A good start is High Society, Scout, Love Letter, Archduke, That's Not A Hat, Naturopolis, Santo Domingo, Werewords, Zero Down, and Arboretum.

Coming from decades of video games, I began board games in January and started with some different games : Dune Imperium (good choice to put it in your list, it's easy but rich and competitive), terraforming Mars, Arkham Horror and Expeditions. Having a blast, bought Friday, Final Girl, Cartaventura and a few smaller solo games, waiting now for Gloomhaven JOTL, Earthborne Rangers and Heredity.

This is me, JOTL is great, haven't played the others as I went the more campaign game route (ISS Vanguard, Kingdom Death: Monster), also have Too Many Bones, Dungeon Degenerates and League of Dungeoneers in the queue or on order, so I'll be busy for a while. Definitely want to get into Arkham Horror LCG soon! That'll probably come in between some of the smaller box titles I play between the bigger ones. It's been great to jump into some great tabletop games and take a break from PC that I was starting to tire of for a variety of reasons

@@Quen10k same. After playing From Software games for a few years, I couldn't find much excitement in video games anymore. I'm happy to spend less time in front of screens and more time with actual things in my hand. Also, I find board games relaxing (even Arkham), similar to reading (still prefer reading). I'm also quite interested in campaign now, that's why I bought the last three I mentioned (all campaign games, but very different from each other - Heredity is a huge hit in France, it's very original, I don't know when it will come in other countries). @tteshera10 ай бұрын
The caveat to The Loop is that it's very difficult - more so than most cooperative games. It's one of our favorite games, but we house rule it to make it easier. If you strictly follow the rules, I'd venture to say most gamers would find it too punishing. I've seen many reviewers rate it poorly because of this. It's a shame they didn't include difficulty modifiers out of the box, but it's very easy to fix to make it a VERY enjoyable game for any level of gamers.

@@thecuriousboardgamer yes, i‘ve heard that before, i find the symbols for the card types unintuitive and have a higher mental load in everdell with keeping track of what cards i am hunting for (i.e. the free cards). In Dune everything is can do is open info and during a turn the uncertainty is coming from the other players, cards not showing up at the market is less of a concern (in base dune, don‘t know if the grafting in Immortalität changes this)
@LeeKenshin710 ай бұрын
Great list. Best pick is Dune, top 5 for me with expansions. Uprising makes it top 3. My copy of trailblazers travel is coming this week. For auction, I would choose Ra over Art Society. Quest for El Dorado was a great game until we "tried hard" it; whomever got to the base camp first and trimmed their deck down to 8 or so 4-cost cards, wins easily. Prefer Wonderland Wars over Quacks for the player interaction and we shorten the game by removing one extra location and never play at 5. I got to try out the Loop.
@ianw0ng9 ай бұрын
in full 4 players game, sometimes not so easy to trim your deck to the perfect 4 cards before someone else is already a few inches away from winning. i've played with someone who's very quick building his best deck, but just because his path was blocked once or twice, someone else who didnt even bother trimming her deck ended up winning.
@LeeKenshin79 ай бұрын
@@ianw0ng I'm sure that happens. Just didn't with our group but then again, we are a bunch of "tried hard" so after 7 games with the same winning strategy, it was enough to get rid of it. I suppose if you play with the shorter maps, then rushing to the end without trimming would be a more viable strategy but this was a fast enough game that we always played with the longer maps. I'm glad others have fun with it; just not for our group.

If Cascadia sounds interesting, but you are more into fantasy than nature, Overboss is very similar. Squares instead of hexes, dungeons and monsters instead on nature and animals. But still drafting two overlapping tableaus and trying to make them work together. Also, 360 some dollars is still less than a PS5/XBox (whatever), just the system with no games.

While I enjoy hearing different opinions on a list of games, and it can be useful to have lists of more approachable games for (relatively) new gamers, I can't help but wonder who would actually consciously choose to start a board game collection and have use for such a video. I would think most people just buy/look for what they would like and would thus be best for them (e.g. 'a two player game with a nature theme') and not what would be considered best for a general collection. After all, it's not the general public playing; it's you (and possibly your friends/family/gaming group). If someone were to be purposefully planning to buy more games for their collection, the better advise would not be 'get a game of this list', but 'learn what type of games you like to play most, and what number of players and playtime is most common for you (or what you are missing a suitable game for), so you can get a game you'll actually like and play'. Videos such as this one might be more useful for someone looking to start a collection for a shop or event, in order to have something for various people to play and discover the hobby, but I rarely see such a title/description instead somehow. Hopefully those people will find them regardless 😉
@BoardGameCo10 ай бұрын
That's interesting conversation to be sure, I do believe this type of video is actually useful to the right person... But I acknowledge that the right person often isn't yet at the point where they are browsing KZbin for video like this. The question I've always had, is whether that's me projecting my own biases of how I operate, or whether they're actually are people out there who play a game or two and then head straight to you too to find a video like this. Alternatively, I can easily see this being the kind of video that when someone knew is getting into gaming, someone who has watched it, recommends it. Ultimately, I'm not sure. I do think that I disagree that someone new to the gaming should figure out what kind of game they like before using a list like this... The whole point of this is that it has a wide assortment of mechanics and game types that all are still generally accessible. I frequently get asked by people what games I recommend, and those are the types of games that tend to make their ways into videos like this.
@Zomerdromen10 ай бұрын
@@BoardGameCo Thank you for the elaborate reply and sharing your thoughts! I do agree that the list has some good recommendations for different mechanisms and game types. It's just that I think it's better to try than actually buy such a wide variety, as many people are likely to not have such a wide taste themselves or have the right gaming group for all those differences. So, definitely a useful video (and also enjoyable for many of us that probably don't need it!), just something I would have named/framed differently 😜 And yes, that might very well also be influenced by personal experience/preference so there's likely no real right or wrong answer 😉

@@BoardGameCoI’m not new to gaming in anyway but I am looking to start/continue a board game collection. I used this list to help find games that have some interesting mechanics and some actual strategy but are also games that will get to the table. My group are big gamers (mostly magic the gathering) but we are too busy to get a 3-6 hour game to the table. We are also only going to play board games 3-6 times a year (again are go to is magic instead). So this list was perfect to find games that will scratch that gamer itch, give us a good many mechanics to play, while still being games that will get to the table as they are easy to teach and not super long. Basically what I’m saying is, this list is more then just for new gamers. It is a great resource for multiple reasons. I consider myself a seasoned gamer and I found it very useful. While I won’t buy all of these games, while making my list of the next 10 games I was going to buy I would say 4-5 came from this list.

I really disagree with dune. Yes it's a great game but it's not just too complicated for starting a collection. It's a mashup of mechanisms which are best learned in their own, the conflict portion you mentioned, and it's an IP game and not a very good looking one at that. I'm not saying someone who isn't interested in dune couldn't enjoy the game, they can. But it's a much tougher sell to get a fledgling game group into especially if there are women in the group. I would pick meadow or ticket to ride if you wanted something with more conflict.
