Actually the black Diablos is not a subspecies (not technically at least). The black Diablos is a female Diablos when it's in heat, so it makes sense that it's not that different from the original version.

Angel Egel did I miss something, where did she appeared in MHXX? they private her of that title? So now she is considered like the Savage Devilijho, Golden Rajang, Rusted Daora ecc...? Anyway I want to point out a thing, even after her death, her colour remain black, same for B.Gravios, Azure Lao Shang Lung ecc... So I can see why it is considered a subspecies. personally I define it a "temporary subspecies".

I think the reason the Gravios and Basarios are so similar if I remember correctly is that a Gravios is actually just a elder version of the Basarios. Like how the Shagaru is an older version of the Gore Magala

Yes the Basarios is a baby Gravios. As explained in MH for PS2. This also explains why the basarios fails on its fire beam most of the time as it's flame sacs are not developed fully yet. You could almost consider the Basarios a subspecies of the Gravios lol

Black diablos and White Monoblos are more aggressive then their normal counterparts. The gameplay you showed during this segment also contridicts your arguments, as you showed the White Monoblos using it's unique attack in which it holds the ground with it's wings before doing a much faster charge. The video was still overall great.

Yup. White blos gains the 360noscope homing horn charge and I can't remember the new attack in the black diablos but I'm almost sure she got one.

Luis D. González Black Diablos has the Roar+Change combo, Dig and double charge and the tailspin. White blos literally never stops attacking and has the triple charge of death as other two moves i cant quite remember. Red khezu likes to roam in a charged state, spontaneously throws at you homming orbs and its more likely to stun. Plum Daimo has a more agressive variation of the charge, the water spray and its dig pins you. Green Plesioth has 2 (i think) newwater attacks and its more likely to water laser you. Also that dive, roll and hipcheck combo

See, I knew I wasn't crazy. It's been a while since I played MH4U after I reached the last G-crown, but I was pretty sure that some of the monsters he listed actually were different in some way. Especcially the Red Khezu and White Monoblos stood out in my mind as I farmed for their stuff. Thanks for saving my state of mind =P

The subspecies that bothers me the most is the Shrouded Nyrscylla. Not because of it's fight, but because of it's attire. (how the hell does it acquire Khezu hide if it lives in the desert?)

Both the Khezu and the Nerscylla resided in the Volcanic Hollow, so obviously, the Nerscylla would've killed the Khezu (as well as the thousands of hunters who sell their Khezu hides after not needing them after they farmed the Khezu so hard) and... that's about all I got? How did it chance from poison to sleep, and why live in the Dunes? Then again, you did ask for its attire, so you are welcome.

Well ... In the desert there aren't spider webs... So I assume that S.Nerscylla hunts in that area... But live or sometimes came back in another area. Or maybe exist a Khezu variant we still don't know that live somewhere in the desert.

in my opinion. the worst thing a subspecies can do is just be a reskin of the original monster with little to now change. where subspecies and variants like the Ivory Lagiacrus, Glacial Agnaktor, savage Deviljho and Raging Brachydios succeed is that they alter the monsters patterns and capabilities to be different enough to warrant a change of tactics. this is why I find stuff like brute tigrex, red khezu, green plesioth, steel uragaan and green nargacuga don't do it for me. it's kinda a shame that generations made the Ivory Lagiacrus redundant now.

The Ivory lagiacraus was doomed to redundancy. It stayed mostly on land. This only matters when the (regrettably unpopular) water combat mechanic is around.

Historic Duel not in the animal Kingdom. subspecies in MH should change how you approach a familiar monster. something like the brute tigrex, while I enjoy fighting tigrex unlike Blazingkight, the brute tigrex doesn't cause a change in strategy, all it does is add 3 more attacks to the otherwise unchanged fight. Stygian Zinogre and White fatalis, are in my eyes, the perfect subspecies, as they change basically everything about the fight except the model you're looking at in game.

Minor nitpick on the Green Plesioth bit, but it DOES have a new attack... a sweeping water beam underwater. That's it. And a preference for fighting underwater than on land, especially when in rage mode. Also for White Monoblos: It DOES have some new moves to it, mainly the football tackle and the U-turn homing charge. Black Diablos mostly is just more aggressive, hits way harder, and has Tri Diablos's behavior and moves... and that's it. Lastly, Red Khezu's difference is that the electric orbs are spread out more than the normal Khezu's.

Also Red Khezu has a neck stretch attack it exclusively had. Also Plum Daiymo can do the step-back permanently until it hits someone compared to the regular one who stops after a few times and also has longer range on the water beam.

Love brute tigrex, it's pattern is pretty easy to understand, the roaring to me makes him easier if you know we're to stand. I like tigrex to I'm bias towards its pattern. Also I'm a gunlance main is he's no problem to me.

I'd be careful stating so fiercely that some of the subs got '*nothing*' new, because quite frankly - but no offense - you're wrong in every case. Take the Black Diablos, for instance. Off the top of my head, I can name two things it does differently from standard Diablos. First of all, when digging, before coming up to attack, it may cause a tremor, which will make a follow-up attack very hard to avoid if you lack Tremor Res (Hint: ALWAYS BRING TREMOR RES TO THIS FIGHT). Another thing, if I recall correctly, is that it will predict where you're going when it charges at you. It adjusts for the direction you're running in and charge at a slightly altered angle to compensate. To my knowledge, regular Diablos doesn't do this in 3U or 4U. Hell, even the Red Khezu gets at least a single new attack (one where it sends streams of electricity coursing in several horizontal directions) and a shift in its weaknesses, going from a Fire weakness to a Water weakness. You may consider it minor, you're free to, but please don't claim they're identical when they're not. Now for the record, I'm not claiming these are great subspecies, on most of these, I'd agree with you, but they're not devoid of differences from the standard monster species. Only monster I personally really disagree with you on here, is Brute Tigrex. The super roars are the focus of this fight, and it actually changes him from standard Tigrex a fair bit, as the focus by extension is less about relentless charge attacks. In fact, I prefer it over the original Tigrex for that reason.

Personally I found the brute tigrex easier to fight than the normal or molten versions. Because I use gunlance I usually stay as close to the monsters as I can while attacking, which is also how the brute tigrex fights. The other two keep jumping all over the place though. Since they run around all the time it makes them much harder to hunt.

Over all really solid list, I definitely agree with a large majority of the monsters on this list, especially those that are just reskins. I think I'm a little more forgiving of some of them since most of these were introduced in earlier generations, and in Freedom Unite practically EVERY subspecies was just a reskin with SOME having elemental differences. I'm actually a bit surprised that Blue Yian Kut-ku wasn't put on the list.

"Practically". I've played Freedom Unite, with the exception of Copper, Terra, and Emerald, ALMOST every subspecies is a reskin or very close to one. I honestly agree on your stance on the Tigrex and because of that a bit on the Brute Tigrex. Despite this I somehow find the Brute Tigrex a more pleasant fight somehow. Yet I LOATHE fighting the Tigrex. A simple challange isnt enough to like a monster. There is a challange,but then there is being obnoxious. The Tigrex for me falls in the latter. I still cannot fight a Tigrex without carting once yet I can do a B. Tigrex without a cart. I dont know what it is but in general a challange doesnt automatically equate a likeable monster for a lot of people. An example I would give for a challanging battle that I found fun was Zamtrios. It gave me an adrenaline rush in a good way. I wasnt getting the adrenaline rush because I dreaded carting one last time and needing to start the battle over,but because I was being kept on my toes without walking over to being obnoxious like the Tigrex.

I actually have a soft spot for Brute Tigrex because, in 4 Ultimate, it was my mainstay armor set for upper-high rank. Which, considering how long it took me to beat Dalamadur (hunter rank immediately jumped from seven to "One hundred and three!"), I was wearing it for quite a while. So I have some nostalgia for a good set of Brute Tigrex armor with a badass looking hammer to swing. if i remember correctly the description for basarios states that it is an gravios in its "teenager" years... i guess that xplains the ruby basarios hum? the purple gypsceros is actualy a little different from the normal one, the normal will signal the flash move by sparking its beak 3 times, the purple will either do that but only 1-2 times, or just save it and use it later without signalying it. the bk diablos... idk if it has any difference from the normal one, but the white monoblos is WAY more agresive than the normal, i almost never die to the normal one, but the white is so agresive that it can actualy kill me once or twice...

Red Khezu has a few differences actually. Its weakness is water instead of fire. And it has several new attacks and is more prone to electrical attacks.

the thing about the gravi, plesi, khezu, and blos subs are they go back to MAHDI and because the mini disk and system had more limits they could only do so much to them so color and buffs where about it them when brought over to newer games they just didn't bother to add more least that's what i think happened

I have a subspeices to improve the Basarios. The Mine Basarios. It has no greens on its skin and it has many different gems and minerals in its skin. It can shed those and mine them for materials. And each mineral has elemental properties. For example:Saphire has water while Amber and Topaz will have fire.

I think the reason why a lot of people hate the Tigrex is because he requires such a different playing style. You simple can't just hug up on his groin and wail away. You HAVE to keep your distance, attacking only when it leaves an opening (which it does quite frequently).

Red khezu has 2 attacks more off the top of my head. Speaking of head it can extend its neck so much further than the original and it can also walk and give out electric shock at the same time

I've been playing since the very beginning of the series, and I personally feel like the games are at their best when the roster isn't padded out by subspecies. I personally found Tri really refreshing after dealing with the incredibly bloated roster in Unite. No Capcom, I don't want to fight like 9 different difficulties of Rathalos (red, blue, and silver in low, high, and g rank). It really captured the same awe of the original for me. I was exploring a brand new land populated by tons of new monsters (and a few familiar faces). Then 3U came along. It added the monsters from P3rd (the only Japanese Monster Hunter I've played) and oh my god Brachydios is my favorite monster ever! But then it pissed me off by saying "Oh hey, so now there's palette swaps of everything!" Obviously I love them all, but I would rather they focus on making all of the monsters (because a lot of different monsters are a great thing) engaging, rather than adding palette swaps with a gimmick like paralysis instead of poison or lives in the cold place instead of the hot place.

White Monoblos actually does have a few new attacks, and these make it much harder than the original. Black Diablos though... It's literally nothing but a recolour. Red Khezu also has new attacks, but you won't notice them unless you're paying attention (which not a lot of people do when it comes to a monster like the Khezu).

Plum Daimyo Hermitaur moves in circular motions to readjust its attacks, instead of sideways like the standard. Not a game changing difference, but it makes it minorly different to fight. Red Khezu fires lightning bombs that inflict paralysis while on the ground and its triple rolling thunder breath attack has a wider spread than the standard white Khezu, which means you have to dodge it differently. Ruby Basarios has a new unique attack where it shakes the rubies off its back. As these are subspecies of gen 1 and 2 monsters, the biggest game changers they can get are what looks like the laziest, but honestly, giving a monster an entirely new model and a new attack that uses unique animations and models is a lot more interesting than a monster that is recoloured and has a few numbers changed (elemental weaknesses and hitzones). It also takes a hell of a lot more effort from the developers to make ruby basarios than it does to make, say, purple gypceros. Monoblos, Diablos, Black Monoblos, White Diablos and Apex Diablos all share the same moveset, but divvy it up differently for each member of the species. I have not fought or cared to fight each monster enough to note the differences. What I know for certain is Black Diablos sometimes spins when she jumps out of the ground. The real worst subspecies is Azure Rathian. It's not only one of 5 recoloured subspecies of Rathian, but its moveset is identical to the Red Rathian and I don't think its behaviour is even any different, it might have different hitzones?

Honestly, I kinda have to agree with you on the Black Gravios bit - that flame cloud attack can suck it for all I care. But I've got an odd love for the Gravios species as a whole, so I kinda have to give it a pass. As for the Red Khezu, I'm in full agreement. I mean, why NOT a different element? Seeing a Khezu that uses Fire or Dragon element attacks would be a nice touch. The only difference I ever saw was that there was a wider spread in it's tri-electric-sphere attack, which ironically made it easier to avoid. I am honestly surprised that the Azure Rathalos or Pink Rathian didn't make it on the list, though.

The difference between Gypceros and Purple Gypceros is the coloration of their materials. Gypceros Materials are Grayish Blue while Purple Gypceros Materials are Violet.

If they gave the Red Khezu moves to go with its leech-like visuals, like a vampiric Khezu, it could be way more interesting than the normal AoE-shock-spamming Khezu. Think about it: The normal Khezu is flabby and white, right? So what if a Khezu decides to drink a huge amount of blood on a daily basis, like a leech-wyvern? It could possibly turn red. Also, maybe it could be way more active, taking more oxygen in through its skin, letting it appear red and being way more active, quick and aggressive.

To be fair, most of the monsters on this list were made back when subspecies were nothing but stronger recolored versions of a monster with some new attacks or slight differences in appearance or a believable habitat or habit change. And honestly, I kind of preferred that. Thats what a subspecies in a believable universe should be. There's a reason we don't have desert polar bears, and why I think the sand barioth was a dumb idea. Its so different it may as well be a new creature entirely. But that's just me.

Actually, the difference between the green and normal plesioth is that it has 2x the attack, but half the health. So you'll be in hell fighting it, but you'll never be fighting it for very long. Also, it prefers to go on land if you wait for it.

so you say that Black Diablos and White Monoblos have no new attacks HA no White Monoblos can turn while charging and has a new attack where it ramps up like a bull before charging and Black Diablos has a new dig charge where it digs underground before launching at the hunter and when enraged, charges when surfaced and it also has an attack where it fakes a taunt before charging (yes regular Diablos can do some of these in three ultimate but not the fake taunt, and this isn't the case in four ultimate so my point still stands) also regarding your segment on plumb Daimyo Hermitaur you have to keep in mind that subspecies didn't get that many changes in the earlier generations the most they would get is a colour swap and a few new or altered attacks so you might be asking for a little too much given the standards of the time, that is still no excuse for green Plesioth or Purple Gypceros though. and i will say that rust Duramboros, ruby Basarios and green Nargacuga have no excuse as the third generation is when subspecies began to have more differences also brute Tigrex isn't just a faster and more aggressive Tigrex it actually focuses more on its roar attacks,

Black diablos actually uses more digging attacks and can delay the hits of their attacks a little more than the normal diablos

There is a difference between monoblos and white monoblos. White mono can only be found in expeditions making it rarer and a pain in the ass to get materials for, but it brings excitement when you look at that shining expedition badge on your map and see a white mono awaiting its death. Btw, Rathalos armor isn't that good for insect glaive, in my opinion. Tenderizer is good, I think it has that one atleast...

About the gameplay I agree with you. But for the the Diablos and Monoblos... did you consider the lore? At leat they have reasons for their colours (except many other subspecies like Red Khezu, Blue Yan Kut Ku ecc...) Black Diablos is a female in her heat; while the White Monoblos well... It is one of the few subspecies that make sense... It is an albin. Anyway just my opinion ;)

whenever I see a Gypceros I always question what is the point of this monster, it has an annoying fight, outclassed weapons and armor, and I rarely hunt it for anything ever. so again I must ask why do Gypceroses in general exist?

red khezu has differences its more aggressive, it has a electric charge attack that has now way to predict unlike the white version that does have a way to predict, its AOE electric charge is larger

No. 1 is Blue Yian Kut Ku right? Hm, but it IS more aggressive, and the Red symbolice Blood. I think hes one of the more interesting Subspecies.

Red Khezu actually has many variations with it's lightning attacks, and back in FU it was much stronger and had more health
