I moved from a small town in upper NY State to Frankfort Kentucky in 1991 when I was 31 years old. I stayed with beer until about 5 years ago, then switched more to bourbon. I still buy Juice Force IPA by New Belgium out of Asheville NC once in awhile. I now have 4 favorite bourbons/whiskeys- 100 proof Old Grand-Dad, 100 proof Early Times, 90 proof Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey, and 100 proof Coopers' Craft. $21 to $35 a bottle. I have to clean the black angel share fungus off the roof of my vehicle about once a year, from living and working close to Jim Beam and Buffalo Trace distilleries in Frankfort. Castle & Key and Glenns Creek distilleries are about 5 miles south, also Wild Turkey and Four Roses about 15 miles south. My rebuys are made in Clermont and Louisville, Kentucky.

I was at WKU from 1976 through 80. At the SAE house we were loyal to MM and Coke. If going budget, Benchmark was a great option. Such great memories. I was Student Government president and one big breakthrough we achieved was getting ice in the cokes at the games! The administration feared it would lead to drinking. It did. That was 1978.

So glad to be in one of the 13 Early Times states! And I will never fight over EW BiB. I’m sure I knew this before, but I go to WKU tubers for bourbon with you and economics with the elder Zoomer Kyla Scanlon. If I am home, I pretty much go non-alc thru about halftime of the 2:30 game tho, and if I am out, I find beer easier to keep track of. And I fear I will have to take Erin’s advice and go high proof in despair after OU-Texas in two days…maybe we get some receivers back by Bama. Great list, squad!

…and ginger ale is my go-to highball mixer, but someone turned me onto the occasional use of Diet Dr. Pepper…beyond the obvious Diet Coke.

Whiskey and ginger ale is wonderful drink for mixing with soda. Jack and coke is too sweet for me nowadays but 101 and Canada Dry is perfect imo.

I need to know your old fashioned recipe. Mine is 2oz of whiskey, 2 bar spoons of Demerara gomme syrup (2 tsp), 2 dashes of angostura, 1 dash of orange bitters. Garnish with an orange twist and a cherry. I use Maker's 46 when making it for my wife and Old Forester Rye when making it for me. I also add a dash of absinthe to mine.

I prefer the Benchmark Top Floor for mixing myself ... it ain't bad for sipping, but I prefer the Single Barrel for sipping. During my time at UGA, we were too cheap for Evan Williams ... we rolled with Ezra Brooks 😁

'SKO BuffS, Go Broncos!! Great list. I understand why you would want a lower cost for a mixer, but it seems to me a better bourbon will give a better mixed drink. Do people tend to disagree and think no matter how good it is, it will be lost in the background of the bitters and other ingredients?
@stuffandwhiskeyАй бұрын
Mixed drinks for game day and elevated cocktails are two different animals. We do enjoy a nice spirit it an elevated cocktail when it’s at the forefront of the experience. On game day the game and present company take center stage unless we’re sharing near pours together.

I haven't watched American football since the last time the Ravens were in the Super Bowl. I just lost interest. But if I ever come back I'll support the Ravens and the Texans in the NFL. On the college level all I care about is the Texas-Oklahoma game - Hook 'Em Horns! 🐂 7:24 The Old Forester 100 is good whisky. 9:29 So's the Turkey. In fact, though they are different, on my palate Wild Turkey 101 and OF 100 are similar - dark, earthy, and substantial. 12:37 Of the entries that I've had so far, which is only three at this point, I rate Buffalo Trace last. It's just not special to any degree or in any way, in my judgment. Obviously YMMV. 🙂 17:58 Evan Williams Bottled In Bond is, in my judgment, nearly as good as Turkey 101 and Old Forester 100.
@stuffandwhiskeyАй бұрын
You’re pretty spot on across the board. Especially about Buffalo Trace (which is where its broad appeal comes from since it’s low proof and disappears on the background). WT101 actually had flavor and presence.

Jack Daniel's bonded is $38 in the Chicago area. It's also only 700 ml vs the usual 750 ml bottle (why did they chintze on the bottle size?).
@stuffandwhiskeyАй бұрын
International is all 700ml so it lets them produce less variation on glass size worldwide to keep cost lower. 50ml is just 2 oz and not something that bothers us personally because we don’t really drink in high volume for it to matter, but we get how others might feel slighted by it.
@xiamengbabyАй бұрын
@@stuffandwhiskey I know that international uses a 700 ml size, but it seems everything else JD puts out is in 750 ml bottles except for this bonded series (JD bonded, JD Rye bonded, and JD Triple Mash) and none of my other American whiskeys and even most of my Scotch single malts are still in 750 ml bottles. Some that have made the switch to smaller size, the price stays the same or increases (when it was supposed to result in a cost savings for the distiller). The shrinkage is just an additional slap in the face when the price is already steep for what you're getting.
@johng5710Ай бұрын
