Luz Long, who’d enjoyed practicing his English with Jesse Owens as they prepped for the 1936 Olympics, was killed during WWII, leaving behind an infant son. The younger Long remained close friends with Owens until the latter’s death, getting a vivid picture of the father whom he’d never known.

I agree with that quote! I don’t get why some players get so toxic & have bad sportsmanship to the point where they rage over the games the play & sometimes lose at! They clearly need to see this quote, understand it & learn how to have good sportsmanship & not be toxic players!

In February of 2016, there was a series of shootings in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was a very scary night. The next evening, the Kalamazoo Wings hockey team was scheduled to play the Toledo Walleye, a team where there is often a very ugly rivalry amongst the fans. That game began with both teams standing united and intermingled during the National Anthem. After the game, the Walleye auctioned their jerseys and donated the proceeds to the families of the victims. There is a picture of the line of players standing united on the wall at Wings Event Center, where the K Wings play, I get chills every time I walk past it.

Anyone familiar with hockey knows when a team wins the Stanley Cup the captain is first to carry the cup around the rink...knowing this, when the Avalanche won the cup in 2001 Captain Joe Sakic gave up that right & handed the cup to Ray Bourque after the commissioner handed it to him. Bourque raised the Cup for a few moments & tried to hand it back to Sakic, but he refused, insisting Bourque skate a lap with it. This event should've been on this list.

Considering it was Bourque's last season and last crack at winning a championship as a player, it added more emotion to the moment.

In the final minutes of the 1973 college basketball title game in the U.S., three players on Memphis State carried an injured Bill Walton of UCLA to the bench. Walton had just scored 44 points against Memphis State, dashing their hopes of upsetting the Bruins. It was the best act of sportsmanship in college basketball I ever saw.

For several years, my husband competed as an amateur athlete in the Scottish Highland Games, all over Texas. I loved watching and cheering for him, but one of my favorite things about the Games was that almost every competitor would encourage the others. Each wanted to win, of course, but they also enjoyed seeing someone break a record or achieve a new personal best. It was a perfect combination of competition, camaraderie, and kilts. Good sportsmanship raises any game.

Anderson Silva placing his Title Belt and BJJ black belt on the floor and bowing as low as humanly possible at Chael Sonnen's feet after 23 minutes of getting beat up worse than he ever had in his whole career followed by a last minute choke out of Sonnen, was gold. So was Justin Gaethje consoling Khabib Nurmagomedov as soon as he woke up and found the guy who just put him out weeping uncontrollably over the loss of his father and life long fighting coach. Gaethje told him his dad was proud and Khabib just got up, it was brutal and beautiful.

Actually another Nascar one, Homestead 2016. To set the stage, 4 drivers were going for the championship: Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson. Edwards was cruising to the championship until a late caution came out with about 10-15 laps to go. On the restart, Logano lined up right behind Edwards. As they took the green, Logano got a much better restart than Edwards, Edwards tried to block but was too late and spun off Logano's bumper, destroying his car. After he exitted the car, Edwards ran over to Logano's team crew, and basically said "hey, that was a racing incident, no offense taken, go get that win". Ultimately Logano also lost (Johnson ended up getting the championship).

The Mario moment in the honorable mentions pales greatly to March 2, 1993. Lemieux beat Hodgkins Disease, and rushed from his treatment spot in Wexford across the state to the Philadelphia Spectrum. They gave him a 5 minute long standing ovation that delayed the anthems for the player that beat their franchise the most. Nothing but class.

The Nadal one (even though I admire him) shouldn't be on such a list. It was nice of him, but any other would do the same. If you wanted another tennisser you could have added Roddick. Normally a very competitive player. However, when he had matchpoint the ball was called out, which meant he won. However, he corrected the call, proclaiming it was in. Making it so that he did not win the match on that moment.
