My father wasn’t a Hollywood hero but he was my hero. His name is Walter Tabak and he enlisted in the Army at age 17. He was a medic and he lost both his legs in Tunisia I believe in 1946. He spent 2 1/2 years in Walter Reed Hospital learning to walk with prosthetic legs. He worked with Ford Motor Company in developing cars for amputees. He met my mother while in Walter Reed and they married and 3 children. I’m the youngest and I was devastated when he passed away from brain cancer in 1999. I think his story would be an inspiration for many of the young, injured veterans. He lived a good life and found love despite his disability. He worked everyday until he retired early. Thankfully he did retire at 62 because he died when he was 66. He and my mother were together their entire lives. He never complained and to him, being blind would be a worse fate. I was his only daughter and I was so lucky to have him as my father. He taught me that you can overcome anything with faith and the belief in yourself. I wish I knew more about his years, although short, during his time as part of the greatest generation in WW11. Thank you

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm an old retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer (enlisted in 1968) and had the great fortune to serve under -- and be trained by -- many WW2 vets still on active duty as senior enlisted personnel. In addition, while stationed in Hawaii, I was a young sailor present during a few change of command ceremonies presided over by Admiral John McCain, Jr. (the second one of this trio of Navy McCains!), who served as a U.S. submarine commander in WW2 in the Pacific (Admiral Halsey called his dad, another admiral, "my right arm"). And later, while serving in Vietnam (where I was privileged to serve under senior petty officers and WW2 veterans who in some cases had returned to active duty), the overall U.S. commander there was none other than General Creighton Abrams, who as a bad-ass colonel under Patton, led tanks into Bastogne to break the siege of that city on Dec. 26, 1944 -- and thus gave the German High Command irrefutable proof that they had lost any chance of winning the Battle of the Bulge.

Very well written! My Father was a B-29 Flight Engineer (USAAC) stationed on Tinian Island the day the Enola Gay departed for Hiroshima. He also flew missions during the Korean War (USAF) and served in Vietnam as part of the Missouri Air National Guard. He encountered a lot of young men like yourself.

Dr. Logh was General Patton's Adjutant during WWII and my first college professor, my Uncle served under Patton from the beginning of WWII to the end and was his driver at one point. So, Dr. Logh and my Uncle must have known one another, unfortunately, I did not know this fact at the time.

Excellent video! According to actor David Niven's wonderful book about Hollywood, "Bring on the Empty Horses" he was great friends with Clark Gable who said that he wasn't afraid of dying in combat. He was afraid of his plane being hit, bailing out, being captured and Hitler parading him around Germany in a cage like a zoo animal! He was the biggest star in Hollywood at the time after the 1939 release of "Gone With The Wind".

@@ThisDate He was English, of course. Niven actually also served before World War II and was stationed in Malta. He paid his own way back to England from the U.S. to enlist, Churchill thanked him in person. Another to consider: Henry Fonda served in the Navy and had a close call aboard ship. He was called out of his cabin. A few minutes later, a shell hit his cabin, destroying it. Also, Fonda and Jimmy Stewart were best friends and roommates in Hollywood.

Queen Elizabeth II has a special spot for my own family. She turned down Dad's help on the side of the road and was gracious enough to send a message to Dad's unit to thank him for his offer to help. He was a life long Royalist and our family has been in service to King/Queen and country since 1066❤

Fantastic series. There are so many people to cover from WW2 and Korea. I must say though concerning Clark Gable, if anyone thinks there's a "milk run" in a theater of operations, well, they've not been in a theater of operations. Only after the mission is done can it be determined if it was a milk run or not. Keep up the great work!

Hello! These are very good videos honoring these men and women who served. I too love "The Great Escape" movie. I read the book as well. War is hell, and I greatly appreciate the sacrifice so many have made for our country. My great grampa served in the Civil war from New York. He was wounded and never fully healed, and sadly, like many soldiers, he drank to tolerate the pain. My g. uncle served in WWII in the Pacific and was shot out of his ship and rescued from the water. I saw his beautiful anchor tatoo, but he could never talk about the horror he went through. His son was a mechanic in the Vietnam war. He came home, married his sweetheart and had a family. But he could never get over the horrors he saw, and he killed himself. Sadly there will, from time to time, be tyrants that need to be brought down, but I'm so sorry for the trauma that these men and women have to go through. Praise God for their bravery.

Another fabulous in-memoriam for actors who served. Thank TDIH & Mr. Ragone! I don't think there were any oversights in the First or top 10 Badasses of Hollywood, just the realization that there are so many from the GG of Tinseltown who served. It is not surprising there needed to be a Second and possibly Third installment to highlight all these Patriots. As pointed out, you had featured so many included in this compilation in individual Shorts already, but it is fitting they be remembered here together. I was glad Mr. Pleasance was honored in this Par Deux Feature. Sixty combat flight missions is just incredible to contemplate. Then his surviving as a POW on top of all that. Truly legendary. Thanks to all these Heroes and to TDIH for another exception tribute honoring the sacrifice and service of these Patriots. 🫡🇺🇲👍❤️

I have two additions that might not be known to Americans British Actor Esmond Knight. He played Captain James Leach of HMS Prince of Wales in Sink the Bismarck. He had personal experience with Captain Leach. He was on the Bridge of Prince of Wales whe she took a hit in the Battle of the Denmark Strait and was severely wounded. He lost an eye and for a short time they did not know if he would regain his sight in his other eye. Richard Todd. He fought at Pegasus Bridge on D-Day and was part of Major John Howard's glider force. When filming the Longest Day he stepped out of character when he saw they weren't getting a scene right and explained how it really went down. In the movie a Lieutenant reports to Howard. Who was that Lieutenant? Lieutenant Richard Todd. Since you include the OSS there is Morris "Moe" Berg. He was the most popular baseball player of his era who was not a star. A graduate of Princeton, Columbia law and attended the Sorbonne as well. He was a linquist and the Ken Jennings of day. He volunteered for the OSS and among his missions was to get into Rome before it was secure to rescue an Italian nuclear physicist and a trip to Zurich to determine if Werner Heisenberg knew how to build an atomic bomb. If Heisenberg said the wrong words ge was to assassinate him.

Why is Frank Sutton always forgotten? Besides playing Sgt. Carter in Gomer Pyle, he played in the movie "Marty" and others. He served in the U.S. Army. According to Wikipedia, he participated in 14 beach landings and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Truly a forgotten hero that deserves to be remembered.

How could you forget Charles Napier? He deserves to at least be mentioned in the honorable mention category. Not only did he serve his country and become one of THE signature "baddie" character actors in the 70's and 80's. He did movies and did roles on all the popular TV shows of the day, Rockford Files, A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard. Also, he was the nicest guy in person. He loved talking to his fans.

I seem to remember when Hitler found out Clark Gable was flying, he put a bounty on Gables head, instructing his Luftwaffe pilots to shoot down Gables B-17. On his last mission Gable got shot in the foot. After which USAAF top brass forbid him from any further missions. Some believed Gable had a death wish, he was so distraught after losing his soulmate Carole Lombard.

It's impossible to rate these guys and gals on they're contributions because there are so many. Of course I knew of actors in the 40's being involved in the war effort but I never realized how many actor's and actress's from 60's TV and movies contributed but than of course a lot of them were of age at the time, with several lying about they're age to enlist. I am just blown away at hearing of the accomplishments from one's I couldn't imagine being involved. Thank You for bringing us your content. It's amazing to know while growing up in the 60's, 70's, and on into the 80's I was watching so many Hardcore Badasses. A time far away from today's woke Bullshit ! 🇺🇸🪖🕶️🚬

@@ThisDate Read his biography, it's a very interesting story about what he went through during that. The good thing was that his sergeant did as much as he could to not only help him from the racist whites in it, but when finding out that due to the fact due to his being raised in Vuadville, and not really being able to read, etc., taught him how to and not with easy books, but with classics. The best part of it was the ringleader who bullied Sammy had Karma turn on him, as he and the others said Sammy would never amount to anything, etc. When Sammy was invited to dinner at the White House by JFK, when his driver pulled up to the entrance, the rent a guard had to identify who was in the car and Sammy recognized him and said, "don't I know you," and he replied, "no." Here is Sammy, a world renowned entertainer who had appeared before the Queen of England, among many others and having dinner with the president of the United States and he was just a guard.

Suggestion for Part-3. William Hooper, who played the private detective "Paul Drake" in the Perry Mason TV series. He served in WWII, was a member of the newly created Navy Underwater Demolition team (UTD - Team 10), which was the pre-cursor of the Navy SEALs. He was awarded the Bronze Star and other medals during operations in the Pacific. Hopper participated in five amphibious operations, including at the Peleliu and Angaur islands, the Ulithi landing, the invasion of Leyte, and pre-invasion activities in the Lingayen Gulf. As a Navy frogman, Hooper volunteered for service in the creation of the OSS Maritime Unit. Not much is known about what he did, but the OSS-MU's mission statement was to infiltrate/insert agents and supply resistance groups by sea and conduct maritime sabotage. I'd say he qualifies as a Hollywood bad-ass.

Clint Walker ("Cheyenne") joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. That branch of the service was one of the most dangerous, as about four percent of those who served were killed, a higher casualty rate than that of any of the American military services during World War II; ships of the MM that delivered supplies and armed forces personnel to foreign countries were special targets of those enemy torpedoes. Mr. Walker was a genuinely "good guy" onscreen and off.
