Thank you. The PTSD also explains why some of the men smoked so much. Was wondering about actors who served since Vietnam. There was an actress, name escapes me, who was in intelligence during ww2. Finally, the co-star in Green Acres was Ava Gabor, Zsa Zsa's sister.

There is a reason these people are called "The Greatest Generation". My father was a son of a Montana dirt farmer who went off to the navy at the start of WW2. He suffered from terrible ptsd, survived a sunken ship in the Pacific, and came home to electric shock treatments and frequent stays in mental hospitals for his service until the mid 60s. He wept when I enlisted in the Marines because he saw so many die at Tarawa and Tinian. Yes, there are so many thousands who deserve that title of The Greatest Generation. God save us from the entitled generations that now follow.

Audie Murphy had a dispute with a neighbour over a dog. In court the neighbour accused Audie Murphy of shooting at him. The Judge asked Murphy "Did you shoot at this man?" Murphy replied "No....if I had shot at him I'd have hit him!" The judge said "Case dismissed!"

My father was about to graduate college when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He joined the Navy and spent the war on an LCI-G. He was at Okinawa and Peleliu and others. He survived kamikaze attacks and storms in the Pacific where the ship was almost swamped. Then he came home and married and was the best dad ever. Greatest Generation and we will not see their like again.

According to many of those who were part of Jimmy Stewarts Flight Crew, his greatest strength was his leadership. No matter how stressful the situation, he maintained a certain calm demeanor & never lost his head. Impressive, under war conditions. All of these men and women that were profiled acted with extreme courage & selflessness. They should all be honored as War Heroes!

Whether James Stewart was REALLY calm under difficult circumstances, or was an accomplished enough actor to be able to CONVINCE everyone that he was calm even when he was far from it, the outcome is the same for those who were there with him. Acting is pooh-poohed in many ways, but the skills of an actor -- vocal control, facial expressions, body language, et cetera -- are useful in all kinds of situations, from letting your kids know you mean business with your disciplinary measures, to maintaining cordial relationships with relatives or neighbors or clients who irritate you, to being able to calm an edgy pet. Just beware the acting master who decides to use his talent for no good. There lies an oft-travelled road to sociopathy!

There is nothing out in the vastness of the internet that can and always will impact me, silence me and make me intently listen other than the hero’s of that “Generation”, that one and only generation. It breaks me at times to hear of the war service and yet their persona has never come forward as if “look here at me”. Indeed when men were real men. God bless this channel for sharing such content that must never ever be forgotten nor swept past overlooked. This video series should be played in every school.

Lee Marvin was shot in the butt too Invalided out for his injuries. The war was still on, He recounted that he was on a bus and an old lady started having a go at him prodding him with a walking cane saying he should be in uniform (he was in civvies) and fighting and why wasnt he? He said it took all his strength to not just get up and drop his pants to show her why not. He also said when lying prone the two parts most vulnerable are the top of the head and the butt If it had been his head they got well he wouldn't be here. Read that article from an interview given by Leatherneck sometime mid 1980s BTW Audie Murphy got shot in the butt too, just a few days after his battlefield commission. Got badly infected too.

While none were Hollywood superstars, they were heroes in my book: my dad and most of my uncles (those that were old enough at the time) served in WW-II...one served in Korea...and my brother was in the service during Vietnam. None of them that saw combat would talk about...which means they saw things that no human being should have ever seen nor experience. My dad continued to serve our community in the Chicago Fire Department and then later as a volunteer (as myself) in a smaller community. They were the Greatest Generation...and thankfully their spirit lives on in enough of us to keep our freedoms! God Bless all of the "bad asses" in your videos. i was working as a bellman at a hotel near harvard square around 1989 and i escorted charles durning to his room. i met a busload of movie stars there, many coming to meet with david mamet ( the untouchables ) for projects. i am not certain that is why durning was there. so, he's a real regular guy and he finds out i'm an irish catholic kid. he tells me the dirtiest priest and nun jokes i've ever heard and this goes on for a half an hour. i'm cryin' from laughing, but he won't let me go. already i loved the guy just from meeting him, but i didn't know of his military service at all. if only i had ! i am a pretty good amateur historian of weimar germany, the nazis, the holocaust, and WW II. i could have talked to him for days, but i didn't know, and also he might not have wished to do so. there was a sadness that followed charles durning that even i could sense. later i learned about his life and i began to understand the melancholy man who made me laugh so i would stay with him. i wish most i could have told him that he was loved for his humanity, as well as his courage and dedication. he was a fine actor, with big parts in personal favorites " the sting " and " tootsie ", but i think i appreciated him most for the appearances on the PBS memorial day programs from washington. he would read and dramatize letters from actual soldiers to home and i would be crying like a baby every time. when he died, i was as sad as if a family member died. ( i was also fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with a WW I doughboy, who showed me all of his pictures and stories as i was working as a census taker. also, i talked at length with a congressional medal of honor winner from WW II, just me and him. i had the honor of shaking the good hand of bob dole, too. i was in awe of all of these guys because i know it is a fair bet that i could never do what they did under hellish pressure and danger. ) BTW, this is a very well done video. you have done your homework and it shows to a now old fart who knows his history.

It is a good list. So many of their stories go deeper. Many returned with wounds. James Doohan returned without a finger which he concealed very well throughout his acting. They were a different breed of people with very few modern analogs. For them, service to country. God bless then all and those who have departed, may their fears and PTSD be abated and may they rest in peace. They are missed.

Great post! Many of these men I didn’t know had served, but your number one pick being Jimmy Stewart is spot on. I had a conversation with Kim Novak one afternoon and I told her I had just finished the book “Jimmy Stewart Bomber Pilot” and that I was a huge admirer of his. She lit up like a candle and went on to tell me that if I wanted someone to admire who would not let me down it would be him. She said that when she worked with him on the movies “Vertigo” and “Bell Book and Candle” he was an absolute perfect gentleman. She said he was endlessly patient with her and really helped coach her in her acting while shooting those movies. She was still pretty inexperienced as an actress at that time and he really helped her a lot. She also mentioned that he never once did or said anything inappropriate to her or any other actress. SHE was also a huge fan of his. This Country needs men like these men on your list again. If they were still around we would not be in the sorry state we currently find ourselves as a nation.

My father was a legit WW2 hero, with a purple heart, Distinguished Flyin Cross and others. He was a C47 pilot, was shot down in the D-Day invasion, gave his life jacket to his severly wounded co-pilot who could not stay afloat with only one. He was also hit on another occaision and managed to bring the plane back safely on one engine and riddled with holes. He rarely spoke of any of this, unless I prodded him about it. he was mustured out on points before the end of the war. Unfotunately, nobody knew of PTSD in those days and there were 10's of thousands like him who dealt with demons the rest of their life. They trully were "The Greatest Generation."

And thank you. I was in the army from 1966 to 1970. I wound up in Augsburg Germany for 3 years and I was very lucky We had guys that had been in Vietnam who had more than 6 months left on their enlistment that wound up in Germany. I think that time gave them time to adjust before going home. RIP to all veterans.

That is an amazing list! I am really surprised by “Boss Hogg” and Charles Durning. They were both fantastic actors! The others I already knew about. They are among my favorite actors. But I have to admit that Charles Bronson, Jimmy Stewart, and James Garner have always been my absolute favorites. One of the facts I love about Charles Bronson was that he made a lot of movies with his wife Jill Ireland, and was by her side when she died from cancer. That was so touching to me. Thanks for sharing this list of great actors, who were also real American heroes.

Honorable Mention: Clark Gable - Talk about already being a star, he was arguably the "king of Hollywood" when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 (not to mention he was 41 years old). MGM let him but only if he went to film some of the missions (and only low risk missions). Instead, Gable actually took the role of gunner and flew many missions (many extremely dangerous) - in one mission, his B-17 was hit hard by flak guns as well as attacked by Luftwaffe fighters. It knocked out one of the engines, 1 crewman died and 2 others were wounded. A piece of flak went right through Gables' boot and a piece narrowly missed his head. That experience didn't stop him from being a gunner on many other missions that MGM never knew about. ....but the men he served with knew. Not to mention, he was Hitler's favorite American Actor and took out a bounty to anyone who brought him Gable, unhurt.

To give today's youth some perspective, Jimmy Stewart serving in WW2 is like Tom Hanks enlisting in Space Force and leading spaceships into heavy combat against ETs. My fav combat story of Gen Stewart: he was leader of a mission over Germany (his squadron operated heavy bombers) and they had just completed the bomb run but were growing disorganized by very heavy flak. Stewart, like everyone else, was stressed to the max but he had to get the squadron back in formation, so he forced himself to have a calm voice as he radioed to the squadron to join back up. He said he deserved an Academy Award because for them to believe he was calm was the best acting he'd ever done.

I feel honored to have been born early enough to have lived around and known this generation. My home town just north of L.A. was a quiet place where a lot of WW2 vets moved to trying to seek peace and quiet in their lives. My grandfather one of the WW2 veterans that sought that quiet out which is how I ended up being born there. Growing up while other kids were playing in the streets, I could be found in the garages of the veterans helping them with their tasks and mowing their lawns and painting their houses helping them redo their roof or even working on their cars and in all honesty I have no idea why. I never even talked about the war with them. I knew they were veterans but it never came up. There was something very different about them and I gravitated to it. When I got older the tug to join the army was so great that I felt I had no choice but to follow in their foot steps. I was in the same barracks as these guys and slept in the same beds they slept in and marched on the same grounds they marched on and the whole time I was in, everyday no matter what I was doing I was thinking of them doing it before me. My grandfather never talked about the war. I never even seen a picture of him in uniform. He served in Gen mark Clarks army. My grandfather was the toughest person I ever knew. There is a deep hole in my heart because of these folks, who's left are in their 90s and passing fast. And Im incredibly angered to see where this country has gone after these people gave so much. Nevvile Brand was always one my favorite actors because he reminded me of the bikers I grew up around. He was great in the movies he was in. My fav was stalag 17. I really hate that most people have no idea about PTSD. A lot of people claim to have it and I know they don't. I have PTSD and it is an absolute nightmare. And what really chaps my hyde are the things people say to me. And I know other vets that have had the same experience because people are so ignorant and have no idea of the effects of PTSD.

When Stewart was interviewed for the Thames TV documentary series "The World at War", he insisted that his Hollywood career not be mentioned. So much more to the Rod Serling story , that created the mind of the Twilight Zone. As I understand it, Rod's unit was low on ammo and food and attempting to escape the island they were on . They were being chased by a significantly larger unit of Japanese and were finally out of food and all supplies. Finally after some time, US Army Air Corp planes parachuted supplies down to them, they were going to survive with those shipments. The soldier in front of Rod was a war time buddy and they had gone thru so much, but the Twilight moment came next. One of the parachute of supplies failed to deploy, the supplies came crashing thru the jungle and killed Rod's buddy. No ones fault, just an accident, but this helped mold the mind we love to watch every News Year on the Twilight Zone marathon.

This is absolutely one incredible video. Thank You Nick. Both of my grandfathers were frontline soldiers. One was super highly decorated for killing over 50 Germans with his Degtyaryov machine gun while both legs were wounded with shrapnel. His fellow soldiers found him unconscious after losing so much blood, with all these dead German soldiers around him. The other grandfather lost a leg, and walked around all his life with a prosthetic. As unpopular to hear this today, they both fought for the Soviet army in WWII, and they were both Jewish. The entire time I knew them, they absolutely refused to talk about WWII. Even though I spent a lot of time with them, everything I learned about them was either from my parents who got it from their neighbors, who knew them when they were younger, or from looking up existing records on them today. It is incredible how much stuff you can find on the internet, even from other countries. Sadly, the greatest heroes out there, are the ones that never talk about themselves. Just one question for the show. Where is Audie Murphy, he was in a movie that played himself, and he did a bunch of westerns, so yes he is an actor.

I really want to address your refusal to recognize Audy Murphy. I agree with 100 percent. In my opinion, any man who profits on his service to focus attention on his heroics is glory hound dismissing all agony and death that got him into Hollywood. They were great role models and were never afraid of anything! Rarely talked about the War and gave me great advise and taught me many skills in my life.❤🙏🇺🇲🎖🏅

I agree with all your choices! My favorites, of course were Jimmy Stewart, Charles Bronson, James Gardner, Eddie Albert, and Charles Durning! That they were all so humble about having served makes me appreciate them even more! God bless them all they deserve their rest! 😢

@@ThisDateThank you for all your videos on these heroic people. I just wanted to correct that it was Eva Gabor that co-starred with Eddie Albert in Green Acres and not her sister Zsa Zsa Gabor. Again, thanks for honoring our heroes and heroines and bringing these stories to those who had no idea on how great they were.

Having seen Charles Durning dance in “Best Little Whorehouse In Texas” it’s hard to believe he had been shot in the legs. Speaking of which: On “Gunsmoke” Chester’s limp was a stage affectation. Matt Dillon (James Arness) had a real limp from being shot in the leg during an amphibious landing in WWII.

I met General Stewart, through my dad, in 1962 when I was a kid at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska. Later, in about 1987 when I was a corporate pilot, I flew our jet from Ocala, Florida to Van Nuys to pick-up Jimmie and Gloria. We flew back to Ocala for a big party and enroute, at 41,000 I let him jump in the left seat and fly the plane for twenty minutes or so. He was so humble, kind, sweet and funny.

Great video,my dad served in World War II in the US Merchant Marine. He was proud of his service. Got to serve in both the Atlantic theater, and the Pacific theater and was Coast Guard trained off the coast of California at Catalina Island. H e got a honorable discharge from the US Coast Guard in 1988 when they finally recognized the Merchant Marine and their service.

You mentioned James Doohan. Mr. Doohan lost the middle finger of one hand while he was fighting his way through Normandy. You can see it for a brief second in the Star Trek episode, "The Enterprise Incident" as he is handling that Romulan cloaking device. God bless all of these brave men and women. I just wish I could've met each of them in real life for ten seconds and said "thank you" to their faces.

There are several Vietnam combat veterans who became actors in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Larry Wilcox (CHIPS) was a Marine. Demond Wilson (Sanford & Son) Army. Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue) Army, Bob Gunton (Shawshank Redemption) Army.

I met DennisFranz at a cigar shop in Santa Barbara years ago when I was stationed at Ventura with the Navys seabees. I was sitting in the lounge and this guy walked in with a veterans hat on, into a room with 1 active and 3 other vets. We all joked about it a bit then just hung out and watched basketball while smoked and had a beer. I saw him a few times after that at the shop, and we chatted a bit about our military time and cigars. Hes a good guy.

My grandfather left a horrifically unhappy home situation at age 17 and enlisted in the Navy. He was on board the U.S.S. Case at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. He continued to serve aboard the Case throughout the war in multiple battles. I found all this out when he died - he would never talk about his time in the war.

Thank you, this was done with heart and respect. My father served in the Navy as a navigator in PBM,s during WW-2. I have always had a great deal of reverence considering the hardship and sacrifice these combatants endured. This led me to my time in the Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. I was lucky and never got shot at. But I did encounter during my military involvement a number of steely eyed killers and understand that they are a bread apart. What I find fascinating is that most often you would never know, often they do not even look the part (reality has a habit of putting central casting to shame). Unfortunately, they so often pay an extreme price and are due our respect and kindness.

cant remember when i've been so moved by a presentation. The way you mix the photos and shots of your narration is a winning combo. We have a pic of Jimmy Stewart and my late mother dancing at an 8th airforce reunion. My father, a right waist gunner in a b-24 knew Stewart as their paths sometimes crossed at bases. It was great to hear my father say that Stewart absolutely earned his generalship and was well liked by the men. This video is frank, uplifting, and American as apple pie.
