Raiders of the North Sea - for everything you said. High Society - for everything you said, covers auction/bidding and arguably resource/hand management. Carcassonne - for everything you said. The Shipwreck Arcana - a beautiful co-op deduction game that shows how much game you can get out of a very little package. And it's cheap! Parks - another beautiful, easy to understand game. Teaches one-way action tracks and has a wonderful theme. Also shows a deluxified style game for a standard game price. On Tour - The obligatory roll and write in the collection, but it's infinitely scalable and helps everybody be in misery together. The stories that people tell during the game (well screw Montana we aren't going there!) are great. Indulgence - Everybody should have a trick taking game and this one is a good step up from the Hearts that everybody knows and plays. Familiarity while expanding on the concept. Space Base - Dice chucking but for incredibly high player interaction. Also helps teach engine building and you can ignore the green power ships until you understand the game better. Plus it helps provide for that high player count and has great expansions. Camel Up - I love this game at high player counts (6-8) and helps show betting/racing. It's also essentially a party game - I've never seen the table not get super into it and start swearing about their bets going wrong. King of Tokyo - Dice chucking but in the Yahtzee style. Hard to not get into the theme and it scales up for people. I like KoT Dark the best, but either one works.

Point Salad (filler set collection) 6. Werewords (party bluffing) 5. 7 wonders duel (2 player) 4. The Quacks of Quedlinburg (push your luck) 3. Century: Spice Road (deck building) 2. Barenpark (tile placement) 1. Wingspan (engine building, tableau building, upgrades, set collection, dice rolling, resource management, excell...whatever you want) Honorable mention: Porto (amazing for introducing new players and...it's portuguese)

Carcassonne Azul Ticket to Ride (VS or Europe) Quacks of Quadlinburg Quest for el Dorado Escape: curse of the temple Bärenpark* Everdell* Taverns of Tiefenthal Deception: Murder in Hong Kong The two titels with an * are still to be added to our collection. Hé guys, I love the energy you put in your videos! Keep em coming. Greetings from The Netherlands.

Great list. I started with Heroscape and Catan... neither of which I'd put on my starter list, which is obviously different from games I'd keep if I could only have 10 (cause you'll pry Heroscape from my cold... dead... hands... also, avenge my death). You asked... so it's your fault I'm about to ramble. 10. Celestia - It's a great push your luck that I find incredibly easy to teach. 9. Lovecraft Letter - Loveletter is so easy. Lovecraft letter lets you take it just a step further and allows a larger player count. 8. Dice Forge - Two actions: forge your dice or buy a card. It also has that LEGO appeal of taking your dice apart and making them new. 7. Space Base - It is by far the best of these type of games that I've played. I love it. It is my replacement for Catan. It doesn't have negotiation and trading but does have the main roll/get something aspect, but unlike Catan or Machi Koro, you're never going to get screwed. 6. Potion Explosion - "Oh, have you played Candy Crush? OK, you basically know how to play this game. It's Harry Potter Candy Crush" It's so much fun, and the marble gimmick is amazing and I wouldn't have it any other way. Pull a marble, make them explode and watch the chain effects. Drink a potion, do something really cool. 5. Azul - quick & simple drafting. I find almost anyone can enjoy this game. I gave this to a friend, who texted me and said I found the first game his wife enjoys playing. He said I did something He hadn't been able to do in 10 years of marriage. I enjoy the complexity the other versions bring to the table, but the original can't be beaten. It's so pure, making it a nearly perfect starter game. 4. Sagrada - For all the reasons you listed. Oh. This is such a good game. 3. Century Spice Road: Golem Edition (Sorry Nick) - I HATED Splendor. I found it painful to play. So when someone had me play this, I went into it begrudgingly. I went home and bought a copy. Simple choices. I love the puzzle of building your engine, then having to tactically change course when someone grabs the card you were building to. And didn't win this game for over a year. I didn't care. 2. Welcome To - I haven't' been able to try cartographers, but I could play this over and over again. It's my "Flip/Roll & Write" favorite. 1. Dixit - To be honest, I could probably make an entire list of almost all these style games: Detective Club, When I Dream, Muse, Obscurio, Mysterium... But Dixit is still my favorite. I enjoy getting to think of your clue and trying to make something that some might get and others won't. This is easily in my Top Ten of all time. I've played it more than any other game in my collection. I have almost every expansion. You could use these cards in Detective Club. Oh gosh. Does anyone want to play right now? Oh, you're stuck in your home. Ok. DAMN IT, PAULA!!! I've played all of these with new gamers, I've played most of them with my kids.

I think Santorini and Century (SR or Golem) are great collection pieces. They are both simple enough to be gateways but deep enough to be fun for more advanced players. Especially Santorini where you can take out the god cards and play as a gateway then add in the god cards to ramp up the difficulty later. I played a handful of games before I started my collection but my first ten were: 1) One Night Ultimate Werewolf 2) Ikusa 3) Sushi Go 4) Century SR 5) Terraforming Mars 6) Santorini 7) Munchkin (given to me) 8) Secret Hitler 9) Bang TCG 10) Pandemic w/On the Brink Exp. (bought from a friend as a set). Out of those I've definitely gotten Century out more than the others, then Santorini, then Sushi Go. I have Azul SP but that and Sushi Go i don't find as fun as the other two or as essential.

So good boys! Loved this list. Some new ones I've earmarked to buy soon. Here's my list from my own collection that I would recommend for a starter's collection... in no order (read more to see my thoughts on each): Carcassonne Tiny Towns Wingspan Code Names Sushi Go Party 6 Nimmt (6 Takes) Zombie Dice Wurfel Bohnanza Parks Mysterium I'd agree with Carcassonne. I have the big box and it got played many times upon first purchase. Tiny Towns has really been a good one for new players. The Tetris feel is so real and it has been a winner straight off the bat with new players. Wingspan is a dream to play as it is astheticly next level and it comes with a tutorial for newbies. Code names is just the best party game and is a big winner at our game nights for all ppl. Saw someone put sushi go... Yes!!! I'd actually say Sushi Go Party. This intros card drafting and does it with such a fun theme. Excellent playtime range and lots of variety. You could play this game in Covid lockdown for a whole day and not get bored. Can I just say as a card game here, 6 Nimmt (6 Takes) has got to be the most played game of all time in my household. The fact you can play up to ten ppl, and like you said before with those tense moments where it just created big, memorable plays... And for the price, you must own it! Zombie Dice is a fun push your luck game and the ability to play infinite number of ppl technically is also a plus. As a school teacher, my primary aged kids loved this game and it was a staple on rainy days. Going with a much lesser known one here, Wurfel Bohnanza. It is by far the best variant of the much loved Bohnanza series. It is a 5 player max game but literally every player is fully engaged on every person's turn (like tiny towns). There is almost no down time in this game. Maximum value! Gotta have a meatier game here as well, and I was just introduced to Parks near the end of 2019 by a good friend. I liked it so much that I immediately went out to buy it! It is such a unique and simple to understand (yet potentially deeeeep) game that is visually stunning. The packaging of the game is next level phenomenal as well. So satisfying. Mysterium. You have to have a good co-op game and I can't think of one that's more satisfying, communicative, different, quirky or beautiful. Also, the difficulty level is so easily adjustable. This game has been a winner everytime it's been played with new players as well. Easy to learn. So satisfying when you win!

We almost put Tiny Towns on the list! Though it can be a tad expensive for how big the game is so we left it off, but we totally agree with you! And instead of Sushi Go! We recommend Sushi Roll. Same game but much easier to teach the concept of drafting to new people! Great list!

Without spending too much time thinking about it, my list would probably be: Bohnanza, Small World, 7 Wonders, Azul/Patchwork, Clank! A Deck-Building Adventure/Star Realms, Dixit, Isle of Skye, King of Tokyo, Hanamikoji, and Ra. And if people want something a bit more complicated, I would toss in Tzolk'in and Castles of Burgundy (despite how ugly the artwork is). I haven't played most of the games you mentioned, but I really enjoyed Wingspan. I am really keen on trying Raiders of the North Sea! I am not a fan of Carcassonne at all. It is definitely in the bottom 25% of games I have played (if you don't count total crap like Monopoly and Mench: ärgere dich nicht).
@TheBrothersMurph4 жыл бұрын
I think Clank! Is a great choice for that next level game. It's still relatively simple and teachable but has some meat on it's bones. Also the push your luck aspect is just so fun!

Good list. I'd include Azul. For betting I would include For Sale or Cursed Court over High Society. Century Spice Road. Architects over Raiders, maybe. No trick-taking I see? Consider Indulgence or Skull King. My gaming group also enjoyed Blue Moon City and El Grande. (As a side note, I purchased El Grande Big Box from Amazon about a year ago for about 24 dollars. That's crazy)
@TheBrothersMurph4 жыл бұрын
Trick taking is tough. Unless the people you are playing with have some interest in learning the mechanic or grew up playing it, they can be notoriously hard to get to the table. But we totally agree that Indulgence is the one we'd choose. We love Skull King but it's a little advanced for a first trick taking in our opinion.

@@TheBrothersMurph Agreed with everything you said. My game group, which really only consists of my sisters, their hubbies and kids, grew up with Oh Heck! However I did teach my 8 year old daughter how to play Diamonds, so there's that.

This is an awesome video! So, my first ten games were: 1. Poop the game 2. Saboteur 3. Lost Cities 4. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza 5. Port Royal 6. Schotten Totten 7. Love Letter 8. Colt Super Express 9. Exploding Kittens 10. The Game Since then me and my gf bought and have played around 30 different board games..we often play as a couple, bring games to parties and play with our younger relatives..so games we play are suited for those types of situations: short, fun, easy to teach (sometimes hard to master 😂), suited for pre teens, teens and adults, small enough so we can bring them with us, etc.. We got into the board game world in december of 2021, so we are still sorta new to the game 😂

As someone who just seriously started collecting a year ago: Sagrada, Wingspan, Carcassonne are 3 huge staples for me. I also love Barenpark (PRAISE BE TO PWH!) on BGA but decided to grab NYZ as my polyomino zoo game lol. PS: I may be one of the only people who does not love quacks…and learned it early in my gaming days. I’ve been enjoying Living Forest which has that similar bust mechanic, so maybe you guys will just have to teach me how to love Quacks at a Con.

This is probably the least controversial list you've ever done, just due to the inherent nature of the topic - someone who would create a completely different list could still completely agree with yours. That said, I'd definitely include Abyss and Downforce. Everybody sucks at buying games when they first get into the hobby. 7 or 8 years ago (I think?), the first two games we bought were Babel and Pandemic, not knowing anything about either. Pandemic is THE quintessential co-op game, and Babel is what you play with friends you never want to see again. We played Babel when we got back from the FLGS, and cracked the shrink on Pandemic last year - clearly did those in the right order.
@TheBrothersMurph4 жыл бұрын
Ha! We have always stayed away from Babel for that reason.

Nice list guys, you clearly love board games and I love hearing your opinions and experience of the games you play. I have a non-board gaming family I'm trying to convert. so I purchased several games. I started with Ticket to Ride as this was the most similar to the old family games they had played before. Forbidden island was next as an easy to play game, then Tucana to teach them new mechanics , castle panic to teach hand management and collaborate play , Flashpoint because the goal and rules are simple to learn but still has a randomness to the game is fun, and then Roll player to introduce playing with dice, hand management and strategy all together and to widen their horizons on what a board game can be. I also got Spirit island, but that was a mistake as its too advanced for where the are right now. I'm hoping to progress them to Everdell and Root soon, as that will it teach them the mechanics of area control, and worker placement and puts all the other mechanics together...oh and also because I really want to play those two games myself :)
