It makes zero sense to put another stadium in St. Pete,they seriously need to figure out their smartest move is moving the team to Orlando,the proposed stadium is going essentially walking distance from one of the biggest convention centers in the US,just how many more people will that bring in,all those conventions end at 4-6pm and then all those thousands of attendees have nothing to do,the theme parks dont close that late,Animal Kingdom and the Universal parks have closing times between 6-8pm,staying right there to watch a game is pretty appealing.Then the central location in the state will bring people from the east and west coast and metro Orlando population is growing at a staggering rate,seems so silly to commit the Rays to playing way out there past Tampa,just crossing the Skyway bridge is scary AF!!
@classjacksonlawsuit
@classjacksonlawsuit 9 ай бұрын
It would still be a hard uphill battle, especially if they rebrand. The thing you fail to mention and/or realize is that those convention goers aren't as lucrative as you would think and neither are the local fans on either coast. Mostly because the vast majority of them aren't from Florida originally and those that are often have allegiances baked in from their parents or other familial ties. Best of luck, but that market isn't as sustainable as building a new stadium in Tampa proper would be.
@Art_V101

@@classjacksonlawsuit Spring training games when the Braves were at Disney and generally in Florida are usually super popular and would always sell out.Orlando gets 74 million visitors a year and has a population just short of the Tampa metro,the Orlando Magic have no issues with attendance and get a lot of tourists at the games.Baseball has generally failed in Florida,The Rays constantly have good teams and nobody goes to the games,not moving them to Orlando would be a huge mistake.Maybe if baseball wasn't a summer sport all those snowbirds in the west coast of Florida would give it a chance but another stadium in St Pete,that's lunacy!!They wouldn't rebrand,they would just be the Orlando Rays!

The A's gave up their San Jose territorial rights to the Giants when the Giants were working San Fran politicians to replace Candlestick but the Giants never gave the rights back. Then when the A's tried to build a stadium in San Jose years ago, the Giants vetoed it and Bud Selig backed the Giants. That's part of the reason we are where we're at with the A's situation.

When you look at Raleigh, you have to take Durham and Chapel Hill into account, which moves the metro population over 2 million. For Charlotte and Raleigh, you have to take into account the other large metro areas in the Carolinas like Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Greenville, Spartanburg, Fayetteville, and Columbia. The expanded market is up around 10 million, and that is a lot of potential fans. A team that isn't run like the Panthers should do well in that area.

I played Baseball Mogul years ago and expanded to 40 teams (which meant also meant 40 additional minor league teams I had to place). I did Vancouver, Portland, Salt Lake City, and San Antonio in the west. I did Cheyenne, WY, which was dumb, but they drew better than you'd think. After a few years I moved them to Omaha, and moved Portland to Las Vegas. San Antonio and Vancouver drew the best. A's had moved to San Jose. Rays DID move to Orlando and drew better in "Universal Field" (Universal Studios). In the east, I had Nashville, Charlotte, New Orleans, Buffalo, and Richmond. Richmond eventually moved to Columbus.

Don't forget Columbus Clippers are AAA affiliate of Cleveland Guardians (formerly Indians which I'm old school) and here in Columbus, it's split between Reds and Guardians roughly, plus arguably Pirates and Cards. Indianapolis Indians are AAA affiliate of the Pirates. Nonetheless, agree on geographic reasons among other factors to not have one. Haven't even mentioned Detroit Tigers. Besides, there's been so much history that both Columbus & Indy each have in terms of AAA baseball. Think originally Columbus was the founding headquarters of AAA baseball with IL (International Leage).

Hypothetically speaking, I wonder what would happen if Vegas goes ahead and says no to the A's and all of a sudden throw their name in a hat for expansion. Would Vegas still be a legit contender when weighed against the competitive possibilities as outlined in this video? I'd say their chances go from definitely to probably. I'm real afraid that if Vegas says no to the A's, they would likely to lose out on MLB altogether just like they did with MLS. And to add insult to that injury, they would still have all those MLB dot tv blackouts that could have been resolved. On the other hand, are TV markets still relevant in the age of cordcutting? I'm surprised no one has factored that in yet.

I don’t think it’s a matter of Vegas saying no to the A’s; it’s more of a matter of Fisher not being able to afford it, or Bally’s taking their own sweet time redeveloping the Tropicana site, or both. That, and maybe all parties realizing that a stadium just may not work on that site. I don’t think it would take much for MLB to approve the A’s moving to SLC, and letting Vegas get ready in their own time for an expansion team. Vegas wants MLB, just maybe not the A’s.

The Boston Red Stockings (Now Braves) were nicknamed the Nationals because they played in the National league while the Boston Americans (Now Red Sox) were called the Americans because they played in the American league interestingly the franchise now known as the Braves sold both the Red stockings name to the now Boston Red Sox and the Nationals name to the now Washington Nationals ... The MLB needs to add some sort of salary floor and/or cap before they even think about expansion. Any new team will be at best mid-market by default and be at such a competitive disadvantage to the established big market teams. Nobody in Raleigh is advocating a MLB franchise, and I live only an hour away. Sacramento, Portland, Indy and Hartford are anarchic slums. Orlando can't get an expansion team because there are already two teams in Florida. SLC is the most viable candidate for a team, but it could obtain one by relocation rather than expansion. Pittsburgh and Cleveland are dying franchises ripe for relo or even merger. The Rays could end up in Orlando if the insane deal with St. Pete collapses. There will be no expansion. DG, Montreal was abandoned! And the strike years of 1994 which cancelled the post season (and may I add that the Expos were actually really good that season), And 1995. Then their owner screwed them over BIG TIME, then MLB owned the franchise and really didn’t promote that team and left them with NO BROADCASTING RIGHTS in TV or Radio. If any place deserves a redo it’s Montreal. MLB really screwed that place over!

I never said they should play at that MONSTROSITY! But that situation in Montreal was that owner (Jeff Loria now owner of the Marlins) Screwed the city and Provence of Quebec. His thought probably was to move out of Montreal regardless! Being he was never serious about staying in Montreal and tried to ransom that Market for taxpayer paid new stadium when that market was still paying off on that MONSTROSITY the Expos were stuck playing in. Montreal is a good case in point that the Summer Olympics isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be! Especially financially!!

as someone who is just getting into MLB and lives in Orlando and has been in various parts of Florida the vast majority of my life. Move the rays. tampa is a horrible location for anything. no one likes tampa even people from tampa, no one wants to go to tampa especially for 1 thing. if they move to Orlando its a better location with more interesting stuff around and big for tourism. locals and tourists will go to games and find other things to do in the area or go to games just because they are already in the area doing on vacation or something

Youd have to make N, S, E & W divisions with 4 teams in each. Salt Lake City & Charlotte or Nashville or New Orleans would be the best cities for new stadiums. Montreal & Oakland or Portland are dark horse cities.

🎉The upcoming Netflix documentary on what happened to the Montreal Expos will hopefully shed some much needed light on the fact that it wasn't in any way the fault of the true fanbase. In fact, in the early '80's the Expos were outdrawing both the Yankees and Dodgers!!!!!! In a perfect world a new ballpark in the Peel Basin area close to downtown and directly accessing the new REM light rail line would be the best option and preferably with a retractable fixed roof. The main issue in Montreal is that it would need to be privately financed especially in light of the continuing Olympic Stadium fiasco.... All in all, with this in place, along with all the new revenue streams in place which simply didn't exist 20 years ago solid and stable ownership and a competitive on field product, there is simply no reason major league baseball couldn't thrive in Montreal again.

It'll be a bad idea to move the Rays to Orlando. The TV market in Orlando is 17, whereas Tampa Bay is 13. Also, the Orlando Magic almost moved to Kansas City in 2011, but in the last minute, the decision was made to build a new arena in Orlando. Compared to other NBA teams, the team don't have much support. At least half the people in Orlando are visitors going in and out of Orlando. If it's not for Disney World, Orlando would not exist. What makes you think Orlando can support a MLB team? Therefore, it makes plenty of since for the Rays to stay in Tampa Bay in either St. Pete or Tampa.

I think it's an easy decision if they only add 2 teams: Nashville and either Vegas or Oakland, whichever team doesn't get the A's. I could see a deal worked out with Oakland similar to the NFL and the Cleveland Browns back in the 90s. I think you can rule out any city in Florida because of the attendance issues with the other two teams. I think you can rule out any city of Texas because the other two teams already have the fans. I would rule out Mexico City because of the altitude.

I agree Sacramento is not a current candidate but your reasoning is pretty flawed. You say, remember when they tried to build a baseball stadium… That was 35 years ago! Sacramento is an entirely different city. Rather, there is no ownership group and/or organization actually pursuing an expansion team. So, that’s probably a more likely reason why they wouldn’t get a team.
