Thank you so much. So glad On a Clear Day ranked so high for you. Stolen Tongues is the only book that ever really unsettled me. I also loved Incidents Around the House. I’ll have to check out the rest of your list. Thanks again, Gage

Penpal us one of my all time favorites. I just reread it and Boxes was so just wow. The last line of that chapter got me just like the first time, so did the end. Such an amazing book.

I had to take a break from horror due to a stressful year so I missed out on a bunch of books, but taking notes because we have similar takes.

I have all these theories about We Used to Live Here. I saw people complaining on good reads about unanswered questions but I don’t think they were using their brains ❤

13:13. There's no "e" at the end of Levin. It's not Le-veen. It's Lev-in. EYE-ra LEV-in. Accent on the first syllable for both names.

Incidents Around the House was SO CREEPY! It was probably going to also be my top horror read of 2024 and then I read We Used to Live Here! I loved it so much! I plan to read Looking Glass Sound this year so I'm glad you liked it so much. Definitely looking forward to it. Also On a Clear Day You Can See Block Island sounds so good. Gonna check it out! I hope your 2025 reads are wonderful

My opinion: Penpal is fine. If you're expecting it to be as terrifying as claimed here, you're very likely going to be very disappointed. That's not to say it's bad. The approach to writing it is interesting, but also defangs it a little. I may be one of the few who doesn't think it quite stuck the ending. But it's a good read. We each seek something different and you may think more highly of it. Take care.

I wish I lived closer, so I could come and have a drink at your bar when it opens! I need one after the lousy reading year I've had... I have had so many "meh" reads this year, books that started out interesting, but just fizzled out. And I think a lot of books promised a great story, from the summary, but when I actually read them, the promised story was not really what was on the pages. The authors had interesting ideas, but chose to focus on the most uninteresting aspects of them. So if you do a "most disappointing"-video, I'm all for it, misery loves company :) But I really enjoyed this video too. Sad to report, though, that "Incidents.." was one of my least favorite reads. It started out so strong for me, but then just plummeted, from a solid 4 to a 1... I did not see that coming. There was something about the repetetiveness that drove me crazy, and the constant "daddo". The bathroom-scene was great, though. My favorite read of 2024 was a re-read (which says a lot about my bad luck with books last year) - "Hemmet" (The Home), by Mats Strandberg. Eeerie, sad and gorgeous, I just love it so much, can't recommend it enough!

Sounds like an awesome list! Is Penpal considered extreme horror?

There are a few on your list that I want to read. Looking Glass Sound and Rosemary's Baby were two of my favourite reads in 2023. My favourite read of 2024 was The Fisherman by John Langan. I also really enjoyed All the Fiends Of Hell by Adam Nevill and Crypt of the Moon Spider by Nathan Ballingrud and I read quite a few Robert McCammon books that were really good.

If you liked Stolen Tongues (it was one of my 5 stars this year) then read the prequel that tells Tiwes story - The Church Beneath the Roots which is even more disturbing if you can believe it. They were my top books of last year.

Incidents Around the House and We Used to Live Here were in my top 10 too! So satisfying in different ways. You are actually the first Booktuber I follow to rate Middle of the Night highly... most pan it. Since we have similar tastes (except I ❤Birdbox), I am going to give it a go!

I read _Stolen Tongues._ _It wasn't that great._ It just kept repeating the same old thing and taking forever to get to the point. And, _it wasn't even scary._ I don't know why people go on about it. Plus, I think it was self-published by some low quality printer because half the pages were falling out of my library copy, and I saw videos where other people's copies were misprinted so that the words were too close to the edge of the page and got cut off so that you could see black print when the book is closed and you're looking at the edges. And some chapters were printed _upside down!_ It seemed like the book was homemade. That was my first thought the instant I saw the front cover. It didn't look professional like other books. It was too simplistic. And my instinct was right. I could also tell you of my consternation at the climax but I don't want to give away any spoilers.

I cannot understand how Incidents Around the House is #1 on this list. The mere fact that grown adults are the absolute worst examples of good parenting (the late night monolgues that she hears), the sleeping together when they're wasted, the adult parites she attends, etc., etc. I just couldn't even get past that. The parents are the scariest part of the book. I thought it was terrible writing. Just no... no. What a let down. I would love to know how anyone gets to 5 stars and explains how they got there with these awful parents and the lackluster supposed ghost story.
