Can someone explain the lingo here to me? I've only recently gotten into these kinds of videos and started playing melee again. Specifically, "upsets" and "taking the set" and "taking a game off of someone" (assuming the last two aren't the same thing).

@@hypnotoad28 I'm new to the community too but I know an upset is when someone wins against an opponent that is considered to be a lot better; a set is usually best 2 out of 3 or best 3 out of 5 and taking the set would be if you win that series. Taking a game is just winning one match but still losing the overall set (If you win the first game but then lose the next two in the best 2 out of 3 series, you would have taken a game but lost the set) Hopefully this made sense :)

@@hypnotoad28 Upsets are when someone who is considered to be nowhere near as good as someone else beats them. Or, two people who are near equals match and one person plays a character who is significantly worse and wins. You can find those here in this video. A game is one round where each player has 4 stocks. A set is the number of games it takes to win. In other words, a match. In competitive melee most sets are best of 3 games. So, in order to win a set you must win 2 games. But in semis and finals and stuff often times they're best of 5 sets. So, in order to win the set you must win 3 games. Taking the set means winning the set. Taking a game off someone means just winning one of the games in the set.

this folk tale needs to be squashed a bit imo. i've been following isai since 2008 through his youtube vids and am a 64 player, and while isai was undeniably the best in the world at one point, people (the meta) have surpassed him in terms of pure technical skill, or they just play smarter/safer (he takes a lot of risks, whether it's for fun or because he is adapting) and beat him. even when he makes it to semi's or finals, it's almost always through loser's bracket. if u watch him play the top dogs from japan in this year's footage for SSC, u can tell he is trying his best due to the respect he has for japanese ppl. so unfortunately, isai has been outclassed at both games. :( i also think he lacks practice/preparation. the guy only attends a select few tournies per year - u rarely see him around unless it's local-ish or there's a shitload of japanese ppl competing. however, if we're talking about pure mastery of every single character in the game (64) and the ability to produce upsets with shit characters just like the ones in this video, then isai is definitely still in a league of his own and untouchable (for now).
