i am still new to this. on day 1 a player direct messaged me then took me out bounty hunting. after about an hour i had a good grasp on several basics, and a good start on credits. Since then ive been on my own and have enjoyed learning the game. I also went through most of the tutorials beforehand, which made things like docking when i was playing live a whole lot easier...and not as embarrassing

I wish that would happen to me! I did run off from the starting systems straight up though, so maybe that was my mistake lol I'm day 2 into the game. If you played the original in the 80's it all makes a lot of sense from the start. I think this game has a bit of that oldskool no handholding 'your on your own you work it out' sort of vibe. 21:19 Buyback always is 5% of your ships value, you can also look it up on the interface to your right, in the home menu in the bottom left 28:55 You can also activate night vision in the interface to your right, in the "ship"-tab I think 34:10 You can also plan your route for any amount of cargo, independent of how much cargo you actually carry, in the route plotting screen on the galactic map ( as for example seen at 8:00) adjust the slider at the bottom to select your desired cargo mass

point of contention: Selecting OBAFGKM stars will NOT guarantee you a stop at a star you can scoop every time. I've had this happen to me in my SAR Diamondback, I had to manually plot a route to a scoopable star because I was running out of fuel while en-route to a rescue Op. The game had me jumping across a rift filled with brown dwarves and didn't accurately calculate my fuel reserves thinking I had enough fuel to make the last 3 jumps to the target while I was running on fumes. Plan ahead, yes, but always keep an eye out on your fuel reserves and consumption. Incidentally, O class stars are also scoopable. "Oh, Be, A Fine Girl/Guy, Kiss Me!" a simple mnemonic we use in astronomy can also be used in Elite Dangerous if you need a quick reminder which stars are scoopable. Another point is your power management. If you're overdrawing on the power plant but want to keep your hardpoints active then why on Earth would you turn off one of them to power the other when there's other systems you could re-prioritize. Your 0C K-Warrant scanner comes to mind, you don't need that when you're actually fighting, and your FSD is also something you can switch to priority 4, you can't jump with hardpoints deployed anyway so you might as well turn that thing off. Together these modules take 11% power consumption on your power plant which is the exact same power required to run your rail gun. I get the intention why you want to teach new players power management, but just telling them to turn off modules willy nilly won't help. You need to teach them how the power management menu works and the rhyme and reason why you have your setup the way you do. In a combat scenario, if I need both my weapons on a Sidewinder with your loadout operational I'd do the following: Go to power management menu on the right calculate how much power I require for my weapons (17%) see what modules I won't use or won't be able to use with my hardpoints deployed (K-Warrant scanner, FSD, Cargo Hatch) and calculate what they consume (Look at that, what a coinkidink, it's 17%) Deactivate these modules or set them to priority 4, this will make sure you have all the necessary systems operational as soon as you deploy your hardpoints. If you need to run or scan a target for a K-Warrant just retract hardpoints and wait for the module to boot up again. Now, if you use this trick and still run short on power you've put too many power hungry modules on your ship your power plant is unable to power and you need to return to spacedock/outfitting and make some changes to your ship.

When landing on a planet, there's a scale made up with horizontal bars to the right of your altimeter. This indicates your vertical velocity. This is very helpful when compensating for the gravity of a planet. This also appears when driving around in your Scarab and helps you time use of your thrusters when falling from great heights. Also, when planning routes, there are sliders you can use to configure jump distances according to cargo and fuel weight. By default, these are set to your ship's current status.

I started the hard way and really endup throwing the controller couple of times, but in 48h Im loving the game on an exploration tuned Kobra 3 - The reason I did not endup uninstalling was that I found out something called - Docking Computer - most important starter tip for a begginer - would not keep playing without it, and when you begin u just need a 10K simple safe courier mission and a station with outfit to Docking Computer, there you go - 4,5K and the whole game improves 500% - Also important is the Geographics Data Sales button, I discovered it by accident and suddently I had 300K to sell from previous 4h gameplay, instead of keep looking for lousy 17K/20K data couriers - great job on this video, I will learn the blueprints for long range exploration

Aye, Universal Cartographic data makes nice money. Just saying, you should try docking without the docking computer. Just don't boost into the station. Going through the mailslot in a Cobra might feel bad but just wait until you purchase a Conda and exit the station for the first time with it.

Very helpful, and watchable video! There are so many ED instructions videos (as there should be, so much to learn) but many can quickly go over or under the heads of a new player (IE me). While I had questions about some of what you said, they were only here and there and the video in general was a constant flow of information, both understandable and useful, that I did not have before (even with training missions, which I’m glad you pointed out!). Thank you! -I haven’t checked your other videos yet but some things I know I would like to watch more on would be.. the Community, especially for players new to a MMO Community type game. I’ve heard “mobius” mentioned a lot, you mentioned (and explained their function well) the fuel rats and how to contact them. It would be great to learn more about where to start as a new player as far as 1) an overview of potential “roles” (like fuel rat) you could become and what that looks like (they have there own site, you can contact them there about ships and steps to get involved) etc. I hear about explorers, bounty hunters, politics, traders, but is it all solo or are their communities/“teams” for these roles like the fuel rats. 2) You mention positive/negative G’s, but I think you also say they aren’t applicable in the game. Could you elaborate? Clearly the gravity of a mass object matters with mass lock and handling like you mentioned, but does the objects gravity allow the possibility to travel near it for a “slingshot” effect? What are the differences between approaching a planet from the direction of its star or opposite? Does it matter? I could go on but the comment thread might crucify me for sounding like I’m looking for a hand to hold. Great video!
@FalconViewImagery
@FalconViewImagery 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tennyson for not only taking the time to comment but also enjoying the video. I made most of these videos while I was deployed in the Middle East last last year and sadly haven't gotten around to making more now that I am back home. On your questions: 1. I did join the Fuel Rats but have yet to conduct a test run or get called out on a mission. They have a great process in place and plenty of folks to be able to help the new guys. 2. Positive and Negative G Forces are not replicated in game in reference on how you pilot your ships. I was kind of making a lighthearted comment due to the fact that I was a fighter pilot and some of the maneuvers made in ED would pop your eyeballs at a minimum. There are no slingshot effects, however you can use the gravity well to whip your self around a body when entering to dock for example. I find it very useful to avoid lock-on by pirates. Approaching from its star just provides additional light. You do want to approach an orbiting station at its opening which is always facing the body it is orbiting. Cheers, Col D

Lol, I supercruised for what must've been two hours, tried missions, but got bored and forgot about them, managed to buy an interdicter... Literally the first ship I opened fire on with my sidey was an Anaconda that I pulled out of supercruise. It didn't end well. Hmm, maybe if I upgraded it? Actually finished a few missions (Data delivery was virtually all the Sidewinder does), upgraded it a bit, and noticed a negligeable difference. "Well, this ship is just garbage". After buying an Eagle though, something clicked and the bug bit me. Wound up hunting in an Eagle and hauling with the Hauler for my initial first weeks before realizing I was a moron and that the Cobra was full of win. Then I bought a Viper MKIV and hated it. Learned much later that more expensive/newer/upgraded ship variants are generally crappy compromises in this game. Saved up for an ASP E and fully kitted Vulture the hard way. Farmed High-RES until I bought a T7 and that's when I started using the shit out of third party tools. The game really started about 40hrs in for me. ...I would not recommend going through that route to anyone except for those completely unfamiliar with space sims who wish to become even more unfamiliar. Getting a Cobra and getting comfortable in it should be the first priority for any new player in Elite; it's the first true good multi-role ship that can pay for itself many times over quickly and easily... It'll progress you faster in a wider range of missions and give you a good head start for some of the tougher activities. Alternately; ditch the Sidey immediately for an Adder. I wish I did. Also, read up on the game. Do it, and do it constantly for as long as you're still playing.
@shayminthedoctor9663
@shayminthedoctor9663 7 жыл бұрын
Something I learned very, very quickly. If you're in a Sidewinder, you're going to lose. Period. You could be going up against a Hauler and still lose. The Eagle is about the best damn hunting ship available early on. It's maneuverability will get you out of a bind if you bite off more than you can chew and the rebuy cost for the ship itself is nonexistent. Still, the armor is made of cardboard (better than the Sidewinder's imagination armor, but not by that much) and the range is abysmal. I will stand by my faithful Eagle 'till the end of time as the best low-tier combat ship ever made in a video game, for she has served my commander well, but you really need to get something better ASAP. The best way to get money, I've found, is to use the SRV. Seriously, settlement data cashes can get up to absurd values and require minimal effort to acquire. I hit a planet once and from *one* settlement got the money needed to buy a Cobra. WTF?! And, when all else fails, explore. Fly safe, fly smart, and remember: KGB FOAM

I gave this a watch to see if there were any helpful tips I may have overlooked.. I am glad I did.. Most of what you said I am aware of, but the one thing I wasn't happened to be immensely helpful in the future.. I am tired of running into a series of stars that I can't scoop and almost running out of fuel because of it.. Your tip on filtering route by star types will make life a little easier.. I usually went by fastest route until low and swapped to economic until I could refuel.. As for the "always have at least 2 respawns worth of money" tip, I play it safer by trying to keep at least 3 respawns worth of my most expensive ship.. Sure, it can be a large sum of credits burning a hole in my pocket, but at least I can rest easy knowing I have the funds to enable me to bounce back after a burst of bad luck.. My tip for new players is: Always have a plan BEFORE leaving the dock! Plan out what you are going to do, where you are doing it, and how you are doing it.. Also remember to reload, refuel, and repair at every dock!
@Ferrinflame
@Ferrinflame 5 жыл бұрын
Nooo! New users do NOT fill up your ship first before planning a route! If you do you might run into the issue where you take on too much cargo and your ship is unable to make any of the alternate jump routes as well, leaving you stuck with a hold full of cargo and nowhere to go. I had this happen when I had just started playing and it was super frustrating. While planning your route from the map select your final destination and click the Route button (the Z of dots connected by a line), then go over to the panel on the left side of the screen and click the Route tab (second from left of the tabs). At the very bottom is a slider, adjust it to the TOTAL amount of cargo in your ship's hold (not just the cargo for the mission, if you already have anything in there) and see if it reroutes you in which case you're good to go or if it flags your destination as "no route available." If the latter is the case it means you need to adjust the slider down until you have a plotted route and only take that much cargo per trip.

This was very helpful. A few things that should be mentioned. I am very new, just started playing a few days ago. 1. Yes, do training... but also take the time to set your controls to suit what works best for you. I literally spent 4+ hours in training. 2. Stations are mostly behind other planets when coming from a sun. Cant count how many times (ALL) I am warping to a station, but then a planet is right in front of it, you get "SLOW DOWN" Trial and error on approaches. 3. Starting out. All I can say is.. GOOD LUCK!!!! I could not do any missions. Cant mine, no mining glaser ect... Want to do a data recovery? You are unable to plot a course to the loaction. So in most cases, doing missions for mission board (or whatever) dont. Not yet. 4. Bounties. Seems to be the only way you will make cash right off the bat. Be smart. i got so damn lucky. Saw two ships firing on each other. Attacked the one that was wanted. They took me down to 2%, while I barley did a damn thing to them, but won! 35k credits yay! So,be careful and dont just go right in. May want to wait till they are lower. Only go in more than 2 Fed (or whataver) ships attacking the enemy ship. But not one Fed ship and you. They will jump to you and hurt you. 5. FInding stuff to buy is a huge pain in the ass. I spent hours going to different staions trying to find a damn mining laser.

Thank you for this vid. I just got the game the other day. One of the main things that drives me nuts and as a fellow pilot you may be able to relate is that the roll doesn't include any bank and I'm just having a hard time with my turn coordination. If there's an object to my left and have to reprogram my mind to not just turn but I have to roll and then pitch to it. Which is not the easiest things to remember when you chasing something or being chased unless there's some trick I'm missing.

Not to mention getting used to controls. I know i will stick to it, it is not the first game with high learning curve i play. Good stuff. Filtering stars in the map was particularly useful, as I've started doing long delivery missions (400+ ly), and need to scoop! Scooping tips were great too. I've been doing it without the help of the orbit lines, but it is easier with the lines, as it gives you another visual clue. One thing I'm still getting wrong is watching youtube videos while jumping, and then ending up crashing into stars ...

Hey @The Game Colonel -- great video! At 24:00, how are you showing your Heat and Fuel in the center-top of the HUD? I know heat is normally shown next to the radar, and the fuel is normally in the lower-right of your HUD, I just don't know how to display those guys in the center-top of the HUD the way you did here. I've never owned a scoop, so I'm not sure if that's related or not, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks!

The Power management part is a little clunky. To put it simply, you should make all critical systems 1st priority, combat systems 2nd priority and everything that you don't need when your guns are out as a lower priority. That way, if anything shuts off when you pull out your hardpoints, it will be the cargo hatch, fuel scoop, docking computer, etc and not any shields, weapons, thrusters or anything else important. Also, it's important to note that those systems will automatically come back online after the guns are put away.

Couple of things I would like to add: the "4" menu will show you your rebuy cost. And when adjusting power priorities (particularly on combat ships) it's smart to only have your bare minium survival modules on priority 1. If your power plant gets shot out and you happen to not blow up you lose 50% of your power. If you railguns and such are on priority 1 you'll likely be dead in the water. Thrusters and FSD are all you REALLY need then, maybe life support, sensors, defensive equipment, these things. Doing those adjustments after your power plant is out is too late. Keep it

heat management when scooping. First as soon as you jump to a new system, and enter witch space, zero your throttle. You will never faceplant a star, you and wont need a heat sync. And get the best scoop for the size of your ships tanks, if you have a big ship, get a 6a if you have a medium ship 4-5 a a small ship get a 2a... the class of the scoop will gage amount of time it will take to fill your tanks, again if you have the right scoop you wont be there long enough to over heat. And you wont need a sync.

@Ryutsashi
@Ryutsashi 7 жыл бұрын
Fuel scooping in single player is easier because you need to worry about interdictions less. If you've got an A grade power generator (at least on the ships I've flown), you can get relatively close the star, throttle all the way down, and simply leave for a few minutes. At certain distances your temperature is stable and you'll literally never overheat. It takes a bit of fiddling around to find the right altitude, but it works with no problems whatsoever

One thing missing here is Integrity. It will not be repaired when you choose to repair (just like the paint). You can find it under Advanced Maintenance. It is different from your Hull, and having 0% on Integrity will make your Hull about 30% more fragile. On large ships, such as an Anaconda, repairing Integrity even if it is "just" 80% can cost a couple of hundred thousand credits.

Unless something has changed, the proper way to scoop is just find the spot where your scoop turns on and cut engines to 0% power and wait. Then you don't have to constantly adjust your heading. Makes it very easy. That said, this is how I did it a long time ago and that might not work now.

I've gotten close to running out of fuel twice. One of them was in deep space not realizing that my filters we're not set correctly. I jumped into a star and realized it was my final jump and realize it was not a scoopable star. My fuel was extremely low. I checked my system map and realized there was a total of three stars in the system and the farthest star away was a scoopable star. I barely made it LOL. It was fun. I was shiting bricks the whole time. I also installed a automatic field maintenance unit in my ship and never said the power priorities. I was above a 3-g planet in a anaconda. I had taken some damage because I was rammed by accident by a friend of mine. I decided I would go ahead and do some repairs. To deploy a repair Limpet you have to pop your hard points. With the new field maintenance unit being installed it basically shut everything down. I begin to slowly fall towards the planet. By the time everything got booted back up again I barely recovered but I still hit the surface of the planet pretty hard. If I remember correctly the structure of my ship had about 32% left. LOL. Once I got into PVP I learn to maximize my power priorities. It's definitely a learning curve.

A better way to fuel scoop. When you get the 5 second countdown before a jump, lower you speed down to 25%, as long as the countdown has started you can alter the speed and that is the speed you will be set for when you leave the jump. When you leave the jump you will now only hit a top speed of 25%, which gives you more than enough time to position your ship. Move like you did either up or down, either way doesn't matter just keep your crafts nose above the line around the sun. Watch your temperature, when that hits around 60% stop your engines, you do not have to move to fuel scoop and at a around the 60% your temperature will not arise. At about 63% the temperature will rise, but it will rise slowly, so slow that by the time the temperature is hitting a high temperature, you will have filled up. Now so long as you are pointing above that suns line, you can just max speed out of there and you will be fine and will have refuelled without any worries. Just watch out for pirates wanting to interdict you, the thing for that is to watch the message readout top left, as they will tell you they are coming after you. If you do get a message then get as far away from the star as possible, as quickly as possible, you can always come back to the star to refuel if needed.

Why in the Milky Way would you disable your Beam Laser in order to conserve power? All weapons should be priority 1. What you should do instead is drop stuff like your FSD and Cargo Hatch to priority 5, as well as anything else you won't directly need when dogfighting. I've even seen people use an A rated Life Support and then have that shut off so they get 25 minutes of air for combat.

So I just played and learned. A couple of weeks ago I actually went back and did the combat training mission again and wondered why I couldn't do it the first time around! I still suck at combat and probably always will as I don't have the nerve for it, but I can at least take out even small wings of high ranked NPC's now - of course having an engineered Python with $150M sunk into it helps...

If you do mining at all, invest in some point defense. Pirates will try to break your cargo hatch with limpets to steal your stuff and point defense will shoot hatch breaker limpets down, in addition to mines and missiles. Other players will use nothing BUT missiles after they take out your shields, so point defense comes as a nasty surprise. Also, when a pirate threatens you, wait for your scan of him to complete, so your screen says "WANTED." If you shoot him before the scan completes, you'll get an assault bounty (and an ass kicking from the system security forces).
