And here is the last top ten for this month, a follow up to the Top 10 Most Effective MEDIEVAL Weapons which I know you guys liked, on this video we will go through the most effective weapons used by samurai and ashigaru in Feudal Japan.
The most iconic Japanese weapon is the katana; It is characterized by its particular appearance: a single-edged, curved blade with a circular or squared guard and long grip for grabbing with two hands.
The first use of "katana" (gatana) as a word to describe a long sword that was different from a tachi occurs in the Kamakura Period (1185-1333).
The katana became very popular amongst samurai due to the changing nature of close-combat warfare. The quicker draw of the sword was well suited to combat where victory depended heavily on short response times.
The katana was often paired with a smaller companion sword, such as a wakizashi, or it could also be worn with the tantō, a smaller, similarly shaped dagger. The pairing of a katana with a smaller sword is called the daishō.
The katana is generally defined as the standard sized, moderately curved (as opposed to the older "tachi" style featuring more curvature) Japanese sword with a blade length greater than 60 cm ( 23 1⁄2 inches).It is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade with a circular or squared guard (tsuba) and long grip to accommodate two hands.

Number 11:The Bananaskinaki. Lay a banana skin on the floor after eating the inside to give you extra energy. Ensure that the banana skin is laid in the traditional, time honoured manner with the outer layer facing upward in the path of thine enemy. Watch with fascination as he falls to the floor, but be ready to finish him off with your bowl of diced avocados in the traditional fashion. Nice video, by the way.

Miyamoto Musashi also preferred the Yari over the Naginata. Though I'm not sure whether the preference was inspired by 1vs1 fights, in contrast to battlefield fights. I can imagine that when battlefield fights get in close range, a Naginata might be preferable. It could be possible that the Yari was the preferred weapon because it could be made more cheaply and quickly, so Ashigaru armies could be raised quick.

I read years ago that during one battle a samurai was going across a destroyed bridge ( one of the log beams). He had a naginata, they shot arrow after arrow at him. He deflected every arrow with such skill that both sides had samurai stopping and watching in amazement. After the battle they counted the arrows that were in his armour, there were 89 arrows stuck in his armour.

The Naginata was fun to practice with especialy since we shared practice hours with the local Kendo club, and we had a few friendly (and a lil goofy) cross over sparing rounds. Though they where not overly fond ove the fact we Naginata users trained a somewhat fair deal at striking feets and legs.

There's a constant misconception about the Yumi or bow, in warfare, the Yumi differs greatly to the ceremony bow that we all are used to. The longer and more layered composite Yumi or called War Yumi, has a draw weight of ~150 lbs, similar to a good Longbow.

@Metatron Jumonji Yari and Kanabo/Tetsubo I'll mostly use the Jumonji Yari in combat because doing thrust, pulling and sweeping can be an attack with it.
@YukitoOnline
@YukitoOnline 4 жыл бұрын
@剣と刃物Swords And Cutlery It's too unwieldy for me, since the top is heavy and you need to hit with that specific part to effectively harm someone, also I'm limited with specific attack patterns with that weapon. The Kanabo/Tetsubo has enough reach, impact, and balance to stop anyone with any part of the weapon, and also attack patterns can vary with it.
@YukitoOnline

@剣と刃物Swords And Cutlery My main problem with the Masakari is that it's still unwieldy for me due to the weight of the axe head. My attack patterns are also limited due to the weight of the axe head and how it is designed. The time I'll be using it is during sieges where I can breakdown wooden walls and doors. The Kanabo/Tetsubo is a good enough two-handed all arounder.
@gabzdark07

@@YukitoOnline Get stronger. The masakari was not meant for mediocre warriors. The strength to wield it nimbly will be rewarded with unparalelled striking power, from which no armor will save you. That goes both for Nioh and real life honestly.
@YukitoOnline
@YukitoOnline 4 жыл бұрын
@@gabzdark07 Meh, I'd might've already killed 2 people already with the Jumonji Yari before I could swing the Masakari. Plus I already got some informal training in Sojutsu via my Japanese uncle. Once you learned how to wield a Yari, even the basics, you'll love it~ Thrusting, Sweeping and heck even "Pulling" is an attack with the Jumonji Yari. You'll also enjoy how to parry with the Yari.
@gabzdark07
@gabzdark07 4 жыл бұрын
@@YukitoOnline I bet the Sohei could say the same about their axes. I'd never deny the effectiveness of the Yari spear, nor any large spear for that matter, but I also recognize that the higher strength requirement is well worth it. The dismounted knights favored a similar weapon called the Pollaxe, which was also quite heavy and evolved from the two-handed Dane Axe. These weapons lack the reach of a spear but make up for it with unrivaled striking power. In your case though, you're right to stick with the Yari if you prefer it. After all you already know Sojutsu, and it's better to excel at one thing than be mediocre with many.

I love how all of these in some way or another (With the exception of Kanabo and Tanto) are represented in Nioh and Nioh 2. Wakizashi are typically the smaller off-hand sword in dual katana, while the Yari, Naginata, and Bisento are all styles one can get of the "spear" weapon type, and then there's axes/hammers, and then Nodachi/Odachi/Nagamaki in the Odachi weapon type. I also like how Nioh also incorporates battle stances with fitting attack speeds and animations for each stance. High Stance odachi attacks are very commonly vertical slashes for example.

Hey Metatron, great video as usual! I don't know if you covered it previously but what is up with some Tanto coming with a smaller thinner knife or chop sticks together in the scabbard? Was this for eating and was it commonly done historically? Was the Tanto used similarly in Japan as daggers were in Europe, carried by common people as a every day carry multi purpose tool for eating, and self defense?
