I first watched this movie when I was 10 years old, I watched it once more four times in a row and cried the second and third. The first time I had cried in a movie. I totally agree with you. My husband proposed to me at a picnic next to a river during peak foliage season (we live in New England), a week after my 18th birthday. It was just him and me (and the critters who lived in the woods). He had a song by my favorite band playing on the car stereo when he popped the question and, when I said yes, he walked over to the river, pulled on a wire, and attached to the wire was a bottle of champagne. We're celebrating our 33rd anniversary in September.

My husband proposed to me at my house where he surprised me with a visit (we lived several hours apart at the time) but while I thought no one was there but us, in reality everyone was waiting in the other room. To me it was the perfect proposal because it was just us in that moment and yet by everyone hiding away in the other room it was still able to be shared with those closest to us. Later when I asked him if he was nervous to ask with others nearby he said no because he was confident he already knew the answer. I think that is the case in a lot of similar situations, the couple has reached a place where they know each other so deeply they both already know what the answer will be.

Yep, the string proposal in Step Mom is absolutely up there with the best movie proposals of all time. I would've been disappointed to not see it on this list. Gives me chills every time I watch it. And it definitely helps that Ed Harris is damn sexy, lol. I actually prefer seeing it done while the couple are like brushing their teeth in the bathroom or something. In my opinion, there's nothing more romantic than when the love of your life proposes when you still have just-rolled-out-of-bed hair, while still wearing the t-shirt with holes in it you wore to bed the night before and in the middle of getting rid of your morning breath in your messy bathroom with no makeup on and still rubbing the sleep out of your eye, because it's just not possible for him to wait any longer, and because it's just for the two of you and no one else in that moment. Rather than the classic cheesy way of doing it in some upscale restaurant so you can have an audience. But that's just me...
