Clover started growing in my lawn, so I researched how to get rid of it. As a result, I learned that they used to add clover to lawn seed, but people didn't like the mixture. Now, I have a lot of clover in my lawn and I can tell you the bees love it. In fact, I see more bees around the clover then the flowers I have growing. We need to support bees as much as we can, so please let the clover prosper in your lawn. Also, when I mow my lawn, the bees do NOT sting me. Useful gardening guidence as usual. Thanks.

No. I would rather have flowering trees than clovers. Why would people want clovers on lawn? That is not lawn. You call it clover field.

@@caseyxiang Because its pretty, help pollinators, add nitrogen when mowed, resist drought and trampling (for micro-clover), add green, need less mowing, have deep roots so they need less watering and aerate heavy soils.... Simply the best ☘

If it is a non burr producing variety clover is beneficial aesthetically, to pollinators, to the soil and is hardy. Honestly not having clover should be the oddity. I get nice white and crimson flowers from a low growing green plant.

Sir, you have the most sensible and logical gardening content I have come across. You debunk the BS and you present your arguments in a well reasoned manner. You are believable.

I had a carpet of moss under a broad shady oak tree. In summer in the morning it was nice and cool, walking on it barefoot. No moss phobias here.

Got rid of the lawn & replaced it with a wildflower meadow, looks great.

I agree Kenny871, my lawn is sprinkled with clover (the kind that I tied clover flower necklaces as a child) and the bumble bees and honey bees prefer the clover. The bees love certain garden flowers, but clover is the favorite.

We have such high percentage of clay in my area that even aeration has a limited impact. I’ve been slowly adding a top dress of compost in the fall and a little fertilizer here and there, but it dries out in the Summer sun and I end up with some weeds and moss. And we range 100 degrees to -40 during the year. So we have to use hardy seed mixes. The best looking lawns are the ones who dump $2,000 in fertilizer and services on them, and I refuse to spend that much on short term solutions. Any suggestions?

Best thing is compost every year.

I have a Sir Graham DNA certified Zoysia lawn. I cut it at 10mm it is green and healthy. I cut it every 2 days because it grows like mad. I now use PGR and I only mow it once a week. The same amount of PGR on my Sir Walter DNA certified buffalo and only mow it to 10mm every 2 weeks.

These busted myths mean less work for me! I’ve had good success removing moss in my lawn by spreading wood ash instead of line but I confess I don’t know why it works.

May I ask a question? When I re-seed my lawn, should I spread the grass seed and then cover with a layer of 3 mm to 6 mm topsoil? Or, should I add the topsoil to the lawn first, and then spread the grass seed to the topsoil (and watering then)? (Different sources gave different answers. Is it true that the grass seed will germinate better on the top of the topsoil, than inside the topsoil?) Thanks for your help!

You are so right about growing the CORRECT kind of grass. Lawn care is a bit of a racket- here they’ll install a grass that looks great immediately and then you’re condemned to a cycle of water, fertilizer, chemicals, fast growth, mowing and more mowing, compaction, aeration- and then do it all again. But oh yes, they'll do all the work for you- for a fee. I got off the hamster wheel by killing my blue grass lawn and seeding over with native fine-leafed fescues. (I'm in the cold, dry north). At our new house we never installed sprinklers- we mow maybe three times a year, fertilize twice. It looks fabulous. It doesn't get diseases and the weeds are few because we're not watering constantly. It pains me to think of the tens of thousands of $$ I wasted over the course of decades, but at least we’re off the wheel now and it’s better for the environment. It's a win for everybody except the lawn care industry.

Is it able to make a thick lawn? Do you cut short or leave it to grow long?
@DDGLJ
@DDGLJ 11 ай бұрын
@@simd510 It is thick after a couple of years- they're bunch grasses so they need time to fill in. It must be cut a bit longer than bluegrass, so I cut it twice in the spring then once in the fall to tidy up. About 3-4" (second highest or highest setting on my mower). I'm experimenting with some native bluegrass to see if it will fill in, but one advantage of bunch grasses is they don't creep into your planting beds. They grow where the seed lands.

How do we go about letting cool season grass go dormant in the summer? Water a lot less frequently? One concern is the weeds overtaking the dormant grass.

Sta Green from Lowe’s. It’s got iron for a nice dark color. It’s not expensive and works great. Get a good spreader
