ellie KNOWS he is lying...it doesn't really matter he lies to her. this is how i see it. He needs her, that is why he lies...it isn't due to selfishness...it is because he needs her to survive...and Ellie (on some level) knows this...even if she doesn't like it. it's the same thing as what happened with Bonnie in the Walking Dead game...people dsay it is bad to lie to that Leland guy about killing that Dee woman is the cornfield...but Bonnie WOULD do that and not because she wants Leland to herself...but because she is afraid of being alone. fear of being alone make people do stupid things...even lie to people they care about. Joel lied because he needs Ellie.

@@IDyce88 Yes it is selfishness sadly. He takes Ellie for his own when she may be the hope for the future. This is what I love, Joel is technically bad. Most hero are ready to do sacrifices to save the world but Joel doesn't do that and futhermore, Ellie told him that this is what she wanted, he knew it but only thought about what he wanted.

Joel may be blinded by his feelings but he also felt Ellie had a right to decide her life for herself...if Ellie woke up and decided Joel was wrong she could have walked away from him...Joel probably wouldn't have stopped her... but she chose to saty with him because she UNLIKE YOU has a deeper concept and understanding of people. there are two types of liars in the world; people who lie because they don't care about anybody or anything...and people who lie because they are afraid of the consequences...because they are afraid of what will happen if they come clean. Joel is the second one...he isn't selfish...END OF STORY...he is just afraid...which is not a crime. now grow up and stop victimising Joel...

At a certain point of the game, I think it's when they saw the giraffes, Ellie says to Joel something like: "I went on a too long way to give up now" (don't now if that's grammatically correct, I'm not english) when Joel proposes to her to just go back where his brother Tommy is. I know she would be willing to sacrifice herself in hope of creating a vaccine, I guess she can't be mad at Joel when he lies to her because she loves him too, and maybe in the spring chapter she was being distant because she knew she would have to leave him and she might also have struggled between staying with Joel or continuing, because she finally decides to continue. I am sorry but Joel takes back Ellie because now that he can finally feel like a father again he doesn't want to let her go. He saw things at a personal level and couldn't think about the lives she may be able to save with a vaccine. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that he took her back but this is why I love the character of Joel, he is selfish. Remember that you can be selfish without being a bad person.

@@shydreameress264 the fact you call it truth just proves how sad it is...there is no TRUTH in video games...video games create a world for you to perceive your own world especially games that have a very big story base like The Last of Us. the only story that exists is material...one that is shaped by the player...so we can perceive the story to be whatever it is unless cold hard fact says otherwise...and there is no SOLID evidence that contradicts this. fact 1: ellie had a POTENTIAL possible way to cure the virus. fact 2: the fireflies did NOT know if it would or would not work..if you pick up all the audio messages in the hospital and listen to Marlene talk...she says as much...she is taking a 1 in a billion gamble with Ellie's life. based on faith...chance..and stupidity...i don't believe in god and chance and miracles...and if i was living in a world like that neither would you. Fact 3: Joel may have been blinded, there is no denying this...but at least he let Ellie choose...more than that bitch ever did. Fact 4: going walking dead psycho man on the hospital was the most therapeutic thing i've ever done in a long time...u can't save the world on a gamble...u have to be certain before you try something like what u do to Ellie. i have 5 top notch scientists in my family who know about genetics ok...and they all agree with me...even in an apocalypse...that was just a stupid thing to do...and selfish.

The reason "The Last of Us'" ending was a masterpiece is simple: It matches Joels character. "Oh well he could have sacrificed Ellie for the good of planet." Do you really think Joel gives a fuck about the world after all it has done to him? His daughter was killed, not by an infected, not by a Clicker, but by a fucking human being. Tess was bitten because they were attacked by HUMANS leading to her sacrificing herself. Those jackasses in Pittsburgh followed Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Henry's Brother across the river which got the little brother bit and Henry killing himself. All the tragedy that has happened to Joel has been because of human beings. You really think he'd sacrifice the one thing left in the world that he cares about? No. Not for sake of people that caused him so much grief. "I've struggled a long time with survivin', but no matter what you have to find something to fight for." - Joel. Ellie's life is thing that he fights for now and not a damn person is taking her away. That's why the ending was so good. It matches who Joel is as a character.

Tess was bitten because she decided to go on a dangerous mission to get weapons. They were both criminals smuggling weapons And it is bullshit that Joel doesn't give a shit about the world, what about his brother, Maria and his group? He sacrificed the world because he is selfish, if he lost Ellie he would have killed himself and that was it. It does match him as a character, he is the villain of the story, you only take his side because you played as him.

92brunod I can see this point of view as well. I personally don't blame Tess and Joel for becoming criminals. Like I said, Joel turned his back on almost everything when his daughter was kilked. During the game you see who the government's corrupt nature lead to people rebelling against them. Joel's city was no exception to this. Joel only cares about people who he is close to. Tess, his brother and his psedo-daughter: Ellie. Most people do in real life are like that. Your loved ones are most important to you then other people. That does make him selfish but we as a race are selfish. What impacts a person more, the death of a random person or the death of a loved one? You could argue that since the answer is obviously loved one we are all selfish. This game is a lot about humanity as a whole which is why the "sacrifice everything I love" bullshit was not going to happen. Joel is selfish just like the rest of the us. He made an immoral decision but he was never a moral man in the first place. Your points are valid though. I will admit that.

Gregory Rojas Not really, we can't just expect Lee and Clem to make it out for sure. The zombie apocalypse is probably not going to end in that world for a long time. The Last Of Us ending was more of a sequel bait because Joel could've cured everyone if he had accepted to have the fireflies kill Ellie for the cure. Kind of a weird coincidence that Joel manages to find a teenage girl who is immune, reminds him of his daughter, and that he is willing enough to doom humanity just so he could be happy with her. Pretty sweet of him and it's reasonable but still kinda selfish.

Halo 3's ending cutscene was OK, but the story was the worst of the franchise. It was just a lazy/by-the-numbers rehash of the previous two. If it weren't for the fun gameplay I'd probably hate it. Say what you will about 343's games being stupid, but at least they're more original than 3 was. Reach probably had the best story/ending of the franchise, Halo 2's story was great but I know a lot of people hated the ending. Because for some reason Halo fans aren't patient enough to deal with a cliffhanger. I thought it was great though. But the way Reach tied into the beginning of Halo: CE and Noble Six's last stand, it's hard to beat.

My personal favorite video game ending (which some people would disagree with) is the ending of Mother 3. Yes, it is ambiguous, but in a good way. After being revealed that most of the world was destroyed, you can’t just recreate everything, but at most, stop the danger from destroying what’s left, and after you accomplish your goal, there’s not much of an epilogue other then character text on a black screen, which I think adds to the atmosphere. It makes you feel that you’ve already lost a lot, which you have since two of your family members have died and you and the other characters can only hope for things to get better. It’s both sad and atmospheric. Also, the antagonist’s defeat was very satisfying and even somewhat disturbing.
