I really cannot fathom how Jiro and Naoko from The Wind Rises are not on this list period let alone Top 3 which they deserve. The love that those two share is incredibly genuine and despite tragic circumstances Jiro fully embraces Naoko. Their love story perfectly illustrates one of the film's major themes being the coexistence of beauty and tragedy. Just because there is tragedy and loss, does not mean there cannot be genuine love and beauty amidst the pain, and that fleeting beauty is something worth fighting for, something worth pursuing.

My guess is it’s because Jiro and Naoko are based on true historical figures, and are not fully original (as in created by the Studio screenwriters) or based on characters from books and other works of fiction - The Wind Rises is the only Ghibli movie where this happens.

I would have to disagree on this one because they say that they don’t care if they’re siblings, they still want to be together: which I find gross, it encourages incest. They do the whole ‘oh we’re not siblings so it’s okay to love each other’ at the end but it doesn’t remove the fact that they still wanted to be together despite the chance of them being brother and sister

I’m Japanese, so I can tell you, when Umi professed her love for shun, she specifically mentioned that she was aware that they couldn’t do anything about it, she just wanted to get it off of her chest. The movie expresses VERY clearly that as soon as they both realized the possibility of being related they tried to distance as much as possible from each other.

I would say that their relationship in general (even just as friends) was something really beautiful to watch. Shun was always trying to help her, was extremely polite and acted like a gentleman towards her. In the scene where they're riding a train to Tokyo and in the boat ride towards the end you can see Shun's arm is somewhat guarding Umi from falling and allowing her to have her personal space as well. The part with the incest though, despite their feelings Shun was determined to protect both their reputations even if it was painful by staying away from Umi - had she not confessed i think things would've stayed that way. It was like he wanted to respect her and didn't want to do anything without her approval.

They were building such an intimate chemistry throughout the whole movie. Umi as the backbone of the family had always sacrificed her own plans to keep things afloat for her Grandmother and siblings. When she meet Shun she begins to see him as an answer to her prayers. When he turns cold toward her it is extremely hurtful. Then when she finds out that they are “related” she is filled with shame and hurt. They basically just went from there and never really talked again and she was left to deal with the sorrow and shame. I could be wrong, but I read the scene at the trolley as Umi trying to reach some form of closure by saying, “I don’t think it was an accident that we met, and while I know that we can never be together, I still care deeply for you and don’t want to lose you.” When her mom tells her about the adoption she breaks down sobbing because it opens the door back up for them to be together. If they were committed to being together regardless, why would she break down sobbing at the news that they weren’t related and go to extreme lengths to go and speak with the sea captain who knew both of their fathers? To me that is confirmation that they had resigned to not be together and then the news that the door was still open led to the dramatic finish. Also, the way the movie ends. They are kind of sweetly but awkwardly standing on the bow of ship quietly. If they had already resigned to be together the end may have been like Whisper of the Heart with a love proclamation. Instead, because of everything that had transpired and the emotional twists, in a weird way it was like they were back to the first stages of the relationship all over again.

For example, in the english dub Umi says, "I'm confused why are you mad at me?" When questioning Shun about being suddenly cold to her. In Japanese, she says, "If you don't like me, just say so." However the movie plays out much the same in both versions. We first learn that Umi and Shun are siblings form this scene (taken from the sub, as a note all the scenes I post are from the sub): Umi: If you don't like me, just say so. Shun: Yuichiro Sawamura. He's my real father. It's like some cheap melodrama. Umi: I don't understand. Shun: Dad told me years ago. I even checked at City Hall. Umi: But then... Shun: We're brother and sister. Umi: What should we do? Shun: We forget whatever it was we felt about each other. We'll just be friends, like before. For a while try to turn off their feelings for each other, however Umi finds that she can't do this: Umi: Shun? Listen, I... Those flags were a message to my dad. I think he sent you to me. That's what I want to believe. I'm in love with you, Shun. Shun: Umi... Umi: Even if we're related, even if you're my brother... my feelings will never change. Shun: I feel the same about you. From this I can understand the misinterpretation that they may be getting into incisal things. It is true Uni admits to be in love with Shun, but there's more to it than that. The reason Umi raises flags everyday is because she's somewhat stuck in the past. She lost her father, and the lost of her father weighs heavily on her. In a earlier scene Umi's grandma illustrates this. Hana: I worry sometimes. Umi: It doesn't feel so lonely with everyone here. Hana: I know. But still... It makes me so sad, watching you raise those flags every day. No one knows how much you miss your father. I hope you find someone wonderful soon. Then you won't need those flags anymore. When Umi says, "Those flags were a message to my bad. I think he sent you to me. That's what I want to believe." She's saying she feels shun was sent to fill the void not having a father has left. Romance is part of it, as she does admit she love him. However, she knows they can't be a couple because they are related (or so they thought). Even when she learns Shun is not related by blood she's doubtful. Umi: Mom? Ryoko: You're up pretty late. Umli: I wanted to ask you something. Ryoko: Ask away, then. I'm wide awake. Sorting through these books woke me up even more. Umi: There's this boy at school. His name is Shun Kazama. He came for the farewell party. I showed him Dad's picture. He had the same photo. He says his real father is Yuichiro Sawamura. Ryoko: This one? Umi: nods Ryoko: I'm afraid this is all a little bit complicated. I told you about how your father and I eloped. You remember, don't you? Our first place was that second-floor apartment. Yuichiro was away a lot. I was pregnant with you and working on my degree. I loved school so much I was determined to do well. (flashback) Yuichi...Yuichiro, whose baby is that? Yuichiro: It's Tachibana's boy. He's ours now. Tachibana was killed in an accident on a repatriation ship. His wife died giving birth. The Bomb (referring to the atomic bomb) killed their relatives.If we don't register him as ours, he'll end up in an orphanage. Ryoko: Yuichiro registered the baby as his son and brought him home. The war had just ended. It was happening everywhere. But I was already pregnant. There was no way I could raise him. Yuichiro's friend lost a child, so we gave the baby up. Is he doing well? Umi: Nods Ryoko: I'm so glad. Your father was so good-hearted. Maybe just a little impulsive. Without his help, I couldn't have finished school. Umi: But what if Shun was really Dad's son? Ryoko: If he was really Yuichiro's son? I'd like to meet him. Does he look like this picture? Umi: Nods, and starts to cry Ryoko: Umi... This scene shows several things. The first is, Umi is doubtful that she and Shun can be together, despite her mother saying they are not related. She continue to have concerns about whether or not they are related. The second thing, her mother mentions that impulse adoptions were happening everywhere after the war, which begs the question how many people are stuck in the same or similar situation as Umi? The third thing is how exactly would this play out in real life? Legally, Umi and shun would be siblings, but not by blood. This adoption lasted for a very short time because in turn someone else adopted Shun. So, are they siblings or not? That's a tough question to answer. I assume because they grew up apart and were never really a true family, not related by blood, and because of the aforementioned other adoption, I feel they would not be classified as siblings. That they are able to date each other as they wish. The fourth things is, this is the second time in the movie we see Umi brake down. She's a strong person how puts up a front of being happy, however, she's bottling her emotions up. Something her grandma points out. The first time she brakes down is in her dream about her mother being home, and her father returning home. Which is symbolic oh her emotional state, she longs for mother to be home and for her father to return to her. The second time is here, when she learns that Shun is not related to her. But why does she brake down? The reason is Shun looks like a lot her father. Another metaphor of Shun filling the hole Umi has in her soul her that her father left. Man this took a long time to type. To conclude, no there's no evidence Umi and Shun willing to do incisal things, quite the opposite. If it turned out they were related they would stay friends despite their feelings for each other. Now of course that's a what if, because that's not how the story goes.

Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki are, and always will be, my life. These couples bring me so much joy, even if some of them aren't exactly romantic since they're still children, but the chemistry is still strong and believable and I can't help remembering when I was younger and beginning to have crushes as well as the relationships I've tried to have and did have. Where are Umi and Shun? They're one of my favorite Ghibli couples, along with Jiro and Naoko, and Shizuku and Seji. Spirited Away is a great movie, but it gets too much attention. There are so many other great Ghibli films which just don't get enough recognition. Chihiro and Haku have a beautiful friendship but should not be so high on this list.

However, they also acknowledged that being related didn't erase their feelings for each other. This doesn't mean they were okay with incest.

When Umi's mom cleared things up and said they were not siblings, Umi still thought they couldn't be together since they were not 100 % sure. And then they went almost out of their way to make sure completely if they were related or not.

I knew Sophie and Howl would be number one. I loved Howl's moving castle, Ponyo, and Spirited away. They're good in my opinion. Oh yeah and also My Neighbor Totoro. Chihiro and Haku Ponyo and Sosuke Howl and Sophie were always my favorite relationships/couple. Studio Ghibli (I don't think I spelt it right..) can really make relationships and couples seem so cute that your heart just makes flips (or is it just me?) Does this comment make sense? San and Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke is my favorite Studio Ghibli couples. A girl raised by wolves and a boy who is finding a cure for his disease caught in a war with the people of Iron Town and the animals of the forest is like Mother Nature vs. Man kind. However, San and Ashitaka's relationship with each other puts them both in different positions, but always true to each other.

One reason I love Ghibli/Miyazaki is how they write relationships: the couples don't feel forced, they actually feel sweet, wholesome and believable without seeing a kiss between them. And even the side non-romantic relationships are so cute. For example, I love how Ponyo showed a positive relationship between Sosuke and the old ladies, his mom and his dad (who let's not forget were in bad terms). I watched around 19 ghibli movies in quarantine it was the best period ever, these movies are just so pure and magical they gave such warm feelings and satisfaction, from the plot to characters to the moral of the story to the drawing style everything is just on point. My favorites are Howl's moving castle, spirited away and whisper of the heart ♥

I’m still currently watching all of the films and I knew that Howl and Sophie were going to be number 1 cause there were so many times in the film where I burst into tears over their relationship, like in the dream sequence when Sophie said she loves him but Howl said it was too late (which was actually shown here) and towards the end of the film when she said that she’s not beautiful or talented but he said that she is, which meant that not only old people can be beautiful too, but she was beautiful on the inside and it was the person she was on the inside and being able to see Howl for who he really was and be able to remind him of that that made her beautiful. It’s like the moral of “Beauty and the Beast”: “beauty is found within”. Doesn’t help that Howl is super cute LOL

Ghibli romance is one of the best parts of their movies, there is nothing corny about falling for someone you’ve been through hell with and I think movies need to do it more often. It really shows how vulnerable and protective characters can be in a way that diminishes their own safety. But what’s important is that it takes time, it should never be too obvious but should still give enough hints that maybe friendship isn’t enough.

Love all of those couples from those Ghibli films, especially Ashitaka and San. I also loved Arren and Therru's blooming romance in "Tales from Earthsea," regardless that Therru started off hating and not trusting Arren at first due to his dark side (From his fear of death and his pursuing shadow from the world's balance collapsing because of Cob obsessed with gaining the forbidden power of eternal life) temporally emerging from within his troubled heart and soul while he rescued her from Cob's slave traders. And by the end of it, she overcame that hatred and distrust when Arren expressed his true personality and even confessed to how his inner dark side forced him to kill his own dad, steal his sword, and run away from Enlad earlier in the film, and then when Cob captured him, Sparrowhawk, and Tenar, Therru, alone, ended up saving all three of them by convincing Arren to overcome his fear of death and his shadow by telling him to face his fears, especially the life given to him by birth that his inner dark side enticed him to fear as well. So, in other words, it wasn't just Sparrowhawk who helped Arren overcome his fears before losing his magic to Cob and then getting captured, it was mostly Therru who helped Arren, and that, in turn, ended up helping him try to save Therru from Cob and then Therru, upon turning into a dragon and killing Cob with her fire breath, ended up saving him from the collapsing damaged tower. (Which they were on) Now that, in my honest opinion, is true love and loyalty for the both of them.

Nahoko and Jiro from Wind Rises are such a precious couple though. Theres was short, but filled with love. My favorite part is when he travels all the way back to Nahoko's house to make sure she's ok.

My favorites - and the best (imo) - couples are definitely, no question or doubt about it, Howl and Sophie from _Howl’s Moving Castle_ and Ashitaka and San from _Princess Mononoke_ - which for me is the absolute best Ghibli movie - with Sheeta and Pazu as an honorable mention. ❤️❤️ One things baffles me, though: I can’t yet fathom how, despite often using Hollywood stars to voice the characters (which should give them some passion), any english-dub version of the Ghibli movies still manages to sound nearly emotionless.
