And their whole relationship. Representing a bi character as loyal to his partner and not being afraid to tell the audience he likes men and women. Unlike some shows that portray it as just experimenting or say the character is sometimes a lesbian sometime straight *cough* orange is the new black *cough* and not acknowledging people can be bi. As well as showing Alec figuring out his sexuality. And showing the two of them as main character and their relationship being something shown in the show often. Showing the two of them working through bumps in the road together. It is a good example of a healthy relationship. And a loving committed relationship between a bi and gay character.

Oh, common. Why add 1. one of the first realistic gay couple in TV history 2. with plenty of screen time 3. from the show that wasn´t on cabel 4. from the show that greatly targeted young vulnerable audience showing them how OK it is to be openly gay 5. with millions of devoted fans who - to this day, 20 years after beggining of the show - still writes to Amber Benson or Allyson H. about how much the show helped them with theirs coming-outs or finding their identity. How is this relevant to the topic? "Ms." Mojo knows best! :-/

I like your list. But there are some other groundbreaking LGBTQ moments on television that should be included. “Queer as Folk,” for instance, was groundbreaking in the 90s when it was the first series to focus on mostly LGBTQ characters portrayed in romantic/sexual situations. And back in the 80s, “Dynasty” was probably the first dramatic series to have a regular gay character - Stephen Carrington. His father even accidentally killed his first lover in a homophobic rage.

How is their relationship groundbreaking? They are cute, don't get me wrong, but they didn't "push any boundary" in terms of television history; I also think that the choice of portray them in the tv series (much more than in the books) was a stunt because the production knew about the great fanbase they had. I'd say that, in comparison, I would have added some tv series more geared to a male target. (I don't know how to explain it because I'm not a native) I think that lgbt portrayal is much more prevalent in tv shows which have a female audience target (see Will and Grace, Glee, Shadowhunter itself), while shows geared towards a male audience (like Sons of Anarchy) don't have as much representation (I don't know why, but I feel like heterosexual men tend to be more homophobic than the female counterpart strangely). In this regard, I would have added to the list tv series like Spartacus (which has a gay storyline in each season) or Black sails (SPOILER: flint, the main character, is bisexual).

you guys really need to expand your lists to non-american shows. i mean norway's skam really changed the world with it's lgbt portrayal in it's third season having 1/5 of the entire country watching it (and pretty much all of scandinavia). the actor who played the leading gay character was even the youngest nominated actor ever (17 years old) for best actor in it's american equivalent emmy awards. the relationship was also the most realistic, healthiest portrayal of a gay couple. but y'all keep it with your english speaking shows bc god forbid any other place in the world has something groundbreaking.

I like Glee like everyone else, but to act like it should be celebrated for having multiple gay/lesbian/bi/trans characters is ignoring the numerous shows that came before 2009 that featured the same archetypes. Hell, All in the Family featured a drag queen as a recurring character until the character's offscreen death to being bashed by a lead pipe by a mugger in a Christmas episode, which caused one of the main characters to question the validity of God. So really adding Glee just because they have multiple characters that are LGBTQ is kinda ignoring all of the shows Primetime and Daytime who preceded them
@MrDougmartin
@MrDougmartin 4 жыл бұрын
There was a movie called That Certain Summer with Martin Sheen and Hal Holbrook which was way before any of these so called ground breakers. Also I remember Dynasty having a ground breaking kiss that every gay club showed on TV screens across the country. Also I think All in the Family's episode with Archie giving a drag queen mouth to mouth was just as ground breaking, if not more than the one mentioned.

I believe the first transgender character was Denise Bryson on Twin Peaks in 1990/91 who was mid transition and played by David Duchovny. When the show returned last year Denise returned for a single episode. It was not a 100% perfect portrayal but she was never a joke either on Twin Peaks.

I love how that shows creator wrote in the phrase "killing all the right people", which she once overhead, to highlight the ignorance and apathy during the early days of the AIDS epidemic.

Also Luke from As The World Turns should be on here for being the first openly gay male main Soap opera character (being the son of arguably the top two main characters) and his relationship with Noah being the first gay storyline to actually GET a storyline rather than just being a background.

Where the hell is Queer as Folk? And if I’m not mistaken, Dawson’s Creek featured the first gay kiss on prime time, and As the World Turns featured the first gay kiss on daytime? There’s so many more you neglected to mention, too many to name here, but one big one that a lot of people mentioned is Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Come on Ms. Mojo, there better be “Another” list coming soon!

I remember that episode of Ellen. I was soooo happy. I dont know why it made me so happy at the time and I never really thought about it till i got older. it was probably because shortly after that i was able to come out and tell my mom that i was bisexual. Sadly my mom wasnt happy about it but my dad had already guessed it and was glad i finally said something. He's always been able to understand that i dont like/love people based on their sex but who they are as a person. Hell i met my Husband through a game and thought he was a woman and i had a huge thing for him. When he finally told me he was a man i was shocked but it still didnt change the fact i fell for him as a person. He even asked me if he was a woman would i stay with him and i said yes. anyway sorry about the life sorry and thanks for the content ^.^

#8 Too bad we had to watch Blaine being the Golden Boy of the show even when he sexually assaulted Kurt in the parking lot of the only gay bar in the area, when he cheated on Kurt the second, the SECOND Kurt wasn't in Lima anymore, who shamed Kurt for something he was ultimately not only doing, but in a much worse fashion and who ultimately were SCARED back together with the equivalent of a Saw trap.

I agree that Queer as Folk should definitely be on this and I also feel that The L Word should be more than just an honourable mention. And personally, as a bisexual, Daryl from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the best bi representation I've seen on TV. He's so happy and proud of his sexuality, 'I'm a both-sexual!'. And 'Getting By' is a TUNE!

@mrnocal

I've read a lot of the comments, and agree with some but disagree with others....as with the "top 10" MsMojo came up with. To me there's a difference between "groundbreaking", important and just nice to see on TV. To me "groundbreaking" signifies opening the doors and being first, no matter how controversial for the time. I'm 52. Many of the comments seem to be from younger people. What was represented on TV when I was a child/teenager was extremely different from what's represented on TV in the last 30 or so years. I'm glad the list included the "All in the Family" episode and Jody Dallas on "Soap". Those were "shocking" at the time and truly groundbreaking. Some other entries on the list, to me, were like "yeah...whatever...seen it, no big whoop". Just my 2 cents.

Klaine!!! Their relationship is the best on Glee, even when I hate some moments bc they were unrealistic but big part of their story is pretty realistic. Their story gave so much hope and courage to a lot of young people to be just the way they are, that is why is the biggest and most important couple on Glee.

I really wish “Queer as Folk” was on here, it has multiple gay characters with a few a straight background characters, it talks about homophobia, coming out, AIDS and HIV, as well as themes of same sex marriage and equality. Not only that but also has well rounded characters who deal with everyday issues and two amazing moms who love their gay sons.
