Couple surprises for me in the list, but I like it. Personally I'd swap Beckenbauer and Baresi, but overall I think this list was carefully thought out and I can appreciate it. I'd say Alessandro Nesta, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Thiago Silva, and Giorgio Chiellini deserve honorable mentions but I would have a hard time arguing any of them other than Nesta to replace anyone in your list. Beckenbauer over Maldini simply cause Der Kaiser actually won more than he lost. Cannavaro is the 3rd defender to win the Ballon D'or. Beckenbauer twice, and Sammer in 1996. Two mistakes : 1/ Cannavaro was NOT the only defender to win a ballon d’or. Beckenbauer won it twice. 2/ Baresi did NOT “help” Italy win the World Cup in 1982. He didn’t play… he was a substitute.
