The USB C to USB A adaptor is not the OTG adaptor. The smaller USB C to micro USB is the OTG adaptor. It is supplied so you can use a charger with a micro USB cable to charge your battery if you are on the go and don't have your charger with you. You can do some amazing things with the USB C to USB A adaptor. I have a Samsung hub that I bought for my G Book 12" that connects with USB C and has a USB A, HDMI, and a USB C port for pass through charging. I can hook up a wireless keyboard and mouse, along with an external monitor.

I have. I actually played a NES emulator game with a USB traditional NES controller, and hubbed it across with a USB to HDMI converter. I was playing Super Mario on three big screen TV's that were connected through a matrix switch, and the audio coming through the sound board. There is ALSO an adapter that you can purchase off Ebay that will convert USB C directly to HDMI.

My understanding is Yes, it must be formatted to FAT32 like an SD card. That is how the phone needs to see it. May also limit file size to 4gb. If you don't want to do it then you may need another external storage device. If you decide to move forward, backup those files on your hard drive to your computer if you got the room and then have the phone format it. Hope this helps
