The Last Kingdom is the type of a show that in the first is just meh. But when you put a little bit of time into it you'll surely get addicted. It keeps getting better in every season. My most favorite scene in the show is the last conversation between Alfred and Uhtred. It's really that great.

Just finished The Last Kingdom and I must say it is one of the best show; ever! It can rarely be stated that not only does an audience become attached to the protagonist, but a few supporting characters as well. This show has some of the best character arcs for both the protagonist and almost every supporting character; I was invested in almost every character Utred had a relationship with; even Heaston! Mr. Dreymon truly embodied the character Utred, and imo made history as one of the most incredible actors of our generation. Every actor who participated in this show made history! I cannot believe they were not nominated for an Emmy for best actor and series as well as supporting actors!

Rise of empires: Ottoman is actually incredibly underrated. Some people may be put off by the fact that the actual narration is interrupted by interviews with historians, but if you're looking for historical context and many interesting facts about the people depicted, the period and above all Ottoman and Byzantine military/defensive tactics there is no better show. Also, although it is historically accurate and you know how it's gonna end, the authors managed to sneak in some plot twists, and there is quite a lot of political manoeuvring and backstabbing as well if you like that sort of thing.

Game of Thrones is a Fantasy. It's uses some historical elements that make it seem like it's based on real history, but of course there are many made up creatures that obviously don't exist in real history.

I put Last Kingdom as number one mainly because they are keeping the story strong four seasons in where I think the first three seasons of Vikings were the strongest most interesting tv I’ve seen but it just fell of after the third season. As long as they don’t kill off Uhtred the show should stay interesting. Losing Ragnar on Vikings and moving away from Rollo just tanked the show for me

Some of these shows aren't during the Medieval period. The Medieval period is considered by most historians to start at the collapse of the Western Roman empire to the fall of Constantinople (the former Eastern Roman empire). It's roughly from the 470AD - 1453 AD. Shows like the Tudors and the Spanish Princess are actually renaissance shows. Just cause you wear plate armour and have swords doesn't make you medieval. It's called the Dark Ages because historians used to believe that the collapse of the Roman Empire lead to a decline in knowledge and civilization in Europe. And that civilization was only restored at the renaissance (rebirth) when the knowledge horded by Constantinople was shared in Europe, mainly because the Byzantium Empire collapsed.

You're mostly right. However the end of the Middle Ages is marked at several points, including 1453 (as you mentioned, but also 1492 (with the discovery of the Americas and the fall of Grenada, the last Muslim kingdom in Iberia), in England it's usually marked with the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 where Henry VII won and ended the War of the Roses. For a more round number with less significance 1500 can be used. The Renaissance, meanwhile, is more related to art and culture and isn't part of the same naming scheme as the Middle Ages, so it actually started in the Middle Ages. Constantinople didn't need to fall and pre-dated the start of the Renaissance in Italy. The Fourth Crusade along with the Venetians had even looted Constantinople in 1204, and lots of that wealth already made its way back to Venice, so while 1453 was important also for the Renaissance, it wasn't the start of it. There was a long history of trade and exchange of ideas predating 1453. Either way you're right in that The Spanish Princess and The Tudors are not Medieval, by these standards they are Early Modern, which describes the period from the end of the Middle Ages until the French Revolution. After that is the Modern Period. These are very general and arbitrary terms (they all are) and could be divided or explained in many different ways based on the history of individual countries, regions or the world.

YEZZZZZZZ TLK is Rated #1!!!!! Not surprised about that, just extremely Thrilled. I agree with the narrator, S1 starts of a lil slow but boy o boy does it make up for it with the preceding seasons. As a matter of fact, when S2 came was released which was on a Friday, I was up for 27 hours. I went straight home from work and binged watch S2. Absolutely worth it. I am SUPER stoked that S5 is in production. It is going to be intense! TLK’s cast are THE BEST! Natural Chemistry amongst them all. I still miss some of the cast members and their characters which have died off. I tried to watch the other show (rated #2) but after watching TLK, no other show can wear their shoes. Sorry, just my personal opinion. And as my final note, all I want to say is..... “Destiny is All” ⚔️🛡⚔️

I’m glad that you are reminding people how great Pillars of the Earth was, however it was never a show it was a mini-series and it works perfectly well as such. As for a sequel, there was a sequel novel “World Without End” which was also made into a TV movie by Starz but they deviated from the plot and is not much of a sequel.

@@HistorySpark I checked out Spartacus, Season 1 was insane, it really showed its age and lack of budget, but the scenes and the acting were very engaging. I was hyped and went straight into season 2 because I was hopping the success from Season 1 would make the CGI 10x better (and I wasn't wrong, the CGI really upgraded), but I couldn't get past episode 1, Andy Whitfield was a phenomenal Spartacus, no emotion, no sympathy, just pure savage and ruthless. I didn't know about his death at the time I started Season 2, it just didn't feel the same Liam McIntyre although still fitting for the role, is way more compassionate, in Season 1 he swore to never love another woman, he never showed any affection to other women, while in season 2 he was all smiles and flirty during episode 1, I didn't really like it at all. Spartacus Season 1 was probably one of the best lead actor performances I've seen from anyone, also the plot and support acting was absolutely sick and always active with no fillers, every minute of season 1 was filled with pure adrenaline, unlike the little I saw from season 2 episode 1. I need a 2nd opinion, I am not sure if I want to follow up with the rest of season 2 out of PTSD from Marco Polo, should I watch the rest or was Season 1 the peak of the series?

@@OnFight1997 Hey, I am glad you checked out Spartacus and enjoyed the first season of it. I agree Andy Whitfield was a better Spartacus than Liam McIntyre but stick with it the you eventually get use to it might take about 2 or 3 episodes tho. It really does get soo good and I would argue the plot and suspense is even better in seasons 2 or 3, definitely don't give up. Also I would recommend you watch Spartacus: Gods of the Arena before starting season 2, as that was a little mini spinoff which introduced some new characters who are important to season 2 and a lot of back story to fill in some gaps. It was really good, so definitely watch Gods of the Arena first and then restart season 2, you wont regret it :) Secondly about Marco Polo, the 2nd season is significantly better than the first but it unfortunately ends on a cliffhanger and we will never get a season 3 of Marco Polo to wrap up the story. I hope that helps !

Don't think twice before watching The Last kingdom.. There is no other show that can match its level... Not even Game of Thrones. One of the most deserving shows and an exceptional cast. Trust me.. This will become your most favorite shows.. You'll not have a single dull moment while watching it. PS: Medici is also worth watching.. Though I liked season 2&3 more than season 1.

Love Vikings but it is not historically accurate. Although the central characters existed, they did not all live at the same time. Example, the great Rollo, father of the Norman's, was not Ragnars brother. But it's still a great show.

Amazing list...As a history geek i love these shows, agree on the top two slots but i would add another one here Brittania. Its about the roman invasion of britain with supernatural elements. I enjoyed it hope everyone else does too :-) Vikings is a special show since it is epic and filled that show-hole after Got. Watching TLK now. Thanks for the recommendations !

I often wonder why Hereward the Wake has never been made more of as a historical figure. There was a series many years ago starring Alfred Lynch. The Charles Kingsley book is a good read.

No way personally I have really enjoyed and empathized with Ivar character, for its strengths and weaknesses. Bjorn too was great. And the secondary characters too like Harald were very well done

@@HistorySpark I totally agree. After Fimmel left, the show went downhill. I found it really hard watching the final two seasons. I didn’t like the writing nor the one note acting. The only actor with any dimension after Fimmel left was Jordan Patrick Smith (Ubbe), but there were few scenes for him to shine. I had really great expectations for Ivar, as the actor was so very good when acting with Fimmel on set, but again I found him one note afterwards. Björn has no dimension at all. I like Alex Ludwig, but was bored by his Björn in the end. I think Fimmel, in his self deprecating way and relaxed manner kept the whole show alive. He was apparently always working and thinking about the character and talking to Hirst about various scenes over a glass of wine or beer the night before. I think he eliminated a lot of the Hirst’s tendency to add unnecessary dialogue when action worked better. That’s why Fimmel was absolutely genius portraying Ragnar and brought him to life with little tics and eye movements. So believable. I also loved Blagden’s Athelstan, a very fine actor indeed, and of course Gustaf Skarsgård as Floki. He was truly inspired. These were the trio that really made the series brilliant for me. But even Skarsgård couldn’t bring Vikings to life after Ragnar left and he ended up in that dark and dreary Icelandic plot. So yes first four seasons, though honestly I think the writer could have done a better job with Ragnar’s missing years from the Myths and Sagas. I wasn’t happy with the senseless story with the Chinese Emperor’s daughter, addiction etc. It really didn’t go anywhere and didn’t fit into Ragnar’s character or the plot. I do love TLK very much and I’m so sad Netflix has made this next season its last. They don’t seem to know when they have a good thing. I already cancelled Netflix. It’s too expensive now I’ve seen everything I’m interested in. Quality is better than quantity, Netflix! I mostly watch foreign (Scandinavian, French, German, British and Australian) tv and when Season 5 of TLK appears ill renew my subscription for just that series. I heard they are making a season 5 of Call My Agent which I have watched since the beginning and loved. If that happens I’ll definitely resubscribe for that too.

In my opinion almost every character in the show is better than Ragnar. I am probably biased because I always wish they would choose real historical figures instead of legendary accounts about whom we know almost nothing. But, I also got tired of his sullen mischievous too cool for school grins, his acting like he always knows best but doesn't tell anybody else how most of the time, and his repeating of the same kind of emotional cycle over and over again. Just my two cents. edit to be clear: I still like him as a character, and love the show! Or at least, i loved it maybe until it created a completely nonexistent assault from the rus on Norway, which never even came close to happening. Still mildly curious how it ended in the second half of the last season, but not enough to watch it yet lol.

Because Cordoba, Zaragoza, Granada, andalucia were muslim kingdoms founded during the seventh or eight century, Charlemagne's father is especially famous for stoping this invasion in Tours, if he had fail, perhaps Europe would be muslim. Charlemagne also fought wars with them, the most famous one was the one in which Roldan, was in the rearguard during the retreat and was ambushed by gascons and muslims. Well, the Cid was vital in the wars to reconquest al those kingdoms again, he fought for the kingdoms of Castilla and Leon. First for king Sancho, and later for king Alfonso. There is even a campaigb of him in age of empires II, the conquerors expansion. In case you have played that game. Game of thrones is not on this list because this list focuses on historical shows that take place specifically during the medieval time period from approximately 500AD to 1500AD, so GOT although a great show is not the type of shows my channel focuses on, at least not currently

Season 3 imo is the best season of any series I've ever watched. Fantastic story, pacing, and the final conversation with Alfred and Uhtred was one of the most well acted scenes I've ever seen. Watching Edward overrule his father to take charge an help Uhtred outside Beamfleot was a near tearjerk moment, appreciating his development as a future King of Wessex

9:49 I've been trying to convince myself for years now to watch The Last Kingdom yet every time I see the lead actor, who only gives me model/cosplay vibes, I say to myself _maybe later_ Can you recommend an episode (no matter which one, I don't care about spoilers in the least) that will prove me wrong regarding him or just how much I'm missing on everyone else - an episode, regardless of season, that will illustrate the show at its best. TY! PS: I remember being skeptical of Black Sails in the very beginning and I ended up absolutely loving it by the end of it. Same w/ Vikings (at least while Ragnar was still around, couldn't get into the sons no matter how hard I tried - again b/c of the _lead_ actors)

I thought for sure you'd include Cadfael on your list. While it's not full of blood and gore like most of the shows on your list, it is one of the best Medieval shows I've seen. I guess because it was created in the 20th century and not the 21st century like all the shows on your list it wasn't included, but I thought this was an "all time" list. Also, a few of the shows on your list were not of the Medieval period but the Renaissance.
