@jeremyhegg93674 жыл бұрын
Yeah one of my favorite builds. Shawn wanted the rematch, but Taker refused. He asked Vince, but Vince told him he had to make it happen himself. He entered the Royal Rumble, but ultimately lost. He couldnt even qualify for the Elimination Chamber, so he had no choice but to cost Taker the title in the other Chamber and put his career on the line to finally make it happen. All the while he caused DX to lose the Tag Titles and finally buried the hatchet with Bret. It really tied up all the loose ends in the build.

Those 80's story builds were the best. It's impossible to do a slow boil a la Hogan v. Savage (or even Andre) with today's market saturation of PPV's, You Tube Channels, and Internet News. They have whipped our appetites into an frenzy for change. Which is why CM Punk's year long title reign was such a big deal in recent years. BTW: It was for the IC strap by the Steamboat v. Savage build was pretty solid as well.
@jp38132 жыл бұрын
Slow builds are still possible as secondary or tertiary storylines until the road to WrestleMania brings them to the forefront. The question is whether WWE would even bother, especially since injuries don't guarantee the payoff.
@thelinedrive4 жыл бұрын
I would argue for an honorable mention/ addition in Kurt Angle Vs. Shawn Michaels. With the brand split and the promos back and forth on weekly TV it was the classic we finally get to see these guys touch after three months of trolling each other coming this close to fighting before brand security stepped in. I mean we have Kurt singing HBK’s theme with sensational Cherri.

Excellent choice for number one. I remember watching the episode of Raw when they booked Daniel Bryan's potential main event (him having to beat HHH first in order to be inserted into the actual title match). After seeing that, I immediately went online and bought tickets to Wrestlemania that year, so yeah, that was an effective build. Especially considering I lived 1,000 miles away from the location of Wrestlemania that year.
@yojo78704 жыл бұрын
I bought 3 tickets to 30. Wasn't able to bring two other people with me. A whole bunch of people way at the top had to be moved last Minute and the line was outrageously long. Saw two random dudes and gave them the 2 extra tickets. Pretty good seats. 18 hours from Michigan or something they said. When Bryan won the whole stadium went nuts and everybody started high fiving* and hugging. Odd in hindsight. Those 3 tickets cost as much as one ridiculous ticket for 35.

I've always had a soft spot for the long-term build to Savage-Warrior at WM VII. The Macho King tried--and failed--to get the world title away from Warrior over the previous summer and fall, so in frustration he screwed Warrior over and cost him the belt at the Rumble, leading to the first Career vs. Career Mania match, with both men believably hating each other so much that if they couldn't beat the other, they'd rather retire. The match ending with the return of Miss Elizabeth was icing on the cake.

Kinda wished we would have seen Austin vs Bret Hart on the list somewhere. While it wouldn’t have placed in the top 5 it was still really good. Bret Hart is on a sabbatical after losing the title to Shawn at Mania 12 and Austin wins the King of the Ring that year and starts the Austin 3:16 bad ass persona. Austin begins to trash talk Bret to bring him back for a fight at Survivor series. The match happens and the Bret squeaks out the victory by reversing the Million dollar dream into a pin making Austin obsessed with beating him. Fast forward to the Royal Rumble, Austin is cleaning house in a style that hasn’t been seen since Brock Lesnar in this years Royal Rumble and he is perched up on the turnbuckle awaiting the next entrant when Bret’s music hits and Austin’s eyes grow huge and he practically begins to salivate and they go to war. Austin is eliminated at the end but it goes undetected and he gets back in and screws Bret which is the first of many leading to the Hitman being seen as a complainer. The build to the “I quit” match at Mania 13 is well underway with more salt from Bret after gaining and losing the big belt due to outside interference from Austin. They have the match and it is one of the most perfectly executed double turns in wrestling history.

Great list, but am I crazy for adding Taker/Cena in there? It was a dream match that no one really expected to see anymore, Taker had apparently retired, until Cena hypes it in a throwaway line. So maybe there’s a chance. Then he actually calls Taker out. Great, now let’s wait until next week’s RAW for the match confirmation, right? No, Taker’s nowhere to be seen. Cena keeps calling him out but still no Taker until the very day of the show; the ref says Taker’s here, Cena dresses up; out he comes, we’ll finally see it- ref comes back and says Taker’s not here. Cena leaves- BLACKOUT, it’s Taker- it’s Elias. Cena dumps him; 2nd blackout, NOW it’s Taker; holy crap, it’s happening and then to finish the “WTF” cycle Taker beats Cena in 2 minutes. That was great.

It is largely because it was the first full build I ever experienced as a kid but the build to the mania 2000 fatal four way always stands out for me. You had Foleys 6 month war with triple H, the accidental big show rumble win over the rock. So many moving pieces that just flat out worked the ultimate result may have been the wrong man winning but the build was a beautifully booked meeting of so many different and engrossing stories. Was it #1 all time? No but it was top 5 for me and the story that turned a 9 year old casual into an obsessed fan

I love Adam and it was great to see him return, but this list is lacking some major ones that are far greater than some of what was listed here (and there is a heavy bias towards more recent Manias): - Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 13 (a multi PPV blood feud that resulted in a great match) - Undertaker vs. Kane at Wrestlemania 20 (several months of build that led to the return of deadman Undertaker) - Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage at Wrestlemania 3 (a blood feud plus injury angle the resulted in an all time great match) - Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 24 (several months of retirement teases prior to this supposed one final match) - Undertaker vs. Kane at Wrestlemania 14 (the whole refusing to face his brother storyline) - Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 12 (the contrast in personalities as they build to the iron man match was great) - Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at Wrestlemania 10 (the champ vs. champ build was very unique for the time and unfolded over several months before having a great match) - Virgil vs. Ted DiBiase at Wrestlemania 7 (it wasn't a great match, but you can't deny that it was a long build and the crowd was hot for it)

I remember the build with Macho Man and Hogan. So great, still might be my favorite, but then nostalgia IS a hell of a drug. Excellent list overall!
