the Sypyderco knives do NOT come with deep carry clips (all my Ganzos and Honey Badgers did) and yes, I know I can spend another $25-35 for a deep carry clip, but I really would rather spend my money on another Ganzo or Kershaw (more on this below). So I paid a lot more money for a "high end knife" or 2, and yes, I got better steel, but the overall experience has been disappointing. I then wanted to spend less but go with a "better brand" of knife, but get similar performance as the Ganzos, so I bought a couple Kershaws. Along with the Ganzos, these are my favorite knives, great centering, super smooth deployment/bearings, good locking mechanism, and deep pocket clips. These are $20-30 knives, the only downfall vs the Ganzos is that they use 8cr13mov steel. So in a weird way, I kind of feel like the Ganzos are the best for the money, the kershaw (chinese) are second best, the Honey Badger 3rd best, the Syderco are coolest to carry when I am around true knife fanatics who know, and the smith and wesson is almost money down the drain. And wow, that was much longer than I expected to type.

Why are Torx screws the default knife hardware? When I used to build cabinets, we used square drivers
@jimmystyles6704 жыл бұрын
I have had far too many torx screws strip out my bits, especially the smaller ones. A simple allen key or square driver would be perfect. If I remember correctly the crkt m16 line uses a flathead that can be adjusted with a coin. The only thing that is worse, is when one side has a Torx bit, and the other is not actually captured. So it spins on both sides as you try to tighten your knife.
@DevinBauer4 жыл бұрын
They can be cut shallow or offer excellent torque . They are vastly superior to phillips. I can't speak for international but at least here in the USA square is rather uncommon and has worse torque than a torx. The trick with Torx of course is you need to use good quality drivers
@DevinBauer3 жыл бұрын
@@dylanmichael3985 Phillips are literally designed to cam out which results in damage or stripping of the fastener head. Torx provide better torque transmission with less wear on the fasteners, a nice consideration on an expensive tool that is taken apart and cleaned. Where torx is a problem is when the designers of the fastener in question design a shallower head than they should, you loose the torque benefit and increase the likelihood of damaging the fastener, at which point you'd be just as well off with a cheaper phillips fastener

On those shitty knives that have that problem, I've found that if you rotate both sides of the pivot adjustment hardware you can get them more in line...sometimes(talkin' to you Gerber!).
ALL pivots should be captive, I shouldn't need 2 sets of torx bits, 2 drivers and trying to figue out how the hell I'm going to hold one driver and the knife while tightening the pivot.. to tighten my pivot.

@@dylanmichael3985 Well, that's why they're cheaper. Cheaper because tolerances are loose...things aren't perfectly round, softer steel, etc.

@@SerpentLordYes, I know that. You're not understanding the point of my comment. You said that if you rotated both sides of the pivot assembly you would be able to center the blade, my comment was stating that you shouldn't be able to rotate both sides of the pivot assemble because one side should be captive. All pivot assemblies should be captive on one side. Thats how its properly done. I shouldnt need 2 sets of torx drivers to adjust my pivot or put the knife back together, and when one isn't captive the pivot never tightens properly and it can work itself out of adjustment.

Kershaw is an excellent example of a company encouraging this by making spare parts so easy and free to get. On the other hand we know the company beginning with S that discourages this any way they can. I'm not mailing my knife at my expense so it can be cleaned. That's half (maybe more) the fun of having knives. I bought an Rat 2 D2 that still can't be centered and opened. I sent it back after they worked on it after they sent me new washers and I think a pivot screw set. I could go on but won't. I enjoy your videos and am subscribed fully.

Along the lines of detent lash/hole placement, a pet peeve of mine is not placing the detent hole at the very end of detent's track. At best it's an annoyance. At worst it can be dangerous with a sharp blade tip sticking out while lying in wait to ambush an unsuspecting hand!
@rickkerans84854 жыл бұрын
There are other things but I totally agree with the ones you listed. Another is unfinished edges. Where there are sharp spots on the liners or the scales.A sharp point when open where the flipper and frame meet or frame lock. Another thing is an over tightened pivot or excessive thread locker. If I feel I am going to ruin the screw and they didn't send a replacement screw or screws back it goes. The little sharp spots are annoying and can usually be fixed with Emery cloth. The thing is I shouldn't have to do anything to fix a knife I spent money on. I hate opening a knife to find out I have to fix something for it to work or feel right. I have usually been eager to get the knife then it has something sharp or stuck or too loose that I then have to wait even longer to fix it to use it. AAAARRRRGGGG. Great video I really liked hearing someone else find these kinds of things maddening and worthy of returning the knife. Thank you.

Blades that dont utilize the full length of the handle when closed, thanks for giving me less cutting than we know you could have. 4. Plunge grinds that make fixed angle sharpening impossible to sharpen the edge without ruining the look of your blade. 5. @TrueCarpenter4 жыл бұрын
As someone JUST entering as a knife "enthusiast", my biggest issue is the lack of variability in design (color, how it opens/locks, blade quality). for example, i decided to go with spyderco tenacious, it has 8Cr13MoV steel, which is perfectly fine for me, and this knife is in my price range. But I didnt want the closing action (to close i have to put my thumb in line of the blade) whatever you call that. So to get the closing function that is operated at the spine is double the price opting for para 3 lightweight. or triple the price for a para 2 or 3.. I mean, it is what it is, but I love the look and feel of my sypderco. but I dont make huge money, so my next knife isnt going to be another spyderco. Dissapointing, but i guess im not the customer they are looking for?
@TheBigToe694 жыл бұрын
You obviously don’t know what it takes to produce cost wise the compression lock and higher quality steel knives. The tenacious is a liner lock which is a fairly common style lock capable of one hand operation. If you want a cheap knife with as you say your fingers out of the way style lock, you need to buy a back lock knife. You then lose the majority of one hand operations with it. I’m not criticizing what you can afford but don’t criticize Spyderco on their costs just because you can’t afford the higher quality knives. I don’t criticize Chris Reeves Knives just because I can’t afford their 450$ Sebenza or Inkosi knives, even though they are just titanium frame lock knives and S35vn steel blades.

Regarding screws & bolts - it's not so much torx (t6, t8) which is the problem (they take bigger torque than any), but non-standard head sizes. IMHO, Allen (hex) socket causes more problems in this respect. And yes it's a pain getting these outside of US, had to resort to an ugly replacement on my old CRKT :(

I was surprised there wasn't more talk about pocket clips. Why can a knife come in lots of different colors or scale materials, but you can't order a left or right-handed knife without holes and welts all over the place "just in case you want to change it"? There are so many really nice looking designs out there that are compromised by a big ol' bump with holes in it for alternate clip mounting. Then there's clip location, deep carry, recessed screws, etc. Lots to discuss on that subject alone.
@abc456f4 жыл бұрын
My Shaman is slightly off center but not touching the scale, drops shut freely, no blade play, so I'm willing to live with it. Native Chief has uneven grind at the tip. Hold it up against a white background and you can see it. Sage 5 won't drop freely no matter how much I mess with it. Well it will drop free if I introduce blade play. So that's Spyderco's qc. Now on to Benchmade. Some of them drop nice and smooth, others require a pretty forceful shake. Some have sticky axis locks. I've sent in a few for warranty work and they've come back pretty much the same. Next, ZT. After I saw Nero's video on slipping locks, I went and checked my nine zt's. Six of them failed a spine tap. Literally a tap. To their credit I guess, after sending them in, they came back corrected. For me it boils down to consistancy. Get it right, out of the box, every time.

For those who think negative about this video: This video is about standards. We all have standards; some less strict than others. Edge grinds are a standard I am on board with. The other standard I have an issue with is guided sharpeners that mark up your knife. We have a lack of industry standards across the board.

Amen on spare screws! I have dozens of knives with at least 1 stripped T-6 screw! And while we’re at it, BAN T-6 screws!!!! There’s NO excuse for them! Nothing less than a T-8 should EVER be used in the knife industry!

I freely voice this opinion and this is aimed squarely at Emerson knives. Chisel grinds are not useful for 99% of edc tasks and most of us aren't using our knives to scrape barnacles off of ship hulls. I get where Ernest is coming from and I respect the man and how much success and respect hes garnered for his brand. However, chisel grinds really lessen the edge holding ability and can make cuts go wonky on you depending on the material being cut. Chisel grinds really don't have a place in EDC/tactical knives IMO, especially when they cost $200+. My full size Jungle Commander was one of my favorite overall knife designs, but I got rid of it due to its total lack of edge holding ability. I mean one cut through cardboard and the edge was essentially dulled to uselessness. This may have been a combo of the chisel grind and the 154cm which, in my experience, has not historically received the best heat treat. Just my 2 cents on that specific topic though.

I agree 100% on knives having perfect edge grinds, and beveled to at least 20 degrees on both sides. I mean that's the most important aspect of a knife , that it should cut bloody well. And it should be like that when you buy it . (FROM Dave )

Poorly designed pocket clips that cannot be adjusted. Example: Kershaw Freefall assisted opening. Decent for the money, but the pocket clip is way too tight, and just as you have warned T-6 adjustment screw cannot be backed out or loosened. I have no reason to take knives apart. However, I completely agree that the screws should be big enough to allow the option.

I've thought about buying T6 bits in bulk, I've stripped out so many of those
@jbeers12344 жыл бұрын
My only tip for you is on stripping T8 (or smaller) screws. Many people dong know this, but screwdrivers, and especially bits, are DISPOSABLE. If you are disassembling knives daily, or even weekly, you should be replacing you bits every few months. Stripping screws has nothing to do with the size of the screw, rather it is 100% caused be the failure of the bits.
@metal_complex4 жыл бұрын
I'm not doing it daily. I do it periodically and when I'm dealing with T6 screws I slip more often. I'll always prefer T8+ over T6.

My number 1 and 2 issues personal is is first steel that’s not heat treated properly or poor choice of steel on a 250 dollar knife. Second when the knife comes from the factory with uneven grinds.

I think the edge grinds are my biggest pet peeve. I won't name the company, but I ordered a knife from a well-reputed company which I've heard has *great* edges. First one sucked. It was like 12-13° on one side and well over 25°, maybe 30° on the other side. Sent it in to get replaced, and they sharpened it instead of replacing, but sent me another shipping label to send it in again and then they replaced it. But I'd bought a second version of the same knife, and all 3 blades I ended up getting had uneven edges. The first one was definitely the worst, but the other two were not great. So disappointing. Makes sharpening a pain, especially if you're actually trying to even out the edge. I don't get why they don't just have jigs to put the edges on their blades to keep them consistent.

Great points to be made. Referring to the part about the detent clutch with the 0562, if you remember I told you about it, Sent in to ZT and came back with new pivot screw but same issue. I called and the Service Rep stated my issue has to do with the Detent Ball (duh!) and its a production knife so there is no modification to be done, thats how it is! (HUH?,really?) For what its worth it only seems to be 0562, two other buddies have same exact issue. Still love the ZT's though, 0393 and 0550 great knives.

“Double clutch” - agree that frame locks that don’t have great detent designs are annoying. Good call out! But the use of the term “double clutch” is not a term used in the knife world to describe bad detent design - and it’s just awkward. I’ve been seriously into knives since around 1990 and never heard “double clutch” used in our knife world. Just saying. Keep up the good work, though!

I enjoy your videos. One grip that I have not seen much online is the very hard/sharp edges on the back of the blade and metal parts (back lock depress bar, etc.) parts from the Spyderco knives. I have dozens of knives from $20 to 400 dollars, and all (except the Spyderco) have very smooth edges. Spyderco, why? Although there is one video of a gentleman smoothing the back edges of his Spyderco blade.

The worst grinds I have ever seen on knives are: 1. Benchmade 940( first Benchmade I ever ordered) I sent it back. 2. Made in China Kershaw, can’t remember what model, I kept it because it wasn’t worth sending back. 3. My ZT 0562Ti , should have sent it back but I love it so much I couldn’t be without it.

Regarding warranty, NO! It's not up to the manufacturer. Voiding the warranty for performing maintenance on a consumer product is illegal in the US unless improper maintenance caused the failure, the burden of proof for which is on the manufacturer. See the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act for details.

from my understanding is Microtech put proprietary hardware on their knives to prevent idiots from injuring themselves or someone else while disassembling any of their automatic knives while still under spring tension. There is a video of a guy trying to put his HALO back together again and ended up shooting the blade across the room. at what point is the manufacturer responsible to protect them from themselves/cover their own asses from lawsuits?

Better Quality out of TwoSun Knives for a fraction of the price. The below $35 market has me amazed that they can even make a knife, good, bad or ugly. I like to practice sharpening on Ozark trail products. Great Video Thank you very much : )

Torx bits (even Wiha) are perishable tools. They wear out & will need to be replaced. Especially the smaller sizes. If your #2 Phillips screwdriver starts to spin out of screws frequently you replace it. Same thing with a Torx driver. Regarding spare hardware, my only complaint is a lack of “readily available” hardware. I don’t mind paying five to ten bucks for a hardware kit. Kizer does this but it takes an annoyingly long time to get since they ship from China.
@metal_complex4 жыл бұрын
I'm aware that tools are perishable. Everything is perishable. I dont want to be forced to use my weaker torx bits when the problem could be solved by changing the size if the fastener on the knife.

Metal Complex My comment wasn’t really directed to you as you always are competent & capable in your videos. It was just for awareness about tool wear. I’ve known a fair number of folks who seem to think that every tool they own will last a lifetime. My background is tool & die / CNC machining and have dealt with T6 (& even T5) since they fasteners were introduced in indexable cutting tools. Guess I’m just used to them more than some folks.

Didn't even know this issue had a name: DOUBLE CLUTCH. Holy shit, I HATE A DOUBLE CLUTCH. Super annoying, and is EXTREMELY apparent in the XM 18 skinny liner lock. You think the knife is free to close, then SIKE, it's caught on the detent ball. I still have never seen a "ramp" done on a knife outside of people modding it themselves. Maybe I am not high enough in the knife food chain yet, but I am starting to think a ramp needs to be on most knives.

How about detents that are not appropriate for the design? Say, front flippers that have a stiff closed detent that make opening the knife super hard? Or no jimping on the flipper tab and your thumb slips off due to too stiff detent for that type of design? Hate it!
