Oh my gosh THANK YOU SO MUCH for mentioning the Toad Brick thing. It's probably one of the most believed Mario myths on the internet. When if they would just read the manual themselves, they'd know the truth! And the fact they were also turned into stones and _plants,_ which already existed, means that Bowser transformed them into stuff that was part of the natural scenery. Someone had most likely already placed all of those blocks beforehand. It's just that the brick blocks with power-ups weren't and are instead transformed Toads! And furthermore, the whole plot of the game is that Peach is the only one that can break Bowser's curse... When you rescue her at the end of the game, wouldn't she have gone and broken it? All the Toads that were transformed are no longer transformed! I feel like that should be common sense! Yet a handful of people think every brick block in future games are the same Toads that were transformed in the original game.

A misconception that I’ve definitely seen is that the thing at the top of a Toad’s head is a hat. People believe that because it was shown to be a hat in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, but that’s a non-canon cartoon and, if I’m not mistaken, the only time that it’s shown to be a hat. A loading screen in Super Mario Bros. Wonder even directly states that it’s not a hat, but instead part of their head. That might seem weird at first until you remember that Toads are literally mushroom people.

In recent Mario games I feel like they’re visually implying that a Toad’s cap is their hair, as you see they put hats on top of their caps and Toadette’s braids are part of her cap too. I wouldn’t blame people for being confused though, as both Mario RPG and the early Paper Mario games had toads with hair sticking out underneath or out of their caps; either the character designers of those games weren’t aware of what the caps were either, or the decision to have the caps be an extension of the body/hair-like was a more recent choice.

This was a great video! I appreciated the fact that you cited such high-quality sources. One fake fact i've heard a lot is that the Koopalings are "based on" the design team who made SMB3. This doesn't really make much intuitive sense, since the Koopa kids are these wild punk rock characters and one is a girl, and they bear no resemblance to humans at all, let along video game programmers. The origin of this comes from the Nintendo Power "Mario Mania" guide, in which Miyamoto makes a comment that seems to me to be obviously clumsily translated. My read is that he seems to be saying the SMB3 design team each designed their own koopa kid, which would explain why they don't really "match."

In my opinion, just because Larry was restricted to just commercials, doesn't make his impact on Mario's voice evolution less important. Miyamoto did say that Yoshi's Island was changed from prerendered 3D sprites to hand drawn to contrast it with DKC, but not because he didn't like it. And another widespread Koopaling Name misconception to add: Ludwig von Koopa is (certainly due to the unique hairstyle) named after Ludwig von Beethoven. Problem: The famous composer with the unmistakable hairstyle was named Ludwig _van_ Beethoven. Ludwig von Beethoven also existed and was also important in music yes, but he was a Kapellmeister (Conducter, Head of the Ensemble and Administrator of their Orchestral Building in one person) in Vienna. He wasn't writing music (at least not as his main profession) and most certainly didn't do so in Hamburg. That was Ludwig van Beethoven's thing. And yes, they were related van Beethoven was von Beethoven's Grandson. He legally changed his name to be not confused with his Grandpa anymore. Didn't quite work out, did it?

The book iirc explained it as a no brainer at the time to grant the license. @@KingLaneCreations I heard the other reason Nintendo didn’t have the rights to a Popeye Arcade game before changing to Donkey Kong was because most companies prior to Donkey Kong’s release thought video games are a dying fad, even before the video game crash of 1983. It’s possible that both development issues and licensing neglect by superstition are the reasons why Donkey Kong became what it is today, especially when you take into consideration that Nintendo was about to go bankrupt over Radar-Scope’s marketing failure in America. If you want a misconception that’s hard to believe, try looking up stuff about Cranky Kong, Donkey Kong and how Rareware couldn’t make up their minds on who they are in the family tree, or whether or not Modern DK is DK Jr; which I don’t believe, because Cranky’s own bias towards modern game development (especially when breaking the 4th wall within DKC) would imply he’s not the same DK featured in the 1994 Game Boy game released a few months prior to DKC, but the Modern DK we know today is likely the same DK featured in Donkey Kong ‘94 (especially since DK Jr appeared alongside Modern DK in Mario Tennis N64), and that the GBA instruction manual to Mario vs. Donkey Kong said “Looks like Donkey Kong is up to his old tricks again!”, implying that this DK is the same DK from it’s spiritual prequel, which makes sense when you realize Miyamoto was the guy suggesting to give DK a necktie (which Cranky Kong never wore), and that DK’94 was the first game to feature the necktie-wearing DK (albeit in Miyamoto’s initial design rather than Rareware’s finalized look).

you forget some that are the biggest misconceptions like the big one that is mario and Luigi in the games are Italian's to which they are not like............. at all because it's super pretty clear that Mario's world in the games is very different from ours but are inspired by real life countries there are past games like the educational ones that had it but it's pretty clear they are not canon by all means

The original booklet for Mario Bros. On the NES (not Super Mario Bros, the arcade game) stated that it took place in the sewers of New York. It didn't specifically say beyond that. The reason Mario was assumed to be Italian, or more accurately Italian American, is because New York has a large number of people of Italian heritage. Most people working on the tie in media interpreted that as a gruff Brooklyn type thing (even though what borough is never specified), while some went with a more cartoony accent.

I think they can be considered "Italian" in a sort of meta sense, kind of like how the character Garnet from Steven Universe is "black" despite being from another planet. Though you are correct that they aren't literally Italian since they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, as seen in Yoshi's Island. I do think it's possible that they have heritage from an Italy-esque place in the Mario world though, such as Isle Delfino or the Luncheon Kingdom.

From what I’ve heard over the years the license rumor stems from the creator of Popeye stating that video games were a fad and thus he wouldn’t license popeye to Nintendo for the game. After he saw the success of donkey Kong he changed his mind. This is what I heard long before the internet and I’ve seen several videos on KZbin that also claim that. I’m not saying you’re wrong but I’m not saying you’re right either because I just want more definitive proof and not opinion before I change my belief I’ve had since the early 90’s.

I thought the information on Gunpei Yokoi's deposition was enough definitive proof? Also E. C. Segar, Popeye's creator, had passed away decades before Donkey Kong was in development.

I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong. The Donkey Kong cereal came out in late 1982, which was probably around the same time the commercials were airing. Meanwhile, the Donkey Kong Goes Home album was released in 1983.

#8 Ooooooooh, you missed it by this much. While you are correct about the DKC thing, he does actively hate story. He may _claim_ he doesn't hate it, but just about every action proves otherwise. Even if you believe that he did like story, actually, and everyone was exaggerating; it wouldn't be "pure fabrication." The many reasons someone would think that are some of the best documented things in gaming history. If you truly thought this was wrong, you'd do a point-by-point debunking video of Arlo's video about it.
@KingLaneCreations8 ай бұрын
The reason I haven't made a point-by-point debunking video yet is because someone already did. SuperMarioT made two excellent videos about why he thinks Miyamoto doesn't dislike story, and I feel like the evidence he shows makes much more sense. Here's a link to watch both videos. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnfUmq2gbbyBgMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZTNdXV7f6mGhqM

@@KingLaneCreations Oh... one of _those,_ I see. That is not a "point-by-point debunking video" firstly, because it came out _before_ Arlo's video (by over an entire month). And secondly, because Arlo's video literally addresses _every. single. point. made. in. that. video._ It is actually a video made in response to how bad and misleading of a video that was. You literally have none no research on this topic. Say something, _anything_ that gives the impression that you've watched Arlo's video, before trying to continue this discussion.
