Yeah not a fan of Box Hill either. It's a bit grimy, no view, toilets are filthy (although that's not surprising given the rest of the network) and, whilst there are bus and tram connections, they're a bit of walk from the station itself and the tram only goes back the way you've just come from, if you're coming from the city. Box Hill Central also isn't the nicest shopping centre either.

Personally I like the stations from Hawksburn, Toorak , Armadale, and Malvern. All built at the same time with the same red brick architecture, and wrought iron shelters. They are over 100 years old and still in excellent condition. The trenches are more attractive too, mostly earth and covered in trees and plants. The new trenches at Glen Huntly and Ormond are not very attractive imo, with the high concrete walls, and box section steel braces.

For old school style stations, I like Sandringham, Ripponlea and Williamstown. Fun fact: Williamstown and Glen Iris each have 3 stations in the same suburb :) Heyington station is also in a lovely location by the river and the stairs going down make you feel like you're on a walk, not going to the station.

Macleod near Latrobe is also quite a peaceful station. I wouldn’t call it underused but it’s also very green like Tacoma and doesn’t look like it’s changed much for years. I quite like quaint appeal it has. It’s also only one stop up from Rosanna. However, it’s probably got one of the most dangerous crossings on the network still intact. I believe it’s a fairly blind corner with no alarms or gates to stop people crossing. It probably should be addressed soon. Same goes for needing to cross the lines to change platforms even if those are gated.

Preston. Level crossing removal turned it from a boxy concrete job into a giant liquorice allsort. As well as having a decent amount of cover upstairs, there’s a sheltered waiting room inside & the skyrails provide shelter for anyone just waiting to cross the road. It’s one of the rare manned suburban stations, which is handy if you actually like talking to people. My only gripe is that the entrances are on the side and that there isn’t a third exit directly towards the market.

The same can be said about many level crossing removals. The program has a specific intention of removing the crossing, and although sometimes they do even more than that, they're not always as diligent as they should be about fixing traffic. It's a shame, but obviously their budget is finite and they have an awful lot on their plate already, I reckon.

Coburg’s single platform is indicative of the decades of neglect and that the Upfield line was slated for closure so didn’t attract any improvements and all those wooden gates were kept operating because of under-investment. Many wooden gates were abolished in the ‘60s and ‘70s except for the Upfield line which was going to close (now saved). Perversely, I’m glad many wooden gates survived as preserved artifacts. I was particularly irritated at the cost cutting thinking that stopped all Upfield trains after 7pm for decades. I was able to use the Sydney Rd tram which is why they did it, there was talk of re-routing the Sydney Rd trams along the rail corridor like the Port Melbourne line. I’m not sure why the closure didn’t go ahead as a succession of governments rode roughshod over public opinion and did what they wanted anyway.
