Clarification needed. As someone else in the comments pointed out to me. Although yes, Christine had a 5.2 litre engine in the movie within the more than 20 cars of her that were used for some of the driving. The engine seen repairing herself and in the photo used, was the 5.7 litre, 350 Cubic Inch Golden Commando, with 305 hp two 4-barrel carburetors. Future references will try to clarify this better as more than one engine was used in production.
@robv11394 жыл бұрын
As I understand it the Golden Commando was an option at the time, while the 5.2 290 H.P. could be ordered with two (V-800) and four barrel (Dual Fury). All for 1958. (Rob, UK) BTW isn't that a Plymouth Scamp and not a sedan in the brochure shot?
@CycolacFan4 жыл бұрын
@@robv1139 that’s my understanding too, if you had the money - and perhaps a contact at Chrysler or a dealer hungry for a sale - you could effectively fit out any car, even four-door wagons, with the top performance Fury parts. Same with paint colours, if the assembly plant had access to, say, metallic pink paint they’d paint your car that colour if you paid the extra.

I can understand 'Christine' being number one, but I'm so glad 'The Car' popped up at number 2. Yeah, the end scene is pretty cheesy but the film as a whole had some truly terrifying scenes in it: You don't even see The Car first time in Sherriff Wade's garage, but by God it scares the bejesus out of you when you do. Also when it kills Lauren by flying through her house is a masterpiece of editing; the extended silence that follows as the light bulb swings from the ceiling literally leaves you speechless. Such a shame the film was buried under the media surrounding the box office hits of the time, it's a film that thoroughly deserves its cult status and it is in no way a low-budget-looking 'B' movie. So glad it's been released on Blu-Ray!

But as the chase ensued and the speed picked up it took on a whole new image without changing a spot of oil or rust. The Car always looked 'evil-y stylish' to me. In 1977, my mom treated me and my two sisters to a trip to Disneyland with a side-stop at Universal Studios. This was time before all the amusement park rides. It was just a tram ride through the working lot that ended at the center where the animal show and Frankenstein monster makeup demo took place. There was one more show, but I can't remember what it was. But during the tram ride I remember driving by a dirt parking lot and parked along the fence were several recognizable movie and TV cars, just sitting out in the hot sun and all covered with what looked like months worth of dust. One of those cars was Peter Falk's old jalopy from his Columbo series, but a couple of old cop cars away was the Lincoln from The Car, a movie I had just seen and loved (I was 14). And though the tram's tour guide prattled off the sites (I think this was pre-scripts), no mention was made of the Lincoln, though he did point out Columbo's car. I still have the photos I took of both cars with my little rectangular Kodak Instamatic.

Christine takes the spot for me as the most beautiful vehicle on this list, and also the one with the most "personality". The car was an actual character, with emotions and feelings, jealous and angry and possessive, and she was evil and vengeful. The car was actually in love with Arnie, and was savagely protective of him, hunting down his bullies, but of course taking it all too far and going overboard on the evil. And what a beautiful car; nobody makes cars like that anymore, the style, chrome, the finish, the sound. While The Car may have been scarier, Christine was a better film.

"Christine" and "The Car" stand alone from the rest of the genre, and even from each other. Christine was unique in that it digs into almost every nerds experience in school, and the feelings they felt at some form of revenge being taken out on their bully attackers. Christine satisfies that fantasy in a cool and unique way for the nerd, and a painful and horrible way for the bully. The Car is one of those movies that is completely by itself even though it follows the same path as the rest of the genre. The Car takes a much darker road as it digs into the deep seated fears that most refuse to talk about... meeting Satan face to face. When presented with the inevitable nature of sin and the death attached to it, one can only have a view of sheer horror as all of these factors are presented in this one vehicle. It cannot be ignored, it cannot be damaged, it cannot be hurt, it cannot be stopped. The location is even a representation of this as it is a lonely desert town, much like purgatory is viewed, where one has nowhere to hide from their demons and those demons are driving around in a faster car than yours. All the movies on the list are good, don't get me wrong, but Christine is a special picture of a reality where the bully gets his, the nerd gets his day in the sun, and everyone learns a valuable lesson in humility... The Car on the other hand, well, ... everyone has fear, everyone has sin, everyone fears the devil, and no one wants to be faced with their deeds done in dark places or have their secrets exposed. The Car does those things but in a violent, maniacal fashion with no escape, no redemption, and no lesson to be learned. No hope is offered in the end as almost everyone dies, and those that don't are forever changed and will most likely never be the better for it. In all the other movies, including Christine, there was a reason for the action and we never know who's driving the vehicle in question or if there even is a driver. Thats scary... But in The Car, ... we literally have no idea what the reason is and boy oh boy we all know who is driving and what his particular intentions are and that my friends is far more horrifying and is evidenced by this, ... If you hear there is a child molester in your town, you get concerned. If you hear he is in you neighborhood, you feel fear. If you discover he lives on your street, you become terrified... But if you learn he is living next door, and your wife and kids are at his house, ... well my friends that is the epitome of horror. Not knowing is scary. Knowing, and being unable to do anything about it is far more terrible and one must dwell on what mistakes were made that led to such a situation. Of all the movies listed, The Car does just that.

Especially the scene in one of the multiple sequels where two characters broke into a hardware store taking and using merchandise to build weapons, then broke the cash register open, to deposit additional cash to compensate the store owners for what they had taken. Rather than harvest the store owners' cash. I had never seen, nor expected that to occur in any film. That's what I consider to be a decent thing to do! Rather than stealing! Peace!

Several years ago, a strange situation happened. I was driving north on the interstate. It was after midnight and I was "stretching the legs" of my turbocharged 4DSC. Before I could react another vehicle ran up on me. I moved to the slow lane and the other car passed me. It was jet black with dark tinted windows. I was not paying attention to the make and model, but the license plate grabbed my attention. Legally emblazoned on the plate was the word DEMONIC. I managed to keep up running 10 over, but eventually lost sight. Strange encounter.

Don't get me wrong, its good. But it has this 70s cheese to it. And I agree it does look scarier than Christine. But that I think Christine was never meant to really be "Scary" in that sense. Sexy and seductive as was the case in order to make believe a teen would fall in love with her.

Christine still remains the scariest of the cursed cars on the big screen, in my opinion. Scared me in the theaters when it came out. Even after she was crushed and bundled I think she could have come right back if she had wanted. Duel also scared me, as I was a kid when I first saw it on tv during a Saturday afternoon in the early 70's. I had no idea what my sister and I had just watched at the time, but years later it's still a good movie to catch, if you can find it. It was here on KZbin in its entirety some years back.

I think to call The Car so bad it's good is to seriously undersell it. Much of what's in that film is truly scary, right down to the concept itself, that it's the Devil's car. The scene where the car flips and takes out the sheriff's car--in the days when all such stunts had to be done for real--had me and my brother goggle-eyed with amazement. And the driver's-eye-view as the sheriff fires at the windscreen is the perfect mix of visuals and audio. It's a genuinely good movie, if not quite great. And way better than Christine which misses almost everything that made King's book such a page-turner. And you can't have a list of film cars like this without at least mentioning Vanishing Point.

There were actually 6 of cars built for "the car". All but 1 were Lincolns and one Thunderbird was used as well. It's easy to spot in the movie as it's the only one used on screen that had chrome trim around the windshield. George Barris built all 6. They were outfitted with 1\8 inch sheet steel and raised the panels to the top of the door line to simulate the chopped top. It was written that each on screen car weighed in at between 7000 to 8500 pounds after they were built. Barris painted each car with 20 coats of pearl black paint but no clearcoat from what i read. All but 2 cars were destroyed. 1 is in a car museum somewhere and the other is in a private collection.

When the movie Christine was made they had to make many different version of the car for the different scenes of destruction. When they had the US premier of the movie "Christine" they gave away the few remaining cars to audience members in a drawing. Then years later I got a service call (I'm a locksmith) to make replacement keys for a car that was being displayed at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado (next to Rocky Mountain National Park). The Stanley had put on a Steven King symposium the prior week at the Stanley as it was where Mr. King got the idea for the movie the Shining. Christine (the car) was parked directly in front of the Hotel so I had a audience when working on the car. When I first turned on the ignition the radio was cranked up full blaring a old Beetles tune while all the dash lights flickered to life. Like in the movie I thought I was going to killed by the car like a scene in the movie. The staff was so impressed (and relieved) that the lost keys were replaced before the owner returned for the car that they gave me and my girl friend a free room for the night. They gave us the room the Steven King had (I think it was room #238) when he came up with the idea for the movie the Shining. And because it was the end of the tourist season the giant old hotel was empty of guests other than us. It was an epic night as my girl friend was a major Steven King fan. I was fully expecting to wake screaming REDRUM, REDRUM, REDRUM.
