Wow, I remember when line rider became popular I was still in primary school. It was very fun to mess around with at the time, and back then even the most impressive tracks of that time cannot compare to what you showed us here. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine stumbling upon Line Rider again, which to be honest I had completely forgotten about until recently, and then finding out how the community is still going strong and has evolved and developed so many techniques that must have been deemed impossible some years ago. Furthermore, It's amazing how your reviews, even if they are for a flash game which I remember as a silly time waster way back when, take the content seriously. You do not shy away from passionately talking about the unique technical and artistic merit that each track has and I think that made is very enjoyable to listen to you talk over them. I dunno, it's just really cool!

I had no idea that Line Rider was still a thing or that it had developed into some sort of artsy animation made to be synchronised to music. Hearing all the jargon is pretty fascinating and seeing what people are able to do with the same systems that I used when I was playing this in high school more than ten years ago, trying to get the guy to do a simple flip or a loop, is utterly mind-blowing

@andybaldman7 жыл бұрын
Ha. Thanks for responding. I knew of LR long ago, but had no idea there has been a scene of folks doing this with it. Anyway, I realize some of these can be inferred, but it would be nice if there's a dictionary somewhere: Quirk, Stacks, Gravity wells, Flings, Manuals, Frame baselines, Cramuel(?) stops (5:24), Cannons, Blue manuals, Manual recycles.
@LineRiderReview7 жыл бұрын
Manual Balancing Bosh on a line on the front of the sled (nose manual) or back of the sled (tail manual). E.g. 1:25 is a nose manual Manual Recycle Using the same line for more than one manual. A difficult thing to do because if you affect the first pass-through it screws up the second pass-through. E.g. 7:57-8:17 is a very impressive trick. Blue Manuals Typically, manuals utilize acceleration lines (red lines) to correct the balance of Bosh. Blue manuals achieve this using only the angle of the curve, thus they are more difficult than typical “bled” (blue and red) manuals. All the manuals in Miniature in Blue (#5) are blue. Gravity Well A glitch in the Line Rider physics engine, where a one-sided line drawn with the collision side facing "away" from Bosh causes part of Bosh to be "pulled" towards the line. The term was coined by anomaly76 in 2007. Nearly all of these tracks contain gravity wells. Here's a tutorial made by a quirker: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4mTgmmfjKeVjdE Quirk A genre of track (popular among players, not very popular among casual viewers) with a focus on violent movement and intricate tricks exploiting glitches in the Line Rider physics engine, often utilizing the gravity well glitch. Typically prioritizes difficulty and/or movement over accessibility and/or aesthetic. I wrote about this on Twitter the other day: twitter.com/baharv89/status/920768861116313600 Frame-Based Lines Line Rider tracks run at 40fps. In newer versions you can pause on specific frames or even make a track one frame at a time. Frame-based lines are, broadly, lines that affect Bosh (or appear in the same place on screen) every frame (or ever x number of frames) Rigamorits (#9) has these in spades. Fling/Chain A string of gravity wells that affect a specific part of Bosh every frame (usually a chain) or every other frame (usually a fling) that causes Bosh to speed up (usually a fling) or change direction quickly (usually a chain). For example, a hand fling pulls his hand every other frame and causes Bosh to gain speed, "flinging" him. Also coined by anomaly76 in 2007. Light Fantastic (#10) has these in spades. Kramual It is possible to ram Bosh into one or more perfectly horizontal or vertical lines in such a way that the physics engine gives every part of him and his sled the same X (vertical lines) or Y (horizontal lines) coordinate value. This causes a “kramual lock” where it looks like Bosh’s face is flattened into his sled, and in which he will not rotate. Bosh is still on his sled though - affecting one part of him can pop him out of the kramual and he can continue on with the track. A good simple example is at 11:25. Kramual Stop While Bosh is in this position, perfectly horizontal and perfectly vertical lines can affect him in any way without him falling off the sled, making it it possible to bring him to a stop him virtually instantly from virtually any speed. A good example is at 5:15. Kramual Cannon Not only can he be instantaneously stopped, but he can also be accelerated from a virtual standstill to an extremely high speed using an extreme variation on the gravity well glitch. A good example is at 5:17 You know what, now I REALLY want to make another video where I explain this terminology stuff to everyone haha. Maybe I can do that this weekend.

We met at the coffee shop. She was lovely. We talked about ourselves for a bit. She told me about her classes. Her hobbies. Her dreams. I told her about my Line Rider channel on KZbin. She seemed so attentive. I just kept opening up. Whenever I talked about anti-accessibility quirkers, she nodded. I told her all about kramual stops. She cocked her head slightly and said, "Uh huh." I knew I was in. Finally I would be able to role play in that Bosh costume. I would have to talk her into the sled, though. She got up to use the bathroom, and I said a small prayer of thanks to Bosh for all his gifts. I waited eagerly for her to come back so I could tell her more about my next big project track I was working on. I didn't even notice the squealing tires in the parking lot. I waited for five minutes. Ten minutes. After fifteen minutes, I knew she had betrayed me. Swearing an oath of vengeance to Bosh, I stood atop the table and rent my shirt in anguish. I ran, shirtless, tears streaming down my face, into the parking lot. I hopped on my sled and prayed to Bosh that lines take me home. They never took me home.

Man I remember that when Line Rider was something I played and watched, you made a smooth curve by taking straight line after straight line and lining them up so that they sort of meet up in the middle, one just a tiny big difference in degree than the other, and so on, until the curve was smooth enough. And now there are programs for it? Haha, man I'm only 24 but I feel really old xD Was a different era when I was playing the game.

Man, the nostalgia ! I remember playing Line Rider when I was a child, it’s really interesting to see the ways in which it’s been used since then to create such amazing and captivating tracks ! There’s potential to create art in everything and I’m glad to see that even something as simple as a flash game about a little guy with a scarf riding a sled was used in such a positive way. Anyway, the tracks you showed were really cool and I loved the way you analyzed them. I don’t know what all these people saying you should shut up are talking about. IMO it’s more interesting to hear someone who actually knows what he’s talking about point out the pros and cons of the tracks. It makes it clearer how complex the tracks were to make, especially to people like me who don’t really know anything about “pro” Line Rider techniques. It kinda brings out the impressiveness of the whole thing. Great video, man, thanks for reminding me about this silly game from my childhood 😁

Hey, I don't care what the rest of the comments tell ya' mate Talk all you want, you've given a critical voice to something I would never even have thought deserved one. I think this is about how the critic's voice is used. The critic in this video puts a lot of focus on personal opinion, which I think feels uncomfortable because it is delivered so blandly and emotionlessly while much of the language is strongly worded and provocative. Rather than using more of their voice to contextualize the art and give space to it, the critic puts more emphasis on the relative import of pieces, which is subjective and fleeting pursuit. Meanwhile the art is not extensively contextualized or showcased. This is a common thing for intellectuals to do and it can take away space in a community which would otherwise be devoted to celebrating and exploring art in a more nuanced fashion.
